September 7, 2011 Firebird scores seventh team championship BOISE, Idaho. The team from Firebird Raceway racked up 63 points this weekend for the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals scoring their seventh overall Team Championship and a belated birthday present for Firebird Raceway owner Bill New who put out the challenge to his team at last years champions banquet. New turned 77 years old last month and challenged his racers to the triple seven a year ago and they came through with a dominate win bettering Woodburn Dragstrip by nine points (round wins) who took second in the team standings with 54 followed by Portland Intl Raceway with 51 in third. Leading the individual champions was Dave Barcelon, Bremerton, Wash., and Bremerton Raceway in Super Pro who out ran Ed Van Der Kooi, Picture Butte, Alberta, CAN., and MHDRA Drag Strip with a lap of 7.88 seconds at 171.29 mph to Van Der Koois 7.90, 170.97. In the Pro class it was Steve Stuart of Estacada, Ore., running for Woodburn Dragstrip in his 66 Chevelle beating Jack Ward of Bremerton Raceway while Stuarts teammate Derrick Jackson, McMinnville, Ore., put his 67 Dodge pickup in the winners circle running 13.26 seconds at 92.84 mph to knock out the 06 Mustang of Dave Wilson, Vancouver, Wash., also running for Woodburn Dragstrip. The Motorcycle/Sled trophy went to Renegade Raceways Bob Henrie, Omak, Wash., on his 01 Polaris posting a time of 9.94 seconds and 128.66 mph winning over William Nitta of Seattle and Pacific Raceways on his 07 Suzuki. Championship Saturday BOISE, Idaho (Sept. 3, 2011) Dale Green led the NHRA Summit Racing Series Race of Champions winners today at Firebird Raceway along with Paul Comeau of Vancouver, Wash., and Portland Intl Raceway. The two will be joined by Mark Faul, and Kevin Brennan in advancing to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship in November at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif., to face off with the winners from the six other NHRA divisions across the country. Green, Covington, Wash., and running for Pacific Raceways ran down Jerry Odman, Pendleton, Ore., (Walla Walla Raceway) to capture the Super Pro category going 7.50 seconds at 151.92 mph in his 98 dragster. Comeau, Portland Intl Raceway grabbed the win in Pro with his 39 Chevy over Troy Johnston, Keyport, Wash., and Bremerton Raceway. Tacoma, Wash., racer Faul, put his 51 Chevy in the winners circle for the Sportsman class with a 13.21 second, 91.43 mph victory over Robert Schaffer, Hillsboro, Ore. Faul runs for Medicine Hat Raceway while Schaffer was representing Woodburn Dragstrip. Brennan, Chilliwack, B.C., CAN., and Mission Raceway Park, posted an 8.64 second lap on his 92 Suzuki at 147.10 mph for the win against teammate Al Omond, Surrey, B.C., on his Kawasaki. Local racer Christopher Northup won for the home team and Firebird Raceway in the High School class with his 66 Impala bettering Brandon Murthi, Delta, B.C., CAN. In the Jr. Drag Racing ranks it was Brianna Lindsey, Puyallup, Wash., (Bremerton Raceway) winning the Thunder category over Bradee Lowe, Agissiz, B.C., (Mission Raceway) and Ken Lang, Portland, Ore., (Portland Intl Raceway) over Charlie Dietrich, Battle Ground, Wash., (Portland Intl Raceway) in the Lightning class. In Friday nights gamblers race Darrell Pasher and Paul Jordan took the wins in the Electronics and No Electronics classes respectively. Pasher, Spokane, Wash., (Spokane County Raceway) held off Nick Nicholson, Vancouver, Wash., (Portland Intl Raceway) in his 75 Monza for the win and while Jordan, Butte, Mont., out of Lost Creek Raceway, drove his 70 Duster to victory over Jeff Staley, also of Vancouver, (Portland Intl Raceway). In the Motorcycle class, Dan Funderburg, Federal Way, Wash., (Pacific Raceways) defeated Buff Kobs, Coeur dAlene, Idaho, (Spokane County Raceway) and Ashley Lindsey, Puyallup, Wash., (Bremerton Raceway) took the trophy in Jr. Dragster over Courtney Widhalm, Yakima, Wash. BOISE, Idaho (Sept. 2, 2011) Racing kicked off today with nearly 500 racers for the NHRA Summit Racing Series Northwest Division Finals at Firebird Raceway, Boise, Idaho. Racers will be competing for both team and individual honors in the Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle/Snowmobile, High School, and Jr. Dragster classes. Todays racing consisted of time trials with racers representing 18 tracks across the Northwest including three from Canada. The team from Mission Raceway in Mission, B.C., CAN, is looking to defend their Team Championship from a year ago although the host team from Firebird is looking for their seventh overall team title. Also looking to defend their titles from 2010 are Mike Nicholson in Super Pro, Andy Closkey in Pro, John Floyd Jr., in Sportsman and Jacob Havens in Motorcycle. Racing continues on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with gates opening at 7:30. Following morning time trials will be the Race of Champions pitting the top points earners from each track in head to head action. The Race of Champions winners will advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship in November at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California boasting a purse of $118,000. Eliminations for the division championship get underway on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. Up for grabs on Sunday are a cash purse, contingency postings, the NHRA Wally trophy, and more importantly the bragging rights of being the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Champion. Drivers in seven classes: Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle/Snowmobile, High School and two Jr. Dragster, will be on hand to compete for team and individual honors at the event. Gates at Firebird Raceway will open at 8 a.m. Friday, 7:30 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday.
