In Pro Stock: This class should be as much about the golden boys that decided they don't need to support the program here in Edmonton as it is about the race. Only eleven cars are at Bud Park, meaning around 9 regulars decided they don't need no stinking race in the North West. Shame on them all! Names like Brian Gahm, John Nobile, Doug Kirk and Richard Penland are among the top 15 in the standings that did not feel the importance of attending. I hope it costs them substantial spots in the standings. Canadians Larry O'Brien and John Konigshofer did make the trek either.

But what cars did show up performed to expectations and greatly exceeded them.

First round of qualifying Friday afternoon, five Pro Stock cars had run quicker than the old track record of 6.575 set by John Montecalvo in 2004. He was half of the first pairing out in round one and shattered his old mark with a 6.537 212 shot. That number did not last though, as Frank Gugliotta was .007 quicker and broke both ends with a 6.530/214.01 mph run. The first round ended with 7 of the eleven cars running in the 6.50's.

By the end of the weekend, nine cars had got quicker than the old track record of 6.575.

Here are the pairings for round one. #1 Robert Patrick bye, #2 Frank Gugliotta vs #11 Elijah Morton, #3 Tony Gillig Vs #10 Chuck DeMory, #4 John Montecalvo Vs #9 Rick Jones, #5 Steve Spiess Vs #8 Jerry Haas, #6 Daniel Seamons Vs #7 Pete Berner.

In round one, Patrick improved his track record with an even quicker, 6.488/212.96 on his first round bye. Daniel Seamon had an easy one when Berner shook and lifted early coasting down track. Tony Gillig also had an easy one when Chuck DeMory had an oil leak in the water box. John Montecalvo defeated Rick Jones on both ends of the track with a 6.539 - 6.568, Frank Gugliotta had a freebie when Elijah Morton red lit and Steve Spiess got the same break when Jerry Haas red lit. Spiess lowered his weekend best with a 6.511.

(L) Jerry Haas (Dean's Casing Service Cavalier) -0.095(R) 6.543 212.29

In round two, Patrick ran low et of the round with a 6.511 to 6.543 victory over Seamon, Gillig won a close one (.012) over a quicker leaving Montecalvo 6.520 - 6.552, and in another tight one Gugliotta used his .021 rt advantage to defeat Spiess 6.519 - 6.508 (.010 margin).

(W) Robert Patrick (Purvis Cobra) 0.071 6.511 212.66
(L) Daniel Seamon (Citgo Escort) 0.072 6.543 213.20
(W) Tony Gillig (ASSC Racing Mustang) 0.053 6.520 212.86 (L) John Montecalvo (Citgo Cobalt) 0.033 6.552 212.16 (W) Frank Gugliotta (Thodos Motorsports Escort) 0.032 6.519 213.23 (L) Steve Spiess (Spiess Construction Cobalt) 0.053 6.508 213.70

In the semi finals, Gugliotta got the bye run to the finals and went 6.513 in his attempt to get lane choice. Tony Gillig continued his hot streak here with a holeshot victory over Robert Patrick. Patrick's third 6.40 lap of the weekend was in vain when he was .044 behind Gillig at the tree. Tony's 6.524 was enough by .018 over Patrick's quicker 6.498, ouch!

(W) Tony Gillig (ASSC Racing Mustang) 0.032 6.524 211.93
(L) Robert Patrick (Purvis Cobra) 0.076 6.498 213.20
(W) Frank Gugliotta (Thodos Motorsports Escort) 0.047 6.513 213.13
was unopposed

The final saw a couple red Fords face-off, and both were looking for their first win of the season. Tony Gillig was a little too anxious and red lit by .007 handing the win over to Gugliotta. He was close enough in performance in the final that a .023 light would of given him the stripe. His win was the fifth different winner in the five events so far this season.

(W) Frank Gugliotta (Thodos Motorsports Escort) 0.059 6.518 214.08
(L) Tony Gillig (ASSC Racing Mustang) -0.007(R) 6.553 211.93

Hopefully, the performance levels attained here this weekend will be enough to entice the rest of the Pro Stock contingent to make the trek West for next years event.
