Spokane County Raceway

Div 6 Lucas Oil event (race # 3 of 7)

Elimination's

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Eliminations are complete and the winners have been crowned at the inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event hosted at the newly renovated Spokane County Raceway. This wraps up the third of seven events in Northwest division competition in which racers are in search of divisional and national championships. Local winners walking away with the coveted Wally trophy included Mike Strickland, Moses Lake, Wash., in Top Sportsman and Sportsman Motorcycle racer Buff Kobs of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Strickland drove his beautiful '07 GT500 to the finish line at 7.161 seconds, 195.70 mph to defeat Todd Fricke of Pasco, Wash., to pick up his 1st NHRA Wally. Kobs made a quick trip over the state line and drove his '95 Kawasaki right into the winner's circle by defeating top qualifier Danny Lee Patridge of Kennewick, Wash., in the finals.

It is not uncommon in the sport of drag racing to see a father-son duo competing at the same event. The unique part of this occurrence was the Roseburg, Ore., residents were rookies and Jim Pappas grabbed the win light in Top Dragster and Tom Pappas was victorious in Super Comp.

The Top Alcohol Dragster title went to No.1 qualifier Shawn Cowie of Delta, B.C., who picked up his fourth divisional win of the year. Cowie posted a lap of 5.495 seconds at 264.29 mph against the defending Northwest divisional champ, Joey Severance from Spanaway, Wash. Ken Webster out of Red Deer, Alb., also the weekend's No.1 qualifier, picked up his 1st NHRA Wally by defeating the Pacific division's Ron August on a red light in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final.

Other Spokane County Raceway event winners included Comp Eliminator ace Doug Lambeck of Corona Del Mar, Calif.; Jody Lang, Puyallup, Wash., picks up back to back divisional wins in Super Stock; and Greg Kielman from Vancouver, Wash., goes back to back in Stock. The Super Gas win went to Jerry Earp of Edmonds, Wash.; Jay Fulcher, Yakima, Wash., grabbed the light Super Street; and the Super Pro contest went to Dwaine Ringguth from Grande Prairie, AB.

The division's next Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event is slated for June 19-21 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash.

Final qualifying

SPOKANE, Wash. Pairings are set for Sunday's eliminations at Spokane County Raceway. With qualifying complete, Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Shawn Cowie of Delta, B.C., and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Ken Webster from Red Deer, Alb., grabbed the No.1 spots at the inaugural Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Over 3,000 eager drag racing fanatics made their way to the renovated track to enjoy side by side racing at over 265 mph.
Cowie posted a 5.465-second, 265.22 mph pass in qualifying to place him just ahead of Joey Severance from Spanaway, Wash. Cowie is piecing together a dominating year by winning out-of-division races in Phoenix and Las Vegas to go along with his victory at Mission Raceway Park last month. Because of the odd number of cars in competition, he will have a bye run in the first round of eliminations Sunday.

Webster will be looking for his first win of the season going into Sunday, qualified at the top spot. His run of 5.741 seconds at 252.05 mph catapulted him to the top of the field and in front of current divisional points leader Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore.

After two days of intense qualifying, there were no changes to these following No.1 spots from Friday's top competitors. Rob Harrison, N. Vancouver, B.C., remained at the top of the Comp Eliminator class alongside Super Stocker Byron Setters of Red Deer, Alb., and Bill Edgeworth of Tacoma, Wash., in Stock. Barry Daniluk of Red Deer, Alb., held the No.1 spot in the division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman class with the Top Dragster category being led by Steve Cook of Rexburg, Idaho. The Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson pole stayed with Danny Lee Patridge from Kennewick, Wash.

Racing continues Sunday with gates opening at 8 a.m. Eliminations will begin at 9 a.m. Eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car begin at noon. General Admission is $25 on Sunday, which includes a pit pass! For more information please call Spokane County Raceway at (509) 244-3333 or visit www.SpokaneCountyRaceway.com.
