Steve Torrence in Top Alcohol Dragster and defending Top Alcohol Funny Car South Central division Champion Jackie Stidham took home wins at this weekend’s TCI Sportsman Challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Torrence, of Kilgore, Texas, recorded the low elapsed time of the event in the final round with a 5.433 second pass at 259.91 mph to defeat veteran racer Gene Snow. Snow, who defeated Torrence last month at Red River Raceway, took out national points leader Ashley Force in round one before going down to Torrence in the Final.

Stidham grabbed his second win of the season with a run of 5.829 seconds at 245.67 mph over division point’s leader Jimmy Jones. The Chickasha, Okla., racer scored his first win of the season last month at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kan.

Home town favorite George Cox of Memphis, Tenn., held off Steven Hall for the win in Stock Eliminator. Cox ran his ’97 Trans Am to a winning run of 11.585 seconds at 110.39 mph.

Rodger Brogdon grabbed the win in Comp Eliminator over Scott Cashio with a run of 7.948 seconds at 167.01 mph while Jeremy Duncan won in Super Stock over Dan Carter
Tommy Phillips nearly doubled up on in the winner’s circle taking home the win on Super Comp then taking a runner-up finish to Super Gar winner Jesse Serna of El Paso, Texas.

Other racers joining in on the winner’s circle celebration were Glenn Knapp in Super Street; Rich Gentili over Craig Treble in Sportsman Motorcycle; Bert Prejean of St. Amant, La., in the Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman class; and Jeff Pitman in the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster category.
The South Central Division racers head to Cherokee County Motorsports Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event next week, June 10-12

In the first rounds of qualifying at Memphis Motorsports Park for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series TCI Sportsman Challenge, James Thompson and Jackie Stidham grabbed the top qualifying spots in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car.
Thompson, out of Vernon, Texas, clocked in at 5.467 seconds at 259.66 mph to lead the dragster field by a hundredth of a second over Steve Torrence in the No. 2 spot with a 5.476 second, 260.51 mph run.

National point's leader Ashley Force is currently fifth with a 5.687 second lap at 254.14 mph.

Defending South Central division Champion Stidham raced to a 5.889 second pass in his '00 Camaro at 244.69 mph and is followed by fellow Oklahoma racer Brandon Lewis in second with a 5.960 second run at 248.43 mph. Jimmy Jones, who has taken wins at the last two South Central division events, is third at 5.960, 239.31.

Rodger Brogdon, also looking to defend his division championship from 2004, is qualified No. 1 in Comp Eliminator with a 7.942 second pass in his '04 Cavalier. Brogdon is followed by Harvey, La., racer Del Segura with an 8.158 second run.

Super Stock racer Robin Brown used a 10.217 second lap to take the No. 1 position while Jerry Bennett landed on top in Stock Eliminator with a run of 11.294 seconds, 1.156 seconds under the index.

Top qualifiers in other classes were Henry Keele of San Antonio, Texas in Sportsman Motorcycle; Keith Raftery of Lake Charles, La., in the Sunset Racing Engines Top Sportsman class; and Michael Kile of Westlake, La., in TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster.

Racing continues Saturday at 11 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. with final qualifying for Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car scheduled for 1 p.m. Eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster, Funny Car, and Pro Stock Bikes begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25.
