BRAINERD, Minn. -- Rain shortened the racing action at Brainerd Int'l Raceway's (BIR) NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. West Central division racers ran qualifying and time trials until the bad weather put a halt to the activities. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car racers were each scheduled to have two qualifying runs Saturday. In the end, Top Alcohol Dragsters got one pass down the track and Funny Cars did not make any runs. Qualifying is complete and eliminations will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, Bill Reichert, Owosso, Mich., overtook the No. 1 qualifying spot from David Wells of Lemars, Iowa. Reichert ran 5.403 seconds at 265.85 mph to take the lead. Wells slipped the third place behind Reichert and defending division champion Randy Meyer of Spring Hill, Kan., when it started to rain just after he made his burnout. He did not get to make a run down the track.

Top Alcohol Funny Car racers were scheduled to run after the Dragsters when the rain hit. Cy Chesterman, the reigning division and national champion in the class from Sioux City, Iowa, stays in the No. 1 spot by virtue of the 5.795-second, 248.29 mph pass he made on Friday.

Racers in the other competing classes made qualifying and time trial passes earlier in the day but all of Friday's top qualifiers kept their positions except for in Sportsman Motorcycle where Willie Braddy of Savage, Minn., overtook the lead from Keniesen of Brooklyn Park, Minn. Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., is the best qualifier in Comp Eliminator while Robert Jaspersen of Lakeville, Minn., and West Jordan Utah's, Keith Lynch are No. 1 in Super Stock and Stock Eliminator, respectively.

Racing continues Sunday at BIR. Gates open at 7 a.m. and eliminations start at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round of eliminations at noon.
