ORLANDO, Fla. -- Comp Eliminator racer Gary Merrick
and Super Stock driver Jim Harrington scored wins in their respective
categories at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Orlando
Speed World Dragway. Super Stock driver Harrington of Carrboro, N.C., took the win in his '87 Camaro with a pass of 9.976 seconds at 124.42 mph. Harrington took the win over Emory Pierpont of Cartersville, Ga., who ran 10.560 seconds at 125.90 mph in his '95 Achieva. Lee Zane of Perry Hall, Md., found the winner's circle in Stock Eliminator with a run of 11.883 seconds at 103.14 mph defeating Matt Antrobius of Bellbrook, Ohio, who made a pass of 11.704 seconds at 112.10 mph. In Super Comp, Steve Deatherage of Rockledge, Fla., led the field with a time of 11.559 seconds at 89.68 mph while, runner-up Troy Williams Jr. of Bradenton, Fla., fouled at the start. Super Gas racer Wayne Bogle of Cocoa, Fla., drove his '57 Bel Air for a pass of 9.956 seconds at 142.24 mph to earn the win over Jon Joiner Jr., also of Cocoa, Fla., who drove a '81 Camaro for a pass of 9.910 seconds at 154.32 mph. In other categories, Super Street driver Lynn Hoosigian of Newington, Conn., ran a time of 10.878 seconds at 139.53 mph defeating Ed Wiley of Brooksville, Fla., who ran 10.858 seconds 141.91 mph. John Coughlin of Delaware, Ohio, took the win in Top Dragster with a pass of 7.287 seconds at 189.27 mph while, the Top Sportsman winner was Mike Forsythe of Orange Park, Fla., who ran 7.312 seconds at 177.79 mph in a '63 Corvette. The next stop for Southeast Division racers on the Lucas Oil Drag Racing series is South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, Ga., April 13 - 15. Eliminator driver Glen Treadwell and Super Stock racer Bob Dennis
will enter eliminations in the first position. Dennis of Shorter, Ala., ran a pass of 10.411 seconds to lead the field in Super Stock driving a '95 Achieva. Jerry Silveus qualified in the No. 2 position driving a '05 Cavalier and making a pass of 9.370 seconds. Stock Eliminator driver, Bruce Noland of Lessburg, Va., qualified in the top spot with a time of 11.108 seconds, while Bill Hawk of Manassas, Va., found the second position running a pass of 10.234 seconds. Ronnie Davis of Suwanee, Ga., led the field in Top Sportsman with a pass of 6.704 seconds at 210.67 mph. Robert Davis of Boca Raton, Fla., driving a '63 Corvette found the second spot with a time of 6.849 seconds at 205.57 mph. In Top Dragster, Matt Gilmore of Altamonte Springs, Fla., took the first position driving a '32 Bantam and making a pass of 6.470 seconds at 210.47 mph. Qualifying in the second position was Jeffy Duke Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., making a pass of 6.818 seconds at 196.20 mph. Racing continues on Sunday with gates opening at 8:00 a.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and children under 12 are free with a paid adult. SUPER STOCK STOCK ELIMINATOR TOP SPORTSMAN
Ronnie Davis of Sugar Hill, Ga., has set out to defend his Top Sportsman title and comes into Orlando in second place in the point standings. Jeffery Barker of Warner-Robins, Ga., is leading the points on the strength of a win in Gainesville. Orlando's Michael Ruff, the division's defending Super Street champion, is competing in the Super Gas category. Reigning division Super Comp champ, Jeff Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., is fifth in the standings, 21 points behind the leader, Scot Lamar of Hawthorne, Fla. Racing starts with qualifying and time trials on Friday and Saturday and ends Sunday with eliminations. Gates at Speed World Dragway open at 9 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. Qualifying and time trials begin Friday at 10 a.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Dragster competitors will qualify at 4 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 5 p.m. Saturday. Comp Eliminator will have qualifying sessions at 4:30 p.m. Friday and at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Top Sportsman racers will also have one qualifying run on Friday, at 5 p.m., and two on Saturday, at 3 and 6 p.m. Eliminations are slated to start Sunday at 9 a.m. Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $20 Friday, $25 Saturday and $25 Sunday. The 2007 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2007 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only. The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event. Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2007 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled. IN-MOTION SATELLITES TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the $3,500 purse. Top Sportsman racers may run the seven Southeast Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in either the North Central or South Central Divisions.
