Day one of qualifying and time trials

WOODBURN, Ore. -- Mother Nature and rain showers caused the cancellation of afternoon qualifying for the Les Schwab Tires Challenge Lucas Oil event at Woodburn Dragstrip.
NHRA and track officials ended qualifying on Friday just after 4 p.m. but not before Jon Percy of Pocatello, Idaho, grabbed the No. 1 spot in Super Stock followed by former national champion Jimmy DeFrank in second. Percy ran 9.097 seconds, 1.103 seconds under the index while DeFrank clocked in at 8.959 seconds, 1.091 under. Terry Sherrill of Klamath Falls, Ore. sits in fourth with an 8.409 second lap, 1.041 seconds under.

In Stock Eliminator, Don Wann put his '73 Satellite on top running 11.329 seconds and is followed by Bill Kost of Renton, Wash., and Mary Ann Method of Weston, Ore., in second and third respectively.

The '78 Kawasaki of Nick Kroske is on top in Sportsman Motorcycle followed by Mike Scott of Sumner, Wash. The motorcycle class qualifies off of reaction time with Kroske of Bend, Ore., recording a .012 second reaction time (.000 is perfect).

WOODBURN, Ore. Lucas Oil event # 4 of 7 in Division six

Preview

NHRA Northwest Division racers will compete at the Les Schwab Tires Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, July 8-10 at Woodburn Dragstrip. The race is the fourth of seven on the division's schedule and will feature drivers in eight classes including Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. The division's Top Comp and Sportsman Motorcycle classes will run in conjunction with the event as well.
Because of the rain-delayed event, drivers in Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) got their first opportunity to score in-division points in late June at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash. Steve Federlin won in TAD and Clint Thompson scored the victory in TAFC.

For Federlin, the reigning division champ from Oregon City, Ore., it was his second final-round appearance this year. He was runner-up at an out-of-division race in Tucson, Ariz., and his win at Pacific Raceways bolstered his lead in the point standings. Former division champion Brandon Johnson of Shelton, Wash., was runner-up to Federlin at Pacific Raceways, putting him in second place in the point standings.

Federlin, Johnson and the rest of the division's veteran TAD drivers could have their hands full this year with the appearance of rookie driver Hilary Will of Scotia, Calif. Will went to the semis at Pacific Raceways but has made her presence felt to her fellow Northwest Division racers on the national event level. At the season's first national event, in Pomona, Calif., Will was runner-up to Federlin and two months later in Las Vegas she beat Joey Severance, another former Northwest Division champ, for her first win in TAD.

Will is a 25-year-old financial analyst from Scotia, Calif., behind the wheel of her family's TAD. She started out bracket racing as a teenager, moved up to Super Comp and, after graduating with an economics degree from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, decided to get her TAD license. Will's dad, Steve, purchased a racing operation thinking the family would run in Top Comp or Super E. But when TAFC standout Bucky Austin approached the Wills with the idea of building motors for a TAD, they accepted his offer.

With Austin making the calls, Steve Will doing the tuning, and Hillary in the driver's seat, the team is off to a fast start. They have run in the two NHRA national events, powering their way to the No. 1 qualifier position at both of them and then on to the final rounds. At the rain-delayed divisional race in Mission, she is the No. 1 qualifier with a 5.371-second, 267.37 mph effort.

The outlook in the division's TAFC class is even less clear. Austin, a perennial favorite and Fife, Wash., resident, has seven division titles to his credit but so far this year he has only been to one national event where he lost in the first round. He did qualify in the No. 2 spot at Mission Raceway and at Pacific Raceways he qualified third before suffering a first-round loss.

Thompson, a resident of Klamath Falls, Ore., took the points lead with his win at Pacific Raceways and Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., is just behind him with a runner-up finish at the same race.

Gates at Woodburn Dragstrip open at 8 a.m. each day and qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin Friday at 9 a.m. and will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have one qualifying pass on Friday, at 3 p.m., and two on Saturday, at noon and 4 p.m. Eliminations are slated to begin Sunday at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.

Tickets for the Les Schwab Tires Challenge are $15 Friday, $20 Saturday and $25 Sunday. Children 6 to 14 years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.

Woodburn Dragstrip is located at 7730 Highway 219, 1? miles off Interstate 5 at Woodburn exit 271. For more information call the track, (503) 982-4461.

NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Series competitors will head back north of the boarder for their next event. Originally scheduled in Portland, Ore., the race was moved to Mission Raceway Park August 5-7.
