Saturday final qualifying

A bit of shuffling in the Top Alclhol fields Saturday but the #1 in both classes stayed the same as Mark Niver and Sean O'Bannon both stayed atop their fields.

Shawn Cowie

BC's Shawn Cowie improved to #3 in TAD with a 5.38. Whitley surprisingly could not get out of the 5.40's and wound up #6 making the first rouind pairing of Cowie vs Whitely a big one for sure. Crew Chief Bill Moore of the Mundies Towing Cowie team loves to face up against arguably the best blown tuner in the last decade and a half.

...............a career best 6.13/234. Joe Delehay turned in his best ever shot in only his second lap of the season. He leads Comp after two sessions. This is being used as a warm-up for next weekends WCPM event in Tucson. Todd Hoerner is #6 with a 6.57/212 in his all new 09 GXP with a Sonny's 707 under the hood. Check out Todd's blog to see his adventures.

Considering the heat at Firebird, the A/Fuel cars ran pretty well including a 280 mph shot by Del Cox jr (a 5.36 to go along with it). Mark Niver leads with a 5.35. For the blown contingent, Shawn Cowie has the lead so far and is sitting #4 with a 5.399. #5 through 8 are also blown cars and they include the three cars which ran 5.20's at Pomona. Jim Whitely, Chris Demke and Ed Schmeekle are all in the field but all three should pick up their ets on Saturday. Seattle's Dale Carlson driving Hugh Ridley's BAD is #7 with a solid 5.52/260. The bump should be in the mid 5.40's by the end of qualifying.

Sean O'Bannon is #1 in TAFC with a 5.65. The bump is already a 5.82 so I expect it to go in the low 70's by the time Saturday is complete.

In Comp the big news was an unfortunate crash by Tyler Hogan in his new C/DA dragster. The car got loose around 300 feet and turned sideways and then rolled on its side before fuel spilling out of the fuel cell caught fire. The driver was okay and the car really does not look to bad.

Photos below.

A gallery sequence of the crash is here.

Alberta's Byron Setters and Tom Nolan are 6 and 7 in Super Stock.

In Top Sportsman, five cars are in the sixes and there will be a full field as 33 cars have made runs already. Top Dragster has a huge field of over 50 cars and Arizpna's Denny Hill ripped of a stout 6.10 to lead the pack.

Friday wrap up (Courtesy NHRA marketing and DRC)
In the first rounds of qualifying at Firebird International Raceway, local Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Mark Niver of Phoenix, Ariz., and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Sean O'Bannon from Ontario, Calif., took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes. This weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, which runs through Sunday, is the first of seven in Pacific division competition
Niver owned the track today, by running a 5.350-second, 264.23 mph pass to take the top spot. The local racer ran only a limited schedule last year and is hoping to start off divisional competition with a win on Sunday. The always competitive Del Cox Jr. of Downey, Calif., is currently qualified at the No.2 spot clocking in at 5.364 seconds at 280.08 mph.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, O'Bannon made a 5.651-second, 257.87 mph run to claim the pole. Preseason testing at Firebird earlier this year has definitely paid off for the team, in which valuable passes and data have been collected and analyzed. Dropping into the No.2 qualifying position is Roger Bateman of Calgary, Alb.

Comp Eliminator is lead by Joe Delehay, Calgary, Alb.; Tibor Kadar from Peoria, Ariz., took the top spot in Super Stock; and Jack Foshee, Taylor, Ariz., drove to the top of the list in Stock Eliminator. Canyon, Texas, resident Greg Lair outran the field in Top Sportsman; Denny Hills, Gilbert, Ariz., leads Top Dragster, and Michael Vattioni, Visalia, Calif., took the No.1 qualifying position in Sportsman Motorcycle with a near perfect 0.001-second reaction time.

Racing continues Saturday with gates opening at 7:30 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials begin at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday's gates open at 7:30 a.m. with eliminations beginning at 8 a.m. First round of eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled at noon.

General Admission / Pit Pass -- $28 on Saturday & Sunday.. For more information please call Firebird Int'l Raceway, (602) 268-0200.
