Two World Champions Emerge in Maryland
Millican, Castellana clinch 2005 titles at Torco President's
Cup Nationals
The job at hand was very simple for both Clay Millican and Mike
Castellana.go a couple of rounds
in Budds Creek and clinch IHRA World Championships. The Ironmen
they took home as well, just a
couple of bonuses.
Top Fuel
Millican clinched his fifth consecutive IHRA Top Fuel World Championship
when
he was able to advance to the final at the President's Cup. Heading
into the race he held a
193-point lead over second-place Doug Foley, and only had to put
a pair of round victories in
the books to close the mathematical door on Foley this season. Actually,
when Foley (Sewell,
N.J.) lost a pedal-fest in the semifinals to Bobby Lagana, Jr.,
Millican clinched the title.
Millican and Castellana joined Torco Pro Stock driver
Steve Spiess, who clinched the World
Championship in Epping, N.H. two weeks ago, in the IHRA record books.
"That was the goal, obviously, at the start of the year.to
win the championship," Millican said.
"The thing is, it takes a full year of work to do it and get
it done early before going into
Rockingham. I keep hearing the announcer, A.P. (Aaron Polburn) talking
about how we're
struggling. And I'm thinking I haven't really run that bad.yeah,
we flipped over but after that
we've been doing alright. I think we won Norwalk, I think we went
4.60 in Toronto which is the
track record.anyway, all that aside. We haven't run as quick as
we have, but Mike Kloeber took a
new approach to how he was running the car and it is absolutely
coming together."
Millican was able to defeat Lagana (Scarsdale, N.Y.) with a 4.702/312.06.
Lagana posted a 4.816
at a career-best 317.57 mph.
"It's amazing what that team can do with what it has,"
Millican said about Lagana's low-budget
Twilight Zone team. "We have a huge trailer with all kinds
of equipment and they have a little
trailer with just a car in it. But they are amazing and they're
getting closer."

Pro Mod
Castellana ended the Torco Pro Modified points race when teammate
Shannon Jenkins (who was
second 79 points behind) and Carl Spiering (third 104 points behind)
lost in the first round of
eliminations. The '05 title is Castellana's first career World Championship.
Castellana was able to win his fourth Torco Pro Mod Ironman of the
season when Mike Stawicki
broke and could not finish his pass in the final.
"This was a great weekend for us and it really says a lot about
the crew," Castellana said.
"They have been awesome this year, getting this car ready.
We've had good times and bad times
this year, but we'd always been able to pull through, get things
together and get this car down
the track."
Castellana and his crew got the car down the track Saturday night
when it was most needed. After
the first two Torco Pro Mod qualifying sessions, Castellana was
on the outside of the field. He
had to put a good number on the board to even be able to compete.
He got the job done, vaulting
into the #3 qualifying spot.
"That was the most pressure I have ever felt during my racing
career," Castellana said of his
Saturday evening run. "I was definitely nervous. We made some
changes to the car, when the car
tells you what it needs, you have to respond to it."

Championship points race with his victory in Budds Creek. Sickles
entered the event trailing Rob
Atchison by 66 points.he left Maryland trailing by just five. Sickles
defeated Chris Foster in
the final when Foster lit the red-light.
"We have ourselves a race right down to the wire," Sickles
said. "We're hoping we can do the
same thing in Rockingham now. We have a great race team and a great
sponsor. Here we are, we've

home the Torco Pro Stock
Ironman when Spiess was unable to fire his car for the final. Gahm
(Lucasville, Oh.) took the

"You hate to win that way, but this is a big relief,"
Gahm said. "It just goes to show what kind
of guys I have helping me. They never give up. We've struggled,

Pro Stock pilot Steve Bareman Dazzles the Field
Summit-sponsored Torco Pro Mod driver sets IHRA
World Record during qualifying
By Mike Perry / IHRA.com
On a day when Torco Pro Stock was showcased at the track known for
its Pro Stock excellence,
Steve Bareman stole the spotlight with a record-setting qualifying
effort.
After Bareman, from Elma, N.Y., set a provisional IHRA World elapsed
time record in Saturday
afternoon qualifying with a 6.095 the entire speedway was wondering
if he would be able to run a
6.15 Saturday evening to back up the record. Bareman not only backed
up the record, he carded a
6.050 to drop the record down even further and qualify #1 for the
first time in his career.
Bareman, who teamed up with Jim Oddy when Al Billes was unable to
continue to campaign for
Summit Racing Equipment due to medical conditions, also holds the
IHRA Torco Pro Mod speed
record, 236.46, set two weeks ago in Epping. He is pleased to now
hold both ends of the IHRA
Torco Pro Mod World Record.
"We just wanted to get it down the track," Bareman said.
"Jim makes a lot of power and we knew
if we could get it down the track we would run a good number. I didn't
think we'd run those kind
of numbers. When you are in the car and they run so smooth you really
don't know what kind of
number you are running."
Bareman took his '63 Corvette to Oddy, who was in a conundrum after
Billes suffered a pair of
accidents earlier this season and was not medically prepared to continue
this season.
"Steve has been a wonderful surprise," Oddy said. "We
didn't know what we had for a driver or
what we had for a team. We get to Norwalk, get into the show and he
puts two hundredths on
Shannon, then five hundredths on Vick, then a couple hundredths on
Halsey. That's when I knew we
had a driver. And like I explained to the guys earlier.with everything
we went through this
year, tonight made all that worth it. You have to have the downs with
the ups. We were pretty
down, now we're pretty up."
The Torco Pro Stock field was the quickest in IHRA history as the
bump spot was in the 6.40's
for the first time ever. Before the Torco President's Cup Nationals
the lowest bump spot
happened last season in Rockingham at 6.502. Larry O'Brien (Lakeshore,
Ont.) posted a 6.485 to
claim the #16 qualifying position at MIR.
Frank Gugliotta (Mt. Airy, Md.) continued his hot streak, backing
up his Ironman victory in
Epping, N.H. by qualifying in the top spot Saturday night. His 6.403/218.51
in his final shot at
the track was a touch better than Steve Spiess (Manhattan, Ill.),
whose 6.406/216.97 placed him
second.
The Funny Car World Championship race remained tight as Rob Atchison
(London, Ont.) laid down
the number early, then Jim Sickles (Caledonia, N.Y.) answered late.
Atchison entered the Torco
Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals leading the Funny Car points
race by 66 over Sickles.
Atchison held the #1 qualifying post, and the 16 points that goes
with it, with a 5.725/246.71
pass Saturday evening.
Sickles, who has won two of the last three IHRA national events, used
his last pass of
qualifying to unseat Atchison and vault into the top spot. Sickles'
5.724/247.47 set a track
Funny Car speed record and enabled him to gain one precious point
on Atchison in the points
race.
In Top Fuel Clay Millican remained poised to claim his fifth consecutive
World Championship. He entered the Torco Race Fuels President's Cup
Nationals needing to go two
rounds to clinch the '05 title. Millican laid down a 4.568 in Saturday
afternoon qualifying to
claim the top spot and held on when no one in the evening session
could better that mark.
Millican's 4.568 also established a new MIR et record.
Team Press releases
Rob Atchison
Rob Atchison aims for Presidents Cup
London, Ontario September 21, 2005 Back to Back IHRA
Funny Car Champion Rob Atchison takes the Erickson Manufacturing Pontiac
to Budds Creek and the IHRA Presidents Cup Nationals.
We stumbled a bit at Epping by overpowering the track in our
first round loss stated Atchison. We had been on a roll with
five final round appearances in a row and four victories going into
the North American Nationals so we will have to get back to the basics
and go some rounds here. The London Ontario Canada native sits on
top of the IHRA points in his quest for a third successive IHRA Funny
Car title with a 66 point lead over the ever tough New York State
native Jim Sickles with just two races left in the IHRA/Hooters Championship
Series.
In boxing they call the last few rounds the championship rounds
and this is no different with 6 rounds of qualifying and eliminations
left, stated Atchison. We won here in 2003 and 2004 so we know
how to win here and we are optimistic of a good showing here.
This is a wonderful facility and Royce Miller and his staff keep making
improvements for both the racers and fans.
The Erickson Manufacturing Pontiac has been cloned for this weekend
as eight-year-old Mickayla Worsley of Harriston Ontario races her
Soap Box Derby car custom painted her hero Rob Atchisons Pontiac.
Father Glen reports that Mickayla faithfully watches IHRA on SPEED
Channel with her dad on Saturdays and insisted on using Robs
paint scheme for her car. We have seen Rob race at Grand Bend
and he is not only a great racer but also a fantastic ambassador for
IHRA and his sponsors, stated proud dad Glen Worsley. The derby
is this Saturday in Clifford Ontario with 45-50 cars expected to compete
so Mickayla will face stiff competition. With any kind of luck Mickayla
and Rob will be in the Winners Circle this weekend
