Race #1 in Division 1 from Virginia Motorsport Park

Sunday eliminations

DINWIDDIE, Va. -- Cold temperatures and wind prevented NHRA and track officials at Virginia Motorsports Park from finishing the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event today. Racers in Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Street, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster made their way to the winner's circle while the finals in Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Comp and Super Gas will be run at another of the division's Lucas Oil events. Among the winners were Super Stock racer Mark LeBrecque and Dan Fletcher in Stock Eliminator.
LeBrecque, a resident of West Springfield, Mass., wheeled his '95 S-10 truck to the win over Joseph Franco III of Babylon, N.Y., in his '85 Camaro. Fletcher, a venerable racer from Churchville, N.Y., was behind the wheel of his '69 Camaro when he scored the win over Monty Bogan, Jonesville, S.C. in his '67 Camaro.

Super Street competitor Peter Kivett, Millersville, Md., took the win, knocking off Vinny Laudicina of Boca Raton, Fla. The Top Sportsman trophy went home with Fred Gallo, Shirley, N.Y., after he beat Michael Kaufman, Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and in Top Dragster, Mickey Whaley, Kinston, N.C., grabbed the win over Chester, N.J., resident John Maggiulli Jr.

The final in Top Alcohol Dragster will be between Karen Stalba of Hammonton, N.J., and Dave DeAngelis of Middlesex, N.J. The Top Alcohol Funny Car final will pit reigning division and national champion Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J., against Bob Tasca III of Cranston, R.I.

NHRA Northeast Division racers head to Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, May 25-27.

Final qualifying

DINWIDDIE, Va. -- Qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Virginia Motorsports Park was cut short today due to rain. NHRA and track officials waited four hours before deciding to pull the plug and locking in the qualifying fields for Sunday's eliminations. John Finke of Selkirk, N.Y., is the top qualifier in Top Alcohol Dragster and Frank Manzo, Morganville, N.J., leads the Top Alcohol Funny Car contingent. The Alcohol cars were originally slated to run eliminations tonight but the shortened schedule has pushed them back to Sunday.
Finke peeled off a 5.375-second, 269.51 mph pass on Friday to put him in the No. 1 spot. Second place qualifier, Dave De Angelis, Middlesex., N.J., made a 5.507-second run at 255.77 mph.

Manzo's 5.523-second, 262.59 mph run was enough to put him ahead of No. 2 qualifier Bob Tasca III, Craonston, R.I. Tasca ran 5.552 seconds at 258.52 mph.

Tim Freeman, Roan Mountain, Va., is the No. 1 qualifier in Comp Eliminator, Joseph Franco III, Babylon, N.Y., took over the top spot in Super Stock, and Bridgeton, N.C., racer Bud Rowe set the pace in Stock Eliminator. Chris Rini, Holmes, N.Y., is the best qualifier in Top Sportsman and Angie Travis, Conover, N.C., is in the top spot in Top Dragster.

The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series continues Sunday at Virginia Motorsports Park. DINWIDDIE, Va. -- The first rounds of qualifying at North-South Full Throttle Shootout, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, were delayed by rain for a few hours but racing got underway just after noon. In Top Alcohol Dragster, John Finke is the No. 1 qualifier. Officials opted to pull the plug on racing with about five cars left in the staging lanes and those cars will get a final qualifying shot on Saturday. However, Frank Manzo is currently in the top spot.
Finke, of Selkirk, N.Y., out ran the field by nearly two-tenths of a second with a 5.375-second pass, at 269.51 mph. The No. 2 qualifier, Dave DeAngelis, Middlesex, N.J., ran 5.507 seconds at 255.77. Finke will face the eighth-place qualifier Rich McPhillips, Phoenixville, Pa., in the first round of eliminations.

Manzo, a Morganville, N.J., resident made a 5.523 second, 262.59 mph run to take the top spot. Bob Tasca III, Cranston, R.I., is in the No. 2 spot with a 5.552 second, 258.52 mph run.

Top qualifiers in other classes include Tim Freeman, Roan Mtn., Tenn., in Comp Eliminator; Bo Kenney, Manassas, Va., in Super Stock; Bud Rowe, Bridgeton, N.C., in Stock Eliminator; Chris Rini, Holmes, N.Y., in Top Sportsman; and Angie Travis, Conover, N.C., in Top Dragster.

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Virginia Motorsports Park. Gates open at 8 a.m. and final qualifying and time trials are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. All classes are slated to run one round of eliminations following qualifying. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run all three rounds of eliminations.
