MORRISON, Colo. -- Robert Perkins in Top Alcohol
Dragster and Bernie Harrington in Top Alcohol Funny Car out ran
their fields for the wins at this weekend's Thunder on the Mountain
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event presented by Grease Monkey
at Bandimere Speedway.
Perkins, of Bluffdale, Utah, took out David Wells and Richard Putz
on his way to a final round match up with Jeff Isabell. Perkins
saved his best pass of the day for Isabell tripping the clocks at
5.730 seconds at 249.30 mph to Isabell's 5.894 second run at 241.37
mph.
In a repeat funny car final from last year's event,
Harrington faced off against Cy Chesterman hoping to turn things
around this year. He did so as both racers got out of the grove
with Harrington able to fight his '02 Camaro back into line, leaving
Chesterman behind for the win. The California racer recorded a 6.332
second run at 220.91.
Westminster, Colo., resident Clint Neff ran a 7.253
second lap at 186.20 mph for the win in Comp Eliminator over Mike
DePalma while fellow Colorado racer John Cooper grabbed the win
in Stock Eliminator. The LaPorte, Colo., resident beat Stan Kopejtka
to the line with an 11.225 second run.
The Super Stock trophy went to Abe Loewen who knocked
off Ryan Montford running 10.262 seconds at 132.78 to Montford's
10.375 at 111.80.
Ed Olpin led the super index categories grabbing
the win in Super Comp over Josh O'Conner while John Steffen took
the win in Super Gas and Dan Eichem won in Super Street. Olpin ran
9.443 seconds at 160.21, winning over Josh O'Conner in a double
breakout and Steffen ran 10.551 seconds at 140.90 mph over Brett
Schneider in a battle of Littleton, Colorado racers. Eichem drove
his '69 Camaro to a pass of 11.593 at 136.032 mph over Kamie Minor.
Rounding out this weekend's winners was six-time
West Central Division Champion Brian Johnson taking home the trophy
in Sportsman Motorcycle with a run of 9.794 seconds at 127.38 mph
over Tom Gilligan with a pass of 9.958 at 129.22 mph.
The West Central Division racers head to Nebraska
Motorplex for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event,
August 5-7.

Saturday final qualifying
MORRISON, Colo. --- NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car National
Champion Cy Chesterman picked up his first win of the year in a
rain delayed final round against John Patton while also taking over
the No. 1 qualifying position for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil
Drag Racing Series event at Bandimere Speedway. Chesterman faced
off with Patton in today's final qualifying session for Bandimere's
Thunder on the Mountain event presented by Grease Monkey which was
also the funny car final of the Lucas Oil event from Brainerd International
Raceway which was rescheduled to this weekend because of rain.
Chesterman raced to a 5.973 second pass at 226.96 mph to Patton's
6.135 at 233.60 mph for the win and the No. 1 spot. Grabbing the
second and third qualifying spots in funny car were Kirk Williams
and California racer Bernie Harrington. Patton landed in the sixth
position while local racers Robert Kanenwisher of Conifer, Colo.,
and Steve Gribokski of Aurora, Colo., rounded out the field in the
seventh and eighth positions respectively.
Chris Demke swapped places with opening day low
qualifier Richard Putz to take over the No. 1 spot in Top Alcohol
Dragsters. Demke and Putz went back and forth several times during
qualifying with Demke's 5.699 second pass landing him on top while
Putz held on to the No. 2 spot with a 5.750 second run at 249.30
mph.
Clint Sallee picked up a win at the West Central
Division season opener last month at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip and sits
on top of the Comp Eliminator field going into tomorrow's eliminations
with a run of 7.150 seconds, 0.670 seconds under the index. Roy
Whittmore in Super Stock and Keith Lynch in Stock qualified No.
1 in their classes and join Sallee in sharing the Aeromotive Low
Qualifier Bonus Award money.
Whittmore, of Denver, drove his '74 Mustang to a
10.629 second pass and is followed by Tim Nicholson and Morrison,
Colo., resident James Weakland in second and third. Rounding out
the top five in Stock are Brad Burton of Golden, Colo., Gary Gokey
of Denver, Bob Johnson of Aurora, Colo., and Bob Swan of Belle Fourch,
S.D.
Tom Gilligan of Freemont, Neb., is leading Sportsman
Motorcycle with Dave Shell of Dillon, Colo., in second.

MORRISON, Colo. -- In the first rounds of qualifying
at Bandimere Speedway for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder
on the Mountain presented by Grease Monkey, Top Alcohol Dragster
driver Richard Putz and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Kirk Williams
took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.
Putz, of Earlville, Iowa, outran the field with a pass of 5.768
seconds at 250.92 mph. Putz is followed by California racer Chris
Demke with a 5.775 second lap at 247.57 mph.
Glenwood, Iowa, resident Williams made a 5.990-second, 241.97 mph
run to take the pole and is followed by defending Funny Car National
Champion Cy Chesterman in second with a 6.079 second run at 242.67
mph.
Denver resident Tim Nicholson grabbed the top spot in Super Stock
in his '74 Mustang with a pass of 10.629 seconds, 1.341 seconds
under the index. The local favorite is followed by Tim Nicholson
in the No. 2 spot and Morrison, Colorado's James Weakland in 3rd
with a 10.435 second pass, 1.265 under the index.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Vinnie Deceglie in Comp Eliminator
running 7.024 seconds in his '63 Corvette and Keith Lynch in Stock
Eliminator with a 10.973 second pass. Lynch is followed by Gary
Gokey of Denver, and Bob Johnson of Aurora, Colo., in 2nd and 3rd
respectively.
Racing continues Saturday at 10 a.m. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. Tickets
are $20 on Saturday and $22 on Sunday. Children are 6-12 are $6

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point
fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2005 NHRA Lucas Oil
Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions.

Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national
champions will share a bonus of $135,000.
JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRAs
seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund
from Jegs High Performance. The 2005 Jegs Allstars event
will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each
of NHRAs Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series eight classes.
The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent
his/her division at the 2005 Jegs Allstars. Points are based
on in-division races only.
The winning divisions team will share $20,000 and individual
awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol
Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and
Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and
Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000
apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a
$20,000 towing fund to get to the event.
This year, event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, has offered
a double up bonus to Allstars competitors. Winners in
each individual class who go on to win the national event will have
their Allstars prize money doubled.
