Top Dragster was survival of the fittest much like all of the sportsman
classes , and when elimination's finally got started two of the qualifiers
had had enough of the wait and the mud and weather. They packed up and
left giving their competitors single into the 1/4 finals. As well #1
qualifier Daniel Fjeldahl had an odd car bye run. In the 1/4's Delta
B.C.'s John Evans gave away his chance for a third round bye into the
finals when he left before the tree was activated, giving Bruno Massel
an easy victory. Slate Cummings defeated Jim Attewell and Albertan Mark
Campbell defeated Daniel Fjeldahl. In the semis Massel got the freebie
to the final round and Slate Cummings took the .007 stripe in a very
close race against Mark Campbell. Two IHRA regulars faced off in the
final round and Cummings got the win when Massel red lit in the final
round.

Top Sportsman was not any better in the attrition rate, as three of
the doorslammers left before elimination's. Bob Marshall, "Best
Engineered" Duane Grosart in his 55 Chevy and Keith Korecki all
escaped the mud and further delays before the 8:19 pm start of elimination's.
I don't blame them one bit! In round one #1 Wayne Hofer defeated Rob
Murphy in his cool 57 Pick-up, Gary Gummow defeated hitter Bruno Massel,
Dale Bristow got by last years winner Dale Giroux, Ricky Adkins defeated
a red lighting John Genovese, Perry Thyr defeated a a red lighting Pat
McNally, Randal Olynyk took out John Childs and Doug Hesch had an easy
single round win over one of the no shows. He got another freebie just
after midnight when Olynyk did not show, Adkins got the win over Thyr,
Bristow got a single one his side of the ladder with the first round
no shows, and Hofer took the cool Chevy II to the semis win a win over
Bristow. The semi finals were run on Monday morning (like the enter
class should have been), and Bristow got his second single in a row
when Hofer failed to return, and Adkins defeated Hesch when Doug lit
the red light. The final was over at the tree with a red light by Dale
Bristow. This class along with all the sportsman classes was a test
of patience more than anything and the out of town regulars certainly
had the advantage because they were not expected to be at work Monday
morning and alot of the locals and ones within a day or less driving
distance had very tough choices to make. Safety was one of the major
factors in this deal, and I applaud all that decided to make a difficult
decision and not play on Sunday night. I hope better options are put
forth by the officials next year if in fact the racers return to even
make these two classes worth racing in!

Jr. Dragster/Funny Car
The Jrs. deserve an Iron Man each as only one Jr. entered did not compete
in round one. All stayed around for their second, third, and fourth
round which was complete after 2:00 am. What a deal, and kudos to their
Mom's and Dad's for their dedication to the kids.
