Photos courtesy Bill Jeffery, Dean Murdoch and Rich Carlson Thursday, Friday gallery is posted Sunday Eliminations Top Alcohol Funny Car The Alcohol classes in the North West seem to alternate their stremnghts every few years. The last few years have been a bit lean in the TAFC class, but there have been highlights or flashes of competitiveness that keep the faithful coming back. Bucky Austin, Brian Hough, Clint Thompson, Roger Bateman, and local Tim Nemeth have been the strongest, most consistent runners in the past half decade or so. This year the look got worse with the loss of Bucky Austin. Three years ago, Roger Bateman retired (yes he resurfaced, but is in another division). Luckily a few Canadian teams have improved their program to the expent that there is hope for a competitive field. THe Red Deer based Renegade Racing team, consiting of Owner Geoff Goodwin, tuner Wally Protz and American driver Ken Kraus have run 5.60's in their last half dozen events, and Edson Alberta's John Evanchuk and the "Red Wolf" team, have changed motor programs and are getting some tuning assistance from a notable NW guru. THe field at MRP consisted of only 8 cars so there would not be a bump spot and the car techically did not have to push their rides to make the field, and a couple did not push their rides. Randy parker had major shake issues with his wild new bodied Mustang, and did not make a full lap down the track. His best was a slow 9 somethng, but he knew he would play on Sunday so he did not make all the qualifying rounds. Dave Germain had mechanical and traction issues as well but did turn in a one decent run, a 6.08 at a slowing 211mph. Brad Hansen was the other driver who did not make all three laps, he missed round one on Friday. His best run was a pedalling 6.73@224 mph. The top five quick cars included Chilliwack's Tim Nemeth in the # 5 spot with one run in the 5's, a 5.92 @ 243, in his first run on Friday. His other two laps were a tire shaking 6.16 and a loose off the throttle mid six. John Evanchuk had 2 very consistent qualifying efforts, a pair of 5.79's and a tire shaking loose 6.03. Unfortunately for John his best effort was in the test n tune of Thursday. 1 3 Brian Hough, Junction City OR, '02 Firebird

Lots of anticipation on the local front in Comp, after the Boise event, where Bob Marshall was #1 qualifier, and went to the final round there. His factored ets were in the mid 7 0's, so with the right weather here, he possibly could go even lower. But managing the extra hp at a sea level track would be very tricky. The biggest disappointment in the class was the lack of cars. Only 12 comp teams were here when at the very least 16 were expected. With weather that was pretty promising it was a huge letdown for sure. Mark Stewart layed down the only solid number in Comp with a 62 under 8.790 in his G/SMA Achieva. Marshall did have starting line traction problems and his first pass, a good 7.130 proved to be his best run in qualifying. The other runs were pedal jobs. Dan Barton in his awesome Achieva was #2 with a .554 under 8.856. Perennial Division champ Jeff Lane was # 4 at .523 under along side Jim Warter who had the same under the index run. The other local drivers, Bruce Perkin was # 7 and Bob Kokotailo was # 10 in his "Superman" Firebird. Bob did not make round one due to mechanical issues. In eliminations, only one race in round one was relatively close and that was the Pat Byron, Brandon Huhtala match-up. Byron has struggled throughout qualifying in his new B/D but he got it sorted out for round one and ran a great 6.75@189 to nip Huhtala in the lights. The 1/4's were much better as all three runs were determined at the finish line. Round two 6003 G/SMA Dan Barton 0.065 8.859 145.11 (9.41) .55 under def. 6018 Jim Warter G/SM 0.137 9.022 134.44 (9.48) .458 under. Barton took the win against Jim Warter by just over a tenth, as he out performed him on both ends of the track.
Pat Byron continued his strong run in eliminations as he caught Randy Goff right at the stripe for a .003 margin of victory.
600 B/SR Jeff Lane 0.029 7.968 164.29 (8.58) 6.12 under def. 6222 Mark Stewart 0.029 8.799 152.69 (9.41) 0.611 under This final pairing was classic. Two of the toughest in the class squared off, and the race was what you would expect. Neither driver lifted on the top end, both wanted it bad. Reaction times were identical, with .029 lights. Lane had to chase Stewart down and he caught him at the 1318-foot mark, for a three-inch margin of victory. Lane picked up almost a tenth from his qualifying efforts thanks in part to the cool conditions on Sunday. The win gave Lane a well-deserved bye into the final round and a date with either Byron or Barton. That semi was over quick, as Byron left to early giving the easy win to Dan Barton. 600 Jeff Lane 0.039 8.084 144.74 (8.47 index) -0.386 def. 6003 Dan Barton 0.007 9.097 141.37 (9.36 index) -0.263 In the final round, Lane had to be the favourite as he was capable of going .6 under. But he did receive a .11 index hit compared to a .05 for Barton. Barton got a .032 lead off the starting line and held off Lane for only 1100 feet. He needed another 220 feet for the victory. The win goes to Lane his second of the season and a huge lead in the Division. Comp notables: Best Appearing car: Dan Barton Comp final qualifying

8.790 9.41 -0.620 Final round photos will be posted Tuesday Monday May 28, 2007 (all classes except Comp and TAD are featured. Comp and TA Tuesday) What a weekend at Mission Raceway........... ...............As one Track Official stated to me Monday morning, we finally caught a break, with the rain eventually coming down Sunday one hour after the event saw it's final pair go down the track. A great crowd on Saturday a good one on Sunday (despite of the threatening skies all day) and the usual mediocre Friday fan base saw one of the best divisional's at MRP in the last five years. Yes last year's Saturday edition was perhaps the greatest one-day performance in memory, but the overall package this past weekend was what keeps the fans coming back. Strong performance by the top two Sportsman classes in NHRA. Record-breaking runs by Stock and Super Stock and final round results that were to say the least, outstanding. A little bit of starting line high jinx, controversy, staging duals, drama and unfortunately disappointing mechanical woes kept most of the fans in their seats until the final round of Top Alcohol Funny Car was played out. Friday was a great opening day at Mission Raceway after perhaps one of the best Thursday Test n Tune days prior to the event. Unfortunately on Thursday, two TAD teams had issues, which prevented them from making qualifying efforts on the weekend. Hough Ridley Racing, a new team from the valley area had friend and veteran TAD driver Gary Ormsby Jr. in the seat of his new TAD. Hugh was set to drive but hernia issues and an upcoming operation will keep him out of the seat until late in the year. Ormsby was happy to get back in the seat, but mechanical and new car blues kept them out of the field on the weekend. The new Ken Gilmore car was set to debut as well, but valve train issues (something apparently somewhat common to the new BAE XI head) kept them out from trying to make the field as well. Stock Eliminator
370 cars were on the grounds for the event, which
started with Stock qualifying out of the gate. Two records were
set in the class, but likely a handful more would have been set
if record were allowed on Sunday as the cool weather meant break-out
performances by many of the drivers. By the time Saturday qualifying
was complete the guy from all the way up in Fairbanks Alaska, John
Hill was # 1 with a 1.341 under 11.609 in his 87 Camaro. Tommy Gaynor
Sr. in his C/FIA Firebird (one of two record setters) was #2 with
a 1.33 under 10.670. 45 cars in total were in the field. By the
time the 1/4 finals were set six of the top Stock competitors from
Division six were left in the field including Jody Lang, Brad Plourd,
local Cory Thompson, Bill Kost, car builder Alf Wiebe and Tom Gaynor.
Hired Gun Brad Plourd got an easy win over local favourite Cory
Thompson when Cory broke right off the starting line. Chilliwack's
Alf Wiebe had a tenth on the tree over Kost and got the win and
Tom Gaynor defeated Division Six standout Lang when Jody took too

In Super Stock, 26 cars were on the grounds to try and run under their indexes. Larry Dowty was the only driver to go 1.30 under or better and he was #1 with a 13.04 in his '99 SS/GS Grand Am. Sean Cour was #2 with a 1.242 under 9.305 in his 05 Cavalier GT/BA. Making a return to the 1/4 mile after along hiatus was Edmonton's Ken Riech. He was the top Canadian, sitting #4 in his 93 SS/AS Camaro. In Eliminations, 11 of the 13 first round winners came from the bottom half of the field. Don Thomas (Alberta), Brad Potter (Pitt Meadows), Jim Isherwood (Mission) and Mike Nottingham (New West) were the only Canadian drivers to advance. Isherwood and Thomas both went into round two and faced each other in the1/4's. Thomas came out on top due to his great .009 light. Both broke out, but Isherwood (.029rt) had to break out further trying to catch him. In the semis, both races saw the drivers leave against their opponents within thousandths of a second, making the stripe the determining factor. Alberta's Thomas got a narrow win over Dino Kost as he ran closer to his number. A .060 package will defeat a .075 package every time. In the other semi, both driver broke out, and it was Cour who went under the least putting two late model Chevy's in the final round. What a final it was as both drivers ran right on their dial-ins. Thomas ran a 9.89 on his 9.89 but Cour was .014 better at the tree and his dead on 9.31 gave him the stripe by 15/thou. turnout with 56 cars making first round on Saturday afternoon. Close
to half (12) the first round winners were of the Canuck variety,
and it was the North of the border drivers who ended up battling
for the Wally and the cash. Five Canadians were in the round of
eight, and three of four were in the semi finals. Casey Plaizer
defeated and Chad Barclay defeated Reg Wilson when Wilson was waay

This class has become the Corvette roadster class or at least an open bodied class. Over half the classes first round winners had an open cockpit. The 1/4's saw John Dalrymple, Dave Archambault, Kevin Griffiths and Steve Laskowske all advanced, with the one notable race being Laskowske running a perfect 9.900 to take out Chris Cannon. The other was a double Canuck battle with Archambault's racing against Marv Wiebe. It was a killer as the two drivers were both double 0 off the starting line and the Calgary native Archambault getting the win by .003. In the semis, Archambault cut the tree down too close and went .002 red, giving the win to Griffiths and Dalrymple took out Laskowske with a great light (008) and starting advantage. In the final, Dalrymple had a huge gathering, sitting on eggs shells as John was in the final with his brand new Corvette roadster. Griffith's was in a 27 Ford roadster. Griffiths had 2/100's advantage on the starting line but took way too much stripe (.037 too much, giving the double breakout win to Dalrymple.

The final round was saw two of the best in the business in the North West duke it out. The starting line start by both drivers (.012 by Castillo and .016 by Seekins) showed how great they both are, but the younger finalist Castillo was dead on at the finish line to a zero (8.900) giving him a .012 package and the Wally. What a final round. Seekins did take the stripe but went .012 under the 8.90 giving Castillo the automatic win. The two-wheeled rockets were absent a couple locals, with Anita Cunningham out with injury and Mission point leader Al Omond deciding to skip the event (strange decision IMO). The semi finals saw two Suzuki's (Jeff Havens and Steve Miller, who were the #1 and #2 qualifiers as well) take out two Kawasaki's (Nick Kessler and Michael Campbell) riders. Havens got a big .038 starting line advantage and ran closer to his dial giving him a .042 margin at the finish line. 34 of the long skinny cars, 2 roadsters and one alky flopper made up the field of 37 Top Dragsters competitors. The # 1 qualifier was local Mission driver Bob Haffner. The Remple/Haffner team usually contest the TAD class, but running a roots blower against all the top dogs with nitro and PSI's would be a lesson in futility. Both are die-hard racers and they decided to play in Top Dragster. The team only made one lap, the first session on Friday but boy was it filled with excitement. The team was looking for a low six-second pass, and right off the hit the run looked very strong. At the 800-foot mark, all heck broke loose and a huge fireball lit up the back end of the car. Bob clicked it off before the finish line but the scoreboard still lit up a strong 6.13 at 213 mph. The car torched a head gasket due to a plugged nozzle and did minor damage but enough to keep the team from running in eliminations. The top three cars were all blown alcohol versions, and Brian Prezler in his mountain motored carburated dragster was the quickest non-blown car turning in a great 6.805. Three of the six five second rides made in to the round of 10, and two of them Prezler and Marvin Mueller went to the 1/4 finals. Both drivers were ousted in the 1/4's leaving Rick Ball Stan Leercamp and Dale Green to fight it out for the Wally. Ball had the bye run and Green defeated Leercamp. Both were better than .02 at the starting line, but Leercamp took too much stripe breaking out by 8/1000ths. While the two cars were .09 different in qualifying, both dialed in with a 7.13. A couple more sub .02 lights in the final round, and this one was going to be a battle at the stripe. WHAT A FINISH!!! Both drivers ran on their number, with Ball hitting it with a ZERO! The finish line margin was .005 for Rick Ball. Both Drivers had better than .020 packages. Unbelievable!!

One of the biggest questions throughout the weekend was where is the title sponsors two cars and drivers. Well it was prior family commitments that kept Frank and Curtis Tamez and their award-winning Mustangs away from the race. Top Sportsman had 27 cars attempt to qualify for the 8.19 minimum, and 25 made the cut. This was the class in my opinion that will become THE class to watch on the divisional front. With the likely reclassification of Top Alcohol to the National level only within a half-decade, the Top Sportsman class or "Minnie" Pro Mods will be the feature class at the Divisional level. Yes, Comp eliminator is next in line to TA at this moment but, with a range of ets from mid sixes to high eights or even nines it is too diversified in the et department to be the bigger fan favourite. Close side-by-side six and seven-second door-cars with a range of power adders from Nitrous, to big inch, to Blowers, to Turbos will be the choice of the fans IMO. At Mission this past weekend, the range in combos had everything you would expect. The big surprise was which car was near the top of the field. The blown Mustang belonging to Rash Dhaliwal was no surprise being at the top of the field, with a great (and I believe career best 6.685/20852). But the # 2 car was none other than a 500 cu in Pro Stock legal Grand Am. No mountain motor, no blower no turbo and no Nitrous. And it was the first weekend where the car made a complete 1320-foot lap. In their first lap the team went 6.98, then in lap two, on the way to the staging lanes they had a bit of an incident and the car's front end got damaged. Thanks to Ken Lowe and TOKEN Fiberglass they made the repairs in time. In lap number three the team hoped for even a bit more and got a 6.88/199 to end up # 2. # 3 was Todd Hoerner who was the epitome of perseverance. Todd has struggled big time with the set-up on his new car. The monster 820 cu in bullet was putting so much torque on the chassis they struggled big time with getting the car off the starting line. On his best lap in qualifying he pedalled the car a couple times and still ran a 7 flat at 207 mph. The biggest question for Todd was what would the car do in eliminations, and what should they dial the car to run. It should run a 6.70 or 6.60, but they were nowhere near that yet. The other six second performer was expected to be Dal Sangha in his turbo'ed Mustang, but the new engine diaper got too close to the headers on the car and it started a fire causing quite a bit of wiring damage. In eliminations, a couple of the six-second drivers made it to round two and five of the seven round three competitors were form Canada. And the # 1 qualifier was one of the 1/4 finalists/. Unfortunately, Dhaliwal could not make the turn around time quick enough, which is one of the downfalls of the class, and something that will have to be addressed in the future. Oh ya, Todd Hoerner got his car figured out to the tune of an early shut off 6.70 at only 201 mph. It likely would have been a 6.66 if he had of ran it right through. Unfortunately for Todd he dialed in a 6.83. By the time the semi finals were up two Canadians and two Americans would battle. One of each made it to the final round With Randy Johnson defeating Dave Richardson as both has great double "0" rts. Both went under their number but Johnson was closer giving him the win. Stefan Kondolay was the Canadian to reach the final as he took out Robert Matthews in the ex-Dave Jackson Nova. Both those drivers also broke out, but it was Kondolay who was closer. The final round would be a tough one, with certainly two of the best drivers in the NW set to battle. Johnson has won in Super Comp, Top Comp and Super Pro with the family Cavalier, while Kondolay has won in Super Gas more consistently that any other driver of late. Plus he is becoming a force in the CWDS. The starting line advantage went to Johnson by .01. At the finish line it was the second dead heat in a final round, as both drivers hit the 1320 at the same time. Unfortunately for Kondolay, he had to go further under his dial in to get there. The win went to Randy Johnson by virtue of his number being only .002 too quick. Kondolay went .012 too quick. Another very close final and a very good drag race. Entry list for TA classes TAD
TAFC 1. Sean O'Bannon (Unconfirmed) If most of these car do show up it will be a battle royal for sure. The biggest missing link is Bucky Austin who is between cars. The new one will be ready soon, but not in time. Comp will be great with three true tough local in the hunt. Bob Marshall (B/AA), Bruce Perkin (E/SM) and Rob Harrison (K/A). It is possible that Craig Donaldson will be out with the ex Bob Marshall car (B/A) as well, Maybe even Trevor Lowe in AA/PM Top Sportsman will see the best field in the NW as the CWDS teams will fill much of the field. Top Dragster will be tough as well. Unfortunately, the "West Coast Hemi Shootout" will have a year off, as 4-6 of the cars will not be in attendance this season, Look for 2008 to be the biggest Shootout ever! NHRA event preview MISSION, B.C. -- Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson, who finished second in the division's TAFC points last year, is currently in first place in the standings. Although the class's defending champion, Brian Hough, Junction City, Ore., failed to make the eight-car field at the race in Las Vegas, he did score a win at the NHRA national event in Baytown, Texas. There will also be a new face on the Northwest division TAFC circuit. Sean O'Bannon of Alta Loma, Calif., who last year piloted his TAD to the No. 2 slot in the Pacific division, earned his TAFC license earlier this year. He has been to one race in his new class, in Las Vegas, but did not qualify. In 2006, Stefan Kondolay of Sardis, B.C., earned his third division Super Gas title. The former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League competitor scored a win at the Lucas Oil race at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., last year and will be in Mission this year trying to earn his fourth division crown. Veteran Super Street racer Gerry Epp of Abbottsford, B.C., earned his first division championship in 2006. And although he did not pick up a win last year, he scored enough points to earn the title over Stefan Kondolay's father, Bill. Lordco B.C. Nationals Drag Races Roll Into Mission Mission, B.C., May 18, 2007 Its the time of year that every drag racing fan waits for, when the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series returns to town. Its the Lordco B.C. Nationals at Mission Raceway Park Friday May 25 through Sunday May 27, and the biggest NHRA drag race in Canada, also the biggest motorsport event in B.C., will have something for every fan of the worlds fastest form of racing. Topping the list are the awesome Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, 4,000- horsepower monsters that run the quarter mile in 5 seconds at over 260 mph! Over two dozen of these cars are entered, each looking for a spot in their respective 8-car fields. Canadian drivers should figure prominently, with a few entered in each type of car. This will be Shawn Cowie's first NHRA points-paying race in his new Alcohol Dragster, and already, the Richmond driver is listed as one of the favourites at Mission due to his having run one of the quickest and fastest runs ever for this type of car, in testing earlier. His mechanic is the legendary Bucky Austin, who won't be driving at Mission this time. At the end of last year, Chilliwack's Tim Nemeth was starting to find some consistent performance in his Funny Car, and he should be the top local contender in that class. The action will be non-stop at the Lordco B.C. Nationals, and when the dragsters and funny cars take a break, hundreds of the best sportsman racers in B.C. will take on the invaders from Alberta and the West Coast of the U.S. in several different eliminator categories, vying for their share of the nearly $140,000 US in cash and contingency awards posted. One of those categories features the wild, wheelstanding muscle cars in Super Stock Eliminator, joined as always by their less radical brothers in Stock Eliminator. You'll see a combination of original '60's era favourites here along with newer cars similar to those in showrooms today. Its three days packed with racing action, starting each morning, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at 9:00 am. The feature Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars have qualifying sessions at 4:00 pm Friday, and 2:00 and 4:00 pm Saturday, and their first round of eliminations goes Sunday at noon. Fridays admission of just $10.00 includes pit pass, while Saturday and Sunday admission is $20.00 each day, plus $5.00 for pit pass. Children 12 and under are admitted for free with a paid adult. Rumours of the track facility being flooded by next week are completely unfounded, the level of the Fraser River is currently no higher than usual, and the event is expected to proceed as normal. Mission Raceway Park is located on Highway 11 between the Mission Bridge and the Lougheed Highway. |
