Mission Raceway Park Motorcross Tuesdays

For something a little different I was out May 21 at Mission Raceway watching a bit of Motocross. A couple friends have boys that just started down at Mission after getting bikes last year. I talked them into going down to the track and join the club. Both Parker and Taylor are doing excellent as you can see by these pictures. Both are in the novice class, but I think if they decide to run in competition they will kick some butt. Some of the other riders , which I will shoot later this year are unbelievable.

Here is a couple shots of Taylor and Parker. Taylor is #10 and Parker is #511.

The fourth Pro Stock bike event of the year at Englishtown gave the riders a huge chance to get into the record books , with mine shaft conditions. The 7.049 record was in serious jeopardy as Shawn Gann and Fred Collis both ran 7.05 in qualifying. With the weather on Sunday expected to be as good as Friday and Saturday, could we see a six?

Here is final qualifying at Englishtown.

1. Shawn Gann Gann Speed Airtech Suzuki 7.051 189.28
2. Fred Collis Area 51 M'Sports Suzuki 7.059 188.36
3. Geno Scali Trim-Tex Suzuki 7.077 191.10
4. Antron Brown Lucas Oil Suzuki 7.101 186.92
5. GT Tonglet Vance & Hines Harley 7.113 189.95
6. Angelle Savoie Team 23 Suzuki 7.127 187.55
7. Karen Stoffer Suzuki 7.128 190.00
8. Sean Conner Lartigue Racing Suzuki 7.131 186.92
9. Mike Berry MB Precision Suzuki 7.135 188.10
10. Reggie Showers PDI Prosthetic Design Suzuki 7.142 188.41
11. Craig Treble Matco Tools Suzuki 7.144 187.29
12. Steve Johnson K&N Performance Filters Suzuk 7.172 186.41
13. Michael Phillips Suzuki 7.173 184.27
14. Matthew Smith Suzuki 7.175 183.52
15. Blaine Hale Cornwell Tools Suzuki 7.194 188.78
16. Chris Reuter Reuter Racing Suzuki 7.207 190.73

First round Sunday saw a couple upsets, with Angelle bowing out in the first round for the second consecutive race, Fred Collis red lit, and GT Tonglet on the Harley broke giving Steve Johnson the win. The second round matchups look like this:

Gann vs Berry: Shawn Gann should get the easy win here as long as he does pull the trigger to quick. Right!

Hale Vs Showers: Showers ran a 7.12 in the first round and should also get the win. Right!

Scali Vs Treble: A tough pick. Treble finally got the bike to run a good number in round one, but Scali is one of the best on the starting line. I am picking Treble only because I have picked him at pretty well every race and he is due. Right!

Brown Vs Johnson: Antron has the third quickest pass in round one a should make it to the semis. Right!

In the semis, Gann will defeat Brown and Treble will make it to the final after defeating Showers. The final round will see Shawn Gann extent his lead in the standings with a win over a red lighting Craig Treble. I was pretty well right on the money except Treble did not red light in the final but he did have problems giving Gann the easy win. Gann was very fortunate though, after having an unusually bad rt of .126. With Savoie going out early and Treble and Gann going rounds the top five in the standings are really close Here are the top 10 in points standings after Englishtown:

1. Geno Scali 328 2. Shawn Gann 304 3. Angelle Savoie 302 4. Antron Brown 299 5. Craig Treble 255 6. Reggie Showers 212 7. Mike Berry 190 8. Andrew Hines 167 9. Fred Collis 156 10. Karen Stoffer 149

A fixture in North West Motorcycle drag racing retires!

The latest news from the NHRA Sportsman motorcycle ranks is that a prominent member of the Division 6 class is hanging up his leathers. Brian Hudson is calling it quits after a long and prestigious career. Hudson has won more Divisional titles than any other sportsman dragbike racer out there, to look at his mantle is like being in Wally World. Brian was instrumental in establishing the Sportsman Motorcycle series in NHRA Division six and helping it spread to the other divisions. His mechanical and racing knowledge has helped too many riders to list and he will be missed be many at the track.
There are several reasons for Brian leaving drag racing, some of which are based around the difference of rules between divisions and the involvement of electronics into the category, which I will agree have no place or need to be there. Some will say he's quitting because he didn't get his way, I can dispel that rumour after having spoken with him. I have a hard time understanding that people believe any one person could have such an effect on rules and regulations that an entire racing category would swing their way, there are simply too many of us in the class that have input.
On the upside Hudson will still be doing engine work at his shop in Kennewick WA. Here is an excerpt from a letter I received;
"After 20 years of drag racing I have decided to pursue other interests before I am too old to do so. Someday I may return to drag racing, but for now I will be selling all of my spare parts and pieces I've collected in 20 years.
I will still be doing the Suzuki GS and Kawasaki KZ & J engines for drag racing, GS crankshafts and machine work, as always in my shop. Robin and I will certainly miss all the great friends we've met over the years and we wish everyone good luck in their racing ventures." We wish you good luck too, Brian.
