Boise Idaho, Firebird Raceway June 6, 2005 Sunday finals photos courtesy Brian Losness, nitrophotomotorsports Kelowna's Mike Shannon won Super Gas for the second time in three years at Firebird over the weekend at the 35th Ignitor.
Mike Shannon took out Dave Kelly in the semis Shannon defeated Chris Cannon in the battle of Corvettes. Cannon drives a popular 63 style Corvette and Shannon is in a topless 57 Corvette Roadster. The numbers were, .027 10.213 to a .014 10.231. Also in Super Gas, 2003 Div champ Stefan Kondolay went four rounds in his 2004 Cavalier. A number of other "Canucks" fared well at Boise, as Cory Thompson came "oh so close" to getting his first Stock divisional win. He was edged out by perennial champion Jody Lang in the final, .013 12.852 (12.85 di) - .040 11. 580 (11.59 di) Rookie driver George Evans went all the way to the semi finals in his first complete Super Comp divisional event. He was defeated by eventual R/U Ed Olpin. Rob Harrison (J/A) qualified #3 in his Cavalier but went out in round two to Ray Hadford.. Bob Marshall's first whole race in Comp (B/AA) finished with a first round r/u, as he went out to R/U and #4 qualifier Dave Barcelon
Marshall did not have the fireworks he had at Mission. Qualified in the middle of the pack.
Bruce Perkin went out early (rd 1). Engine builder Mark Stewart went three rounds. Todd Gluch (below) went on to win Top Comp even with this huge wheelstand in qualifying.
Nostalgia Top Fuel and Fuel Altereds were the main show at Boise not Top Alcohol, and to no surprise Jack Harris was the dominant force as he defeated fellow Idahoan, Scott Mason in the final round, 5.90 / 257 - 622/ 220
Ricky Ruiz defeated Gary Read in the Fuel Altered final round. Ruiz form Sparks, NV drove his `23 T Roadster to a 6.226, 232.73 defeat of Read from Apple Valley, CA, who smoked the tires.
Mike Scott (below) won Bike and has the early lead in the points.
The next Div six Lucas Oil event is in two weeks at Pacific Raceway, June 17-19.
Boise, Idaho -- Alan Ellis, of Mapleton, Utah, won the Competition Eliminator title in his popular A/AA, Rod Stults, of Marysville, Wash., took Super Stock, and Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., gathered in Stock Eliminator at the NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Firebird Raceway. It was all part of Firebirds 35th Annual Napa Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Don Wiebold Ford. Ellis hit 7.046 at 189.59 mph in the final with his screaming roadster. That was enough to stop Dave Barcelon, of Bremerton, Wash., in his F/Altered Chevy Cavalier. Also taking Lucas Series titles were Brandon Yoder, of Gresham Wash., in Super Comp; Mike Shannon, of Kelowna, B.C. in Super Gas, while Missoula, Mont.s Brian Birky took Super Street. Also on the Ignitor menu was a battle of nostalgia-style Top Fuel racers called the Nitro Knockout. Jack Harris, one of the undisputed champions in this form of racing, scored a three-round decision in the Knockout. He took the final round with a victory over fellow Utah racer Scot Mason. It was a unanimous decision, 5.90, 257.51 mph to 6.228, and only 207.80 as Mason had mechanical troubles near the finish line. Also on tap was a field of Northwest Division Top Comp dragsters with Todd Gluch of Jordan Valley, Ore., hitting 7.773, 168.22 mph in the final to defeat former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing standout Justin Lamb of Henderson, Nev. Lamb actually went quicker at 7.720, 173.14 mph. In Sportsman Motorcycle action, Mike Scott, Sumner, Wash., rode his 01 Kawasaki all the way to victory lane, beating Coeur d'Alene, Idahos Buff Kobs. The NHRA Northwest Division will next be in action at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., in two weeks, June 17-19. Oregon City, Oregons Adam Bowdish, driving a 1989 Pontiac Trans Am in the D/Super Modified class, leads the qualifying list in competition Eliminator, 0.634 seconds under his class index with a run of 8.796 seconds. Jeff Lane, the former Super Stock standout from North Bend, Wash., is second in a 90 Olds Cutlass B/Econo Altered and Rob Harrison from Vancouver, B.C., is third in his new J/Altered Chevrolet Cavalier. In Super Stock, Kevin Cour leads the pack at 1.292 seconds under his GT/DA index at 9.868 in his Chevy Cavalier, while Jon Percy from Pocatello is holding up the Mopar and homestate honors with a 1.241-under 9.299 effort in his throwback 64 Plymouth Savoy SS/BA entry. Joe Sorenson is the leader in Stock Eliminator with his Woodburn, Ore.-based B/SA 69 Camaro. He is a whopping 1.432 under at 10.498. Veteran Bill Kost, of Renton, Wash., is second at 1.316 under in his venerable K/SA 77 Olds Cutlass. Other Lucas Oil Series categories in competition this weekend are Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. Drivers in those categories took time trials again today. They will all compete in the first round of eliminations at 9 a.m. Sunday. In all more than 300 cars are in competition. In addition to the Lucas Series entries the Northwest Division also features action in Top Comp and Sportsman Motorcycle. Kevin Wayman, of West Jordan, Utah, is the No. 1 qualifier in Top Comp at 6.857 seconds and 194.25 mph in his dragster. Sportsman Motorcycles qualify based on their reaction times. Sumner, Wash. Rider Mike Scott heads the list with his Kawasaki with a .004 reaction. No. 2 at .006 is Mile Hauer of Seattle. The featured program being presented by Firebird Raceway for the Ignitor is a field of nostalgia Top Fuel cars running in the Nitro Knockout. They too thundered through their qualifying runs Saturday and Utahs own Jack Harris leads all entries with a 5.923, 243.37 mph last ditch run that edged out Terry Cox, of Clarksburg, Calif., who ran 5.933, 244.10 mph. Both drivers made those runs in the evening session. Sunday the Nitro Knockout will face off with eliminations beginning at noon. The 35th running of the famed Napa Auto Parts Ignitor, presented by Dan Wiebold Ford started Friday with qualifying and time trials for many of the categories that will be featured. Drivers in competition Eliminator, Super Stock, and Stock took qualifying shots at the track Friday, while those in Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street ran time trials. The Northwest Division also features powerful Top Comp dragsters and Sportsman Motorcycles along with the regular Lucas Oil Series categories. Veterans Dean Carter (Comp), Jim Weakland (Super Stock) and Jody Lang (Stock) all hope to repeat their 2004 wins at Firebird. But thus far, none of them are among the leaders. Tomorrow and Sunday the Nitro Knockout, featuring the wild front-engine AA/Fuel Dragsters and AA/Fuel Altereds, will assault the senses of fans with nitro-methane powered runs. They will run qualifying on Saturday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and face off in elimination beginning at noon on Sunday. Gates at Firebird Raceway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying for all classes begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Sunday.
