Pacific Raceways will host the Jet Chevrolet Lucas Oil Championships, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, June 17-19. The race is the third of seven on the NHRA Northwest division schedule. It will feature drivers in eight categories competing for points leading to divisional and national championships. The divisions Top Comp class and Sportsman Motorcycle category will also run in conjunction with the event. On Saturday, Pacific Raceways will present Armageddon Eve of Destruction featuring Jet Cars, AA/Supercharged Coupes and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car eliminations. Because of the rain-delayed event, the divisional points for the TAD and TAFC classes are up in the air. In the dragster class, defending division champion Steve Federlin is the only driver to have scored any points divisionally. The Oregon City, Ore., racer was runner-up at an out-of-division event in Tucson, Ariz. In TAFC, Dale VanGundy is the only racer on the board at the division level. VanGundy, of Anaheim, Calif., failed to make the eight-car field at an out-of-division race in Bakersfield, Calif. Federlin, who was runner-up at Pacific Raceways last year, may have his hands full in 2005 with rookie TAD driver Hillary Will. Will is a 25-year-old financial analyst from Scotia, Calif., wheeling her familys TAD in the Northwest division. Will started out bracket racing as a teenager, moved up to Super Comp and, after graduating with an economics degree from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, she decided to get her TAD license. Wills dad, Steve, purchased a TAD operation thinking the family would run in Top Comp or Super E. But when TAFC standout Bucky Austin approached the Wills with the idea of building motors for a TAD, they accepted his offer. With Austin making the calls, Steve Will doing the tuning, and Hillary behind the wheel, the team is off to a fast start. They have run in two NHRA national events this year, powering their way to the No. 1 qualifier position at both of them and then on to the final rounds. Will was runner-up to Federlin at the NHRA season opener in Pomona, Calif., and scored her first national event win over former Northwest division champ Joey Severance in Las Vegas. At the rain-delayed Mission race, she is the No. 1 qualifier with a 5.371-second, 267.37 mph effort. As for his own title fight in TAFC, Austin, who lives in Fife, Wash., has only competed at Mission Raceway so far this year. He finished qualifying in the No. 2 position behind Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore. In 2004, Austin won his third straight division title, scoring wins at Championship Raceway and at both Lucas Oil events at Woodburn Dragstrip. John Weaver of Orting, Wash., came in second in the point standings in 2004 after winning in Mission and in Kent. Just behind Weaver was Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson. Thompson was runner-up to Weaver in Mission and took the crown at Intermountain Motorsports Park in Acton, Mont. Gates at Pacific Raceways open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 10 a.m. and continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car have three qualifying sessions Friday, at 3, 6, and 9 p.m., and run eliminations Saturday starting at 3 p.m. The Armageddon Eve of Destruction begins at 7 p.m. Eliminations in all other classes start Sunday at 10 a.m. Tickets for the Jet Chevrolet Lucas Oil Championships are $15 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 7 to 14 years old are $4 each day and kids 6 and under are admitted free. Saturdays admission includes the Armageddon Eve of Destruction.
