Weekend wrap-ups

Stoken Racing

Stoken Racing, Edmonton Wrap-up
Grand Bend Preview

What a difference a year or two make in Pro Mod Drag Racing.
One of the most unlikely teams in the class is near the top of the standing in arguably the toughest Pro Mod Series in North America. IHRA Pro Mod racing the only major assoc. where Nitrous and Blown cars compete regularly against each other. And with the performance levels attained by the blown teams, racing a nitrous car, you have to have your "A" game in place on every lap. The Stoken family from Eureka Montana have their "A' game in high gear so far this season.
Without any form of sponsorship on their car except for the home grown type (IE: out of pocket racing). They had gone out and done what many teams have tried and failed in doing so. They have become competitive in a class with two different types of racecars and chose to run the type of car that is the on the low side of the parity curve. They attribute their success to two things, (1) The Speedtech nitrous Reyer/Morrison power plant, (2) and the Tim McAmis Race Car. "Tim has proven over the years that he can build a car that works right out of the box. We were competitive as soon as we took delivery of the car. It goes straight and it handles the hp and torque that the monster 780 ci in Reyer/Morrison power plant throws at it. No matter what the track and air conditions are, we always get at least two strong qualifying efforts in and that helps us out on race day". It was very evident at Edmonton for the Rocky Mountain nationals.
The Rocky's are the only IHRA race that allows four qualifiers, and that can be good or bad. If you have a couple good runs in the first three, you wish there were no more attempts, and one of the high hp blown cars may get their deal figured out. But if you are the one who struggled early you are glad for the extra hit.
"We were strong right off the bat, the car was set up perfectly, and we ran a 6.18 to sit #3. In the evening session we tried a couple absolutely new ideas, and the car responded with one of the best 60 foots of the year", according to Pat after Friday qualifying. Pat did shut off early, as the team only has one bullet for this race. The new 800-inch combo is close to being ready. "We can't wound the engine, as eliminations are where we earn the points". In the heat of the third session Saturday Afternoon, Pat ran within a hundredth of the first lap, but Brandon tuned up the top end and the car went 5 mph faster, to the tune of 227 mph. The final qualifier showed more consistency, and they ran 6.20/225. The car was obviously dialled-in for eliminations. They ended up # 7, which is one of the best qualifying positions with a sportsman ladder, as they faced off against the #15 qualifier, Harold Martin.
In round one, Pat got a huge starting line advantage and stayed within .04 of his best qualifying effort, 6.22 that put him into the ¼ finals. Going rounds is what it is all about. In Round two their opponent was points leader Scotty Cannon. This would be a real test. Usually Scotty is near the top of the qualifying ladder and it would be a later date in eliminations. But if you are going to be the point leader, you have to be able to beat the guy at the top. Scotty went uncharacteristically red (.015 red), and coasted through the top end. Pat was fairly sharp, with a .050 light but he also made his best lap of the weekend, a great 6.16/228. A 20-point gain on the point leader was just what the doctor ordered.
The semi final opponent was Ed Hoover who ran low et (6.12) of the previous round.
This one was over early, as Pat was a bit tardy (.141), and Ed was on his game (.048). Both cars basically repeated their previous round #'s with Hoover going 6.12 to Pat's 6.17. A perfect light would have been .002 too little.
"We did not win the race but we did pick up valuable points on the leader. The next couple races are expected to be on the warm muggy side, which keeps us close to the higher hp blown cars. If we can continue to go rounds in the next four races it will be one heck of a great race to the championship".
For Grand Bend, the team does not plan to try anything away from what they have done so far this year. "Why fix it, if it ain't broken". The goal is to qualify in the top half of the field, and then go rounds. We are one round back of Scotty Jr., and we know he will be wanting revenge, for us taking him out last week. Ed Hoover is also knocking on the door, as are a number of other blown teams. We are underdogs right now, and we like to be in that position. We will continue to do what we are doing and hopefully the next few events fall into place.
Pat, Casey and Cory would like to thank Tim McAmis for building such a great racecar, Reyer/Morrison for the awesome power and to Brandon and Speedtech for all their speed secrets.
See you in Grand Bend.

Gary Mason Motorsports

Gary Mason Edmonton Wrap-up

Gary Mason went into Edmonton with a few goals. To get more laps to improve as a driver, to make it from point "A" to "B" as to get more data for the tune-up and to qualify at his first ever IHRA National event.
He did all that in Spades as he not only managed to qualify for his first ever event he went out a got his first ever round win, as icing on the cake. Gary with Les Davenport in his corner, made great strides the week before at Mission Raceway and they continued to improve at Edmonton. In round one, the car left hard, but the Gary lost power just past half-track. In round two, the car made a strong full pull, and clocked in a respectable 6.33/227mph.
On Saturday Les turned up the wick a bit more and the car and Gary responded with a solid 6.26/229mph.
In the final session, the car rattled the tires hard, but did hook up for the best mph of the weekend, a 230 mph lap that included a 6.34 et. Gary qualified for the field in the #14 spot. His first round opponent would be Jim Halsey.
Sunday morning was much cooler than on Saturday, so it would be a different set-up for eliminations. All I had to do was get off the starting line and hit my shift points, stated Gary prior to round one.
Gary did an adequate job on the starting, but nothing to write home about (.121), while Halsey was .054 better. Gary played catch-up all the way down track and at 1250 feet he caught Halsey and took a .003 margin of Victory. His 6.241/230.02 shot (a weekend best) just got by Halsey's 6.298/225 mph effort. "That was close", Gary stated when he got back to the pit area. "The team did their job and I was plain lucky. I have to be better on the tree".
In the ¼ finals, he would take on the 'Big Dog', Carl Spiering. Gary was much better on the tree, with a .087 light, but unfortunately the car went into severe tire shake, and Gary had to work hard to keep the car in his lane. Gary coasted to the finish line as the r/u with a 11 second et.
"We had to hop up the car with a match-up against Spiering, but we missed by just a bit. Overall I am ecstatic with the weekend, as we exceeded the goals we set for the weekend. The more laps we make, the better the whole crew including the driver becomes". Gary wants to thank Les Davenport for his expertise and Quain Stott for his input. His hard working crew, including Scott Marter, Shawn Bosse and Bob Demers deserve as much credit as anyone.
"We are looking forward to the rest of the year. The next event is this coming weekend in Calgary, and I hope we can match the success we have had already".

Road Hammers Racing Alcohol Funny Car team

Weekend wrap-up.

Edmonton's Road Hammers Racing team competed at their second Rocky Mountain Nationals this past weekend. Owner/Driver Cal Tebb was looking for career bests more so than making what ended up being a very tough 6.0 field
Tebb ripped off a respectable 6.28 in the opening session. In round two they got a bit more aggressive on the starting line and the car responded to improve by .07 to a 6.21@222mph. "The car basically responded to our more aggressive tune-up, we were just hoping for another half tenth or so". In round three on Saturday, Cal got after the clutch a bit more but tire shake caused the parachutes to pop out right on the starting line. Not quite what the team was expecting. It was more of a parachute assembly issue that the shake. "I changed the mounts on the car and did not have them adjusted properly", stated Cal after the run.
The team fixed the problem with the chutes, and tuned up the car for the final qualifier. It was a bit too aggressive and the Firebird launched into sever tire shake and Cal was forced to click it off early. A seven second et was what lit up on the scoreboard.
While the team was disappointed they did not qualify, they were happy to improve from their prior Edmonton best, a 6.40. Next weekend, Cal travels to Mission for the Top Alcohol Shoot-out. It was there last year, that the team set their personal best, a 6.17@228mph.
A 6.0 would be a great number for us this coming weekend, and we will try hard to accomplish their goal. Call wants to thank team sponsors Canpo Electric, Boychuk Ventures, Trail Tire, Homestyle Construction, HDF Insurance, The Wild West Saloon, Les Co. Distribution (Lucas Oil) and Bel Engine Services.
Cal would also like to thank all the crew for their hard this weekend. The team includes Anne Lamers, Dave Palmer, Norm Kolowich and Roger Walsh and Gary and Catherine Battle.

Sitko Family racing

The Sitko Family Alcohol Funny Car team struggled this past weekend at Edmonton's 'Rocky Mountain Nationals. With only one lap half under their belt so far this season, data was going to have to come from past experience. Having a new body (a Firebird instead of the older Daytona) would be a bit of a challenge and not having any full laps this season basically forced the team to start from scratch.
The car went up in smoke on the first run. We were too aggressive for the hot conditions and the car smoked the tires like a fuel car.
Ken softened the car off the starting line in round two, but it was too much. Nathan did get a full lap in, but the scoreboard read only a 6.37 at 216 mph.
"We were hoping for a low 6.20 pass, and were very surprised that only a 6.37 came up".
Ken made wholesale changes to the tune-up for round three but basically the same et came up on the board (6.33). The car ran the same but the computer said we were way to lean even though it was not set up that way.
"We made a few fuel and clutch adjustments in hopes that the car would make a big move from their previous two laps".
The car left harder but the start did not transfer to an improvement in their previous efforts. The second 6.33 in a row came up on the scoreboard.
The car made three out of four consistent runs, but they were a couple tenths slower than we were hoping for. The track was absolutely awesome and we could not get the right amount of power to the sticky racing surface.
The next couple events for the team are on tracks where traction is not any where near the level of Castrol Raceway. Their numbers from this past weekend are basically what they need to run at the marginal tracks.
The rest of the season will be more fun events, with much less pressure on the team. They can test ideas and hopefully get a handle on what the new car likes and doesn't like.
The Sitko's would like to thank the crew for all their hard work this weekend
Team Sponsors:
Western Camp Services and Paradise RV, Campbell Automotive, Commercial Solutions, Boychuk Trucking, Les Co Distributing (Lucas Oil), and Fairmont Electroplating.

"Trial and Error" Nitro Funny Car weekend wrap-up

Jason Duchene and the Trial and Error" Top Fuel Funny Car team did not have the weekend they were hoping for this past weekend at Edmonton's Rocky Mountain Nationals.
The Castrol/Finning backed team has significant promise after a very strong first 200 feet Friday night. It was second quick for 60 feet and then blew the tires off at 200 feet. They went back to the pits and softened to new five-disc clutch up to get through the first 300 feet and then have the tune-up work its way through to a low to mid five second et.
The car launch hard in the second qualifier, but moved hard to the guard rail, Jason Pedalled the car but it shook real hard and he was forced to lifted at 200 feet.
In round three the goal again was an easy five second lap, But the car hard the clutch lock up early and Jason smoked the tried at 60 feet. Jason tried to pedal the car to get it to settle down, but the big slicks blazed into tire smoke again. He coasted through with a 9 second et.
"We are still learning this deal, and we did get a lot of data, in which to tune from. We will go into our next event at the "Hot August Night" event here at Castrol Raceway with more information and confidence".
Jason would like to thank the crew for all their hard work this weekend, and also thanks his awesome sponsors including Castrol Canada, Finning, Sealy Mattresses Canada, William Huff Advertising, and Savage Metal Works.

Prairie Land Racing
They lost the battle but they did win the war in the end

Kevin Therres and the Prairie Land Racing team did not have the weekend they were hoping at the CARS RV and Marine Rocky Mountain Nationals this past weekend.

After a strong performance last season, they were confident they could match or improve on their top eight qualifying effort.
But this is Drag Racing and the saying you can go from "hero to zero in six seconds" could not be more fitting.
On Friday they went out trying to run a low six second et, as they were confident that the hotter weather this year would not net an all five-second field.
About 200 feet into their run, they blew out they burst panel sending the hood hatch sailing into the air. Back at the pits they could not find anything that would have caused the bang, so they just added a bit more fuel to the tune-up and went out for round two. Unfortunately the same thing happened at almost the exact same time.
Back to the drawing board. They made many adjustments including ignition and adding more fuel, as they could not see any plugged nozzles or anything that would cause the lean condition.
Round three of qualifying on Saturday was next and off the car went.
But to the teams amazement they panel blew again 200 feet into the run. There did not deem to be a logical answer, so they decided to make a complete engine change to their ride.
After a two-hour thrash they were set and ready, for the final qualifier. The goal was not really even to run quick enough to qualify for what was a 6.07 bump. They want to go 1320 feet without hearing a big bang.
They entire team held their breath for the first 250 feet and, all was good. 600 feet still good. For 6.33 second it was like a huge victory, ad the car made it through the full ¼ mile.
To see the sighs of relief on the team's faces was a great feeling.
"Ya, we did not qualify, and no we did not solve the issues through the weekend. We will go back to the shop, and go through everything with a fine toothcomb. We will find the problem and get it fixed before the next event at Calgary".

Kevin wants to really applaud the team for their hard work through a very tough weekend. Shane, Mark, Jordan and Colby worked their butts off and I am very proud of all of them. Wife Gwen was there every step of the way as well.

Kevin also thanks all the sponsors including Mac Tools, Jillian Builders, NUSCO, Allied Auto Distributors, Mopac Auto Supply, Ralph's Diesel Repairs, Pennzoil, Milligan Bio-Tech, KMK Sales and TJ Electric. Next up is a huge display at the Calgary Stampede with the team Jet Funny Car and then events with both racecars. Their Drug Awareness program kicks back into high gear in another month and the teams goals are just as important away from the track as on the ¼ mile.

Hi-Velocity Racing

Hi Velocity Systems Racing Nitro Funny Car team
Rocky Mountain Nationals weekend wrap-up

Highs and lows sum up the first ever IHRA event weekend for the Hi- Velocity Nitro Funny Car team.
The team was ecstatic to qualify at their first ever event, and they knew it would be tough to advance over a veteran driver like Terry Haddock. Haddock was a top six driver who has run many 4 second ets in the series. So they wanted to be ready and have a tune-up that would have been solid enough, so if Haddock faltered, they would be right there.
Sunday morning the team discovered a supercharger issue, and scrambled to get a replacement from another team. They got one from their opponent Terry Haddock. Team owner Leon Prevost thanked Haddock by sponsoring the team the rest of the weekend. The team thrashed hard to get the car ready for round one, and they were set, but there were fuel system issues due to the different manifold and block configuration. The plan was to go up and do the normal burnout and stage the car, and hope for Haddock to falter. They did the burnout but unfortunately the car did not sound right and the fuel system was off. Crew Chief Neil Fedderly signalled driver Randy Bykowsky to shut the car off, and just as he was going to shut off the fuel, the car revved up a bit and lurched forward. Neil jumped back and Randy did get the car shut off.
"The issue was obviously due to the different blower and manifold set-up and we just did not have enough time to work through it before round one. We do want to thank Haddock for helping us out, and we congratulate him of getting his first ever national event win", stated driver Bykowsky.
Randy wants to thank all the crew for their hard work this weekend and he reiterates his gratitude to car owner Leon for giving him the opportunity to live out his dream. Jason would like to thank the crew for all their hard work this weekend, and also thanks his awesome sponsors including Castrol Canada, Finning, Sealy Mattresses Canada, William Huff Advertising, and Savage Metal Works.
The next event for the team is in a month at the "Hot August Night" event right here at Castrol Raceway.

Hi-Velocity Racing

Hi Velocity Systems Racing Nitro Funny Car team
Rocky Mountain Nationals pre race and Qualifying news release

One of two Nitro Funny Car teams out of the hot bed (Edmonton) for drag racing in Western Canada, is the Leon Prevost owned High Velocity "Energy Saving Products" Nitro Flopper.
A relatively new team in the Nitro ranks, the car is making its National event debut this weekend here at their home track, Castrol Raceway and the Cars RV and Marine, "Rocky Mountain Nationals.
Driver Randy Bykowsky just got his IHRA license completed last weekend here at Edmonton going 5.62@263mph. It was a long process but one that was worth it if you ask Randy. "I am living a dream, racing in a national event in front of 40,000 spectators", he stated when interviewed after his #8 qualifying 5.98@237mph.run Friday night. "Having Leon allow me to race a nitro coupe is almost beyond belief", and having our first lap almost a full pull is a bonus.
Leon bought his first car back in 2002 and over the next year and a half they put the deal together and basically got their feet wet. In 2004 Randy got his Match race exhibition license and they matched race locally against Jason Duchene on a regular basis. They also competed at Spokane Raceway for the AHRA world Finals. It was a lot of fun but all it did was perk our interest even more, and made owner Prevost see the need for more current equipment. Crew Chief on the car, Niel Fedderly, is the nephew of legendary crew chief Bernie Fedderly and that gave the team an advantage over most other teams sourcing Fuel Funny Car parts. With that advantage, Niel and Leon took the next big step and convinced the Force camp to sell them one of their chassis' (Steve Plueger built) and basically a complete Force drive train including their own in house heads, blower and other components exclusive to John Force Racing. They picked up a 2006 Monte Carlo body as the Force Mustangs are never for sale. Leon and Randy want to single out Robert Hight and Bernie Fedderly for all their help. Randy was at last year's Rocky Mountain Nationals event trying to complete his license but he fell just short. He finished the process two weeks ago and was ready to play in front of 40,000 spectators. In Friday's evening session the team was both jacked and nervous. Randy was the first car out and he went out and ran a soft but safe 5.98@ 237 mph. It put him in the field, but they had more work to do. No one thought that run would hold up after Saturday's two laps, but this is nitro funny car racing, and low and behold the run did stand, and the team was going to their first eliminations at their first ever race.
Randy would like to thank Leon for giving him the opportunity to live out his dream, and he would like to thank his wife Pamela for saying yes to his addiction.
The hard working crew on the team include Leon (owner), Niel (CC), Randy (driver), Pam (team leader) all mentioned above and Tim Prevost, Colton Bykowsky, Jeff Fougere, and Jordan Tomnuk. The team has a great bunch of sponsors and could not have made it where they are this weekend without them. They include Hi-Velocity Systems, Energy Savings Products Ltd., Techniflex, Autolite, Fabco and the powder station.

Jason Duchene Racing (Nitro Funny Car)

One of the dreams of any Young drag racing fans that has seen heard, seen and smelled the nitro and then got to watch a Funny Car go down the track. Is to one day being able to get in one of those bad boys and go down the ¼ mile.
For Edmonton's Jason Duchene, he is living that dream. He may not have been in the '4's' yet or ripped off a 300 mph lap, but that could come soon.
Entering his second race in the Nitro Funny Car class here this weekend at the Rocky Mountain Nationals, the team is on the verge of setting new personal bests and perhaps improving on his 5.60/278 mph personal bests. "With 10 or 11 Funny Cars entered there will be a legitimate bump spot, possibly in the 5.20 range, so we have to be on the ball if we want to race on Sunday.
Jason has been in the class for 10 years, starting off with the most basic Nitro Funny Car combination. He has spent all those years running up here at Edmonton, match racing and learning every thing about the class. Every year the team acquires more current and technologically advanced parts in hopes of putting together a car that will be Western Canada's first 4-second 300 mph nitro coupe.

The team has strong financial support from Castrol Canada and Finning, and Jason wants to perform well for his two major sponsors.

The car is a Victory Chassis, previously owned by Chuck Etchells, a 2003 Chevy Camaro and a 500 cu in BAE Hemi. The clutch tune-up is the most difficult aspect of getting these cars from point 'A' to 'B'. We've got a new five-disc clutch this year, and it is a real learning curve. Add in a better blower as well, and we are definitely getting serious about the class. Bobby Lagana Jr. has been a real help this weekend as well as Jack Wyatt.
One Friday during session under "Nitro Jam", the team run had real promise for 250 feet. "We had the second quickest 60-foot of round one (.923), but unfortunately at 250 feet, we shook and smoked the tires. We will go out and change the clutch tune-up for round two of qualifying and hope the car responds the way it should".

While the team would obviously love to do this full time and race against the likes of John Force and Ron Capps, they know the reality of Funny Car racing and are happy to be involved in a sport that started as a hobby and "Just got out of Control".
Jason would like to mention the support he also gets from associate sponsors Sealy Mattresses Canada, William Huff Advertising, and Savage Metal Works. His crew includes Rick Statt, Rick Duchene, James Savage, Steve Murray, Jason Debree, and Ken Lisak.

Sitko Family racing

The first major outing of the year is up this weekend for Ken and Nathan Sitko and the Sitko Family Racing Alcohol Funny Car team. The Rocky Mountain Nationals at their home track in Edmonton Alberta is obviously THE event of the season. The team will be a little behind the 8-ball so to speak though as they only had one earlier prior test session that got weathered out back in May. The team abandoned their old Daytona body (finally) and put on the Firebird they had in the shop. That along will get the car a lot more aerodynamics and hopefully put them in the field on Sunday. It would be easy though as the field here includes at least five regular top running IHRA teams. Add that in with a number of strong West coast floppers and you potentially have an all "5" second field. It will likely take a first ever "five" second et for Nathan to be in the field on Sunday. But this is drag racing and you never now what the number will be until the final session on Saturday evening during the "NITRO JAM".
The road to Edmonton has been a very tough one this season and the team was even unsure they could make the race. Shortly after last year's event Kenny suffered a major health scare that took close to two months to diagnose and then another five to six months to make a full recovery. The other issue was team funding for the 2007 season.
Prior to installing the new body they had to do a bunch of prep work to it, and then they hunted funding for the season. "It is not easy to run one of these beasts", stated Kenny Sitko. "We are just a small funded team and sponsorship is critical to our success in getting out on the track. The last three weeks, Western Camp Services and Paradise RV came on board as major sponsors and that put us in the position to play with the big boys, and for that we are very grateful". Add the two major sponsors to go along with long time associates Campbell Automotive, Commercial Solutions, Boychuk Trucking, Les Co Distributing (Lucas Oil), and Fairmont Electroplating. Ken and Nathan's crew this weekend include: Irene, Shane Lawrence, Chris, Lenard, Zane, Carla and Britanny. Ken's Father and North West Legend George is always a key member of the team as he built most of the parts and piece that require special fabrication on the car.

Prairieland Motorsports

Kevin Therres and the Prairie Motorsports Alcohol Funny Car have a new look for the 2007 season. Gone is the bright Yellow paint, as a new gorgeous metallic Blue paint job adorns the Dodge Avenger.
At last year's event here at Edmonton the team ran in the "5's" and made the field. A weekend best of 5.993/232 mph put him in the # 8 spot.
This year the team feels that qualifying will be just as tough and maybe even tougher so getting out and putting down a solid number early will allow the team to get more aggressive in the later runs.
The race is a good test on how the local teams matches up against the top hitters in the IHRA. "We are always comparing our performances to the competition, and if we can be close to the full time racers, is shows what hard work can accomplish"
The team is one of the few out there still running the Alan Johnson Hemi combination, and every improvement comes from the hard work of what is possibly the youngest crew in Alcohol Funny Car ranks. The average age is just over 20, if you take out the old man of the team Car owner "Kevin". "Ya I kind of bring the mean average age of the team up to the thirty range, but they never include me anyway", joke Kevin when he was giving the accolades to the rest of the crew. His son Shane is the crew chief and he just hit the ¼ century mark. Clutch guy Mark, Engine Specialist Jordan and gopher Colby round out the rest of the guys. Wife Gwen is possibly the most important member of the team though as she is the one who actually lets the guys go racing.
Acceleration Enterprises out of Calgary does help out with the fuel end of the tuning curve. He car has gone low 5.90's with the roots blower combination.
Beside running the Alcohol Funny Car the team also has a Jet Funny Car and they race all over the West matching that car. The teams mission statement since the early '90's has always been "Don't do Drugs". They set up displays at car and charity events throughout their home province of Humboldt Saskatchewan, and schools are on the top of the list for getting the word out. Over 6500 kids got the message last year, and if the message even sinks in to one child or adult then the effort is worth it.
The team is actively looking for a sponsor so they can (to use the catch phrase), " take it to the next level".

Kevin would like to thank all the sponsors for their support to the team, and that list includes, Mac Tools, Jillian Builders, NUSCO, Allied Auto Distributors, Mopac Auto Supply, Ralph's Diesel Repairs, Pennzoil, Milligan Bio-Tech, KMK Sales and TJ Electric

Stoken Racing

"Walk Softly and Carry a Big Stick" is a good 'moto' for the Eureka Montana based Pro Mod team owned by the Stoken Family.
This weekend here at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton Alberta they hope the hot weather and the high altitude will play into their favor, as they look to close the gap on point leader Scotty Cannon Jr.
A long time runner on the West Coast and current West Coast Pro Mod Nitrous record holder, the Stoken's stepped up big time last season with the addition of a new Tim McAmis built 67 Camaro. They ran real well in 2006 with the new car, but this season with a huge engine combo change, both in size and in builder has paid dividends.
The team is not one that looks for the limelight or attention, they prefer to let their actions do the talking, and this year their actions are giving notice.

They are the third car in the Awesome Motorsport team (but really are independent as the team is completely self funded) and right now the #3 car is THE 'baddest' Nitrous car in the IHRA. They currently are sitting in second place in the standings after their first ever win two weeks ago at Tulsa Oklahoma, a semi final finish at San Antonio and a second round finish at Rockingham put to leading nitrous Pro Mod in a great situation heading into the hot weather races in the IHRA. The new Engine in the car is a Reyer-Morrison mammoth 780 cu. in power-plant with a SpeedTech Nitrous system forcing the NO2 gas into the monster heads. It was a huge jump for last years 737 cubic inch engines, and they are right around the corner from debuting a 800 inch best. " The bigger engines have performed way better than originally thought", according to driver/owner Pat, "as the cars are more consistent and they are charging harder on the top end. We are really excitied to see what will happen with the new inches".
To compete against the Blown teams our (the nitrous) cars were on the ragged edge and had their tongues hanging way out on the top end. I feel right now the next few races should be slightly in our favor (the nitrous cars), and we have to take advantage of the opportunity. The blown cars seem to be able to find more HP almost at will, so every possible edge we can find will be utilized. Pat's career best is a 6.14, and he feels they could reset that mark in one of the two evening sessions. The crew on the team consists of son's Cory and Casey with wife Terrie looking after all the pit necessities. Cory's Wife Sarah is usually helping out as well, and is the daughter of Oregon Pro Mod driver Lee Smith.

The Stoken's would like to thank SpeedTech's Brandon Switzer for all the tuning help and to the Awesome Motorsports team for their assistance.
GO to dragracecentral.com and speedzonemagazine.com for all the action this weekend.

Gary Mason Racing

The new Pro Mod Kid on the block is really not new at all, as the Calgary based owner/driver has been around and involved in the sport for decades. What he has done is
get into one of the toughest classes in drag racing with the right attitude. He went out a bought a proven car, the past championship car owned by Mitch Stott, and he put together a solid engine program including a Brad Anderson Hemi put together and tuned by Les Davenport. It paid dividends right off the bat, as at the first race after licensing was complete, Gary went out and ran a great 6.26 at over 230 mph. On the next lap, Gary rolled the beams, in what have been a 'teen' pass.
. "Ya, the driver is still learning, and he is the biggest handicap on the team, stated driver/owner Mason.
This weekend is still just a learning weekend for Gary, but he knows he will get a car that is ready to run a good number if he can do the job. Calling Alberta home, makes this event on the IHRA series the most important event on his 2007 schedule.
With close to 2 dozen quality cars attempting to make the field this weekend here at Edmonton, Gary will have to relax and just do his job and let the crew chiefs tune the car for the high altitude Castrol Raceway.
Gary would like to thank Les Davenport and Quain Stott for their help in the last couple weeks. Quain is the defending Pro Mod champ here in the IHRA and has more laps under his belt than most drivers out there in the class. "If he can't teach me the ropes, no one can", stated Gary when he talked about his first ever IHRA National Event.
"And what can you say about Les Davenport and Acceleration Enterprises. This guy is a Alcohol powered race car magician, and his success speaks for itself".
Gary would like to thank his crew for all their help and they include, Scott Marter, Shawn Bosse and Bob Demers.

He would also like to thank sponsor JB Power Centre for their support this weekend.

Road Hammers Racing

Cal Tebb and the 'Road Hammers Racing' team takes center stage at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton this weekend. Alberta has a long history of having strong Funny Car teams, and Cal is one of the new players to the class. A long time IBAA Funny Car racer, he got the opportunity to step up to the Alcohol Funny Car class a year and a half ago and his is "Hooked" so to speak. "The 7.50 class was a great start for me in the funny car deal. But racing these 2500 hp beasts is an absolute thrill", stated Cal. "The car is an ex Rob Atchison turn-key deal, and I am one of only a few guy to run the Wedge motor". I am a long time Chevy guy and to go to a Hemi just doesn't feel right. The best et Cal has run with the car is a 6.17@ 228, so a career best is likely going to be necessary to make what will be a very tough 8 car field.
For as much as he is looking forward to this weekend's event, he is really excited about a new Funny Car deal he introduced a few weeks back.
The Firebird body will take a back seat at a number of events, as he acquired one of very few 1955 Chevy Belair bodies. The body was originally on Texas native Dick Demet's ride and it is the world's quickest 55 Chevy. Dick has the only 5 second et for a '55 Chevy. Cal's plan is to have some fun with the '55, and race it at selected match races against other nostalgia bodied Funny Cars.
"I can't wait to pair up with another '50's nostalgia flopper at a match race in the North West".
Cal is sponsored by and would like to thank Canpo Electric, Boychuk Ventures, Trail Tire, Homestyle Construction, HDF Insurance, The Wild West Saloon, Les Co. Distribution (Lucas Oil) and Bel Engine Services.
Cal would like to thank all the crew for their hard work all season long and they include Anne Lamers, Dave Palmer, Norm Kolowich and Roger Walsh and Gary and Catherine Battle.

After this weekend's event the team heads South to Mission Raceway for the Lucas Oil National Open.

IHRA CARS RV & MARINE & MOTORSPORT ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONALS

Castrol Raceway Park

July 6-8, 2007

GO NORTH, YOUNG MAN!

(7-6-2007) EDMONTON, AL – In front of what promises to be the biggest audience in the history of the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta; Danny Rowe and the rest of the superstars from the International Hot Rod Association will do battle over the quarter-mile as the points battle in every professional eliminator rages on. Rowe, currently 3rd in the Pro Modified, anticipates a big weekend for the Unfinished Business team as the IHRA Nitro Jam invades his home country.

“It’s always nice to go back to the country you grew up in and race in front of the Canadian fans,” explained Rowe. “Castrol Raceway is a beautiful place and there is already a great deal of talk regarding the record-setting pre-race ticket sales. That’s great for the sport and great for all of the sponsors we have on board. Right now we’re 37 points out of first place and need to go rounds – plain and simple.”

The competition in the IHRA Pro Modified ranks is as fierce as ever and simply can’t be taken lightly by any competitor. The IHRA’s last outing in Tulsa proved that anyone on the qualifying sheet is capable of winning as evident by Pat Stoken’s dominating performance in Oklahoma.

“We have proven that we are capable of winning races and we’re always right in the thick of things. We just haven’t been able to capitalize when we need to,” explained Rowe. “We’re making strides and I know that we’re good enough to beat anyone that lines up next to us and now is the time to start showing what we’ve got.”

“Edmonton is a great fit for our team and the companies we work with,” Rowe said. “I’m a Calgary-native and I’m excited to see some friends and family that will come out.”

Dale Creasy Nitro Funny car

Creasy headed to unfamiliar territory

BEECHER, Ill. (July 5, 2007) Dale Creasy, Jr. doesn't need a GPS to find the Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta. He knows how to get there. In fact, he's been there before. When Creasy and the Torco Nitro Funny Car pull into Edmonton July 6-8 for the CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Racing Fuels, it will be unfamiliar territory.

Unfamiliar territory because for the first time in Dale's career he will be the defending event champion. "We're up for the challenge," Creasy said. "We did really well in Canada last year."

Doing well in Canada is what helped Creasy win the 2006 World Championship. He claimed all three wins during the '06 campaign north of the U.S. border, including back to back wins in Grand Bend and Edmonton.

While the 2006 Edmonton race ended nicely for the Evan Knoll sponsored team, it wasn't without challenges for Creasy Family Motorsports. After struggling through qualifying Creasy earn a sixth place position for eliminations. Once eliminations began, the Torco team found the right combination to unlock the gate to the winners circle.

"We're looking forward to this as much as anyone," Creasy added. "It's a great event and the beginning of the heart of our season. So, it will mean a lot to get off on the right foot here."

Creasy begins the defense of his Rocky Mountain National title July 6-8 at the Castrol Raceway in Edmonton.

Dale Creasy, Jr. and his championship Torco powered Nitro Funny Car, partner with high quality and performance companies like; Torco Race Fuels, Oakley, Red Line Oil, MSD, Crane Cams, BME, Fram Autolite, Polydyn TX7, TEK PAK, VSI, GM Performance and Beaver Shredding.

Quain Stott, Pro Mod

Stott to defend Rocky Mountain National title

COLUMBUS, N.C. (July 5, 2007) - Quain Stott and his LeeBoy Corvette, powered by Torco Race Fuels, head into Edmonton for the 5th Annual CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Racing Fuels to defend the title they captured last season. Stott, fresh off his runner-up finish in Tulsa, is looking for big things in Edmonton.

"Castrol Raceway is a great place to race," said the defending Torco Comp Plus Pro Modified World Champion. "We've enjoyed our success here."

When Stott won the event in 2006, it broke a two year win less streak and catapulted him to number two in points, setting the pace for his late season championship run. His 2005 showing was also strong. The semi-final appearance helped Stott finish number six in Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam points.

"We've made a bunch of friends here in the past five years," Stott said. "With all of the fantastic LeeBoy people in the area and right down to the fans that named their son Quain, Edmonton has become a special place for us."

Stott will need a good outing in Edmonton to continue his defense of the Pro Modified Championship. He currently holds down the number five spot and is within striking distance of the current points leader Scott Cannon. "We're all going to have to stay after it just to keep up with Scotty," said Stott. "He's had the car to beat so far. We'll just have to lean on it a little more."

Quain Stott Drag Racing partners with high performance companies like, LeeBoy Equipment, Torco Race Fuels, Richmond Gear, Mickey Thompson Tires, NGK Spark Plugs, Auto Meter, Stroud Safety, Santhuff Shocks, Fulton Race Engines, Stroupe Race Cars and Spartan Crank Shafts.

Tony Zizzo Jr., Top Fuel

Canadian race fans motivate Team Zizzo

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (July 5, 2007) - TJ Zizzo and the Race News Magazine Top Fuel Dragster head north of the border this week for the July 6-8 CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Race Fuels at the Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. The event marks the first trip to western Canada for the Race News Magazine team.

While Zizzo concentrates on qualifying and holding on to his number one position, he's looking forward to seeing the Edmonton area. "I've heard so much about Edmonton and the fans in the area, I can't wait to experience it first hand," TJ Zizzo said.

As the first quarter of the 2007 Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing series heads into Edmonton, Zizzo and his team will attempt to further establish itself as one of the main contenders for the title. "There's a lot of racing left to do this year," Zizzo added. "We're in a good spot. If we just stay consistent and concentrate on the round we are about to run, things will be fine."

Zizzo holds a slim 13 point margin over veteran Bruce Litton with a host of other teams, including; Bobby Lagana, Scotty Cannon and Doug Foley all close enough to take the lead should Zizzo open the door.

"There's no doubt when your sitting in the number one spot it puts a target on your back," Zizzo said. "That's OK. We don't mind having the bull's eye."

Team Zizzo will also fly the colors of Northwest Paving, Inc. of Alberta as part of a one race sponsorship.

The Zizzo Racing Team proudly represents Race News Magazine, Peak Antifreeze and HTP America.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONALS EXPECTED TO SHATTER PREVIOUS ATTENDANCE MARK

NORWALK, Ohio (July 5, 2007) -- Last season the walk-up crowd at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton made the Rocky Mountain Nationals the most heavily-attended race in the history of the facility. This season the fans are not taking any chances.

The advance ticket sales for the 2007 version of the Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam event in Edmonton by far exceeds anything ever seen before. Last year’s successful event, coupled with a star-studded field, combined to make the CARS RV & Marine & Motorsport Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Racing Fuels the hottest ticket in town.

“The ticket demand has been unbelievable,” IHRA president Aaron Polburn said of the Rocky Mountain Nationals. “Rob Reeves and his staff have done an outstanding job of keeping up with the phones because, quite honestly, they are ringing non-stop. In fact our next three races, first in Edmonton, then in Grand Bend and finally in Martin, Michigan, are way ahead of last year’s ticket sales numbers. Edmonton should be an exciting weekend and really jump-start the rest of the season.”

Defending world champion Dale Creasy Jr. will look to defend his Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Funny Car 2006 victory against the strongest and deepest Nitro Funny Car field Alberta, Canada has ever seen. Jack Wyatt will make the trip to Edmonton to do battle with Creasy while Andy Kelley, the runner up in Tulsa, and Bob Gilbertson will also look to knock Creasy off his perch.

Gilbertson, in fact, will be competing in his “Jungle Jim” tribute body, something extra for the fans in Edmonton to enjoy.

The Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Top Fuel class is also as strong and as deep than at any other time in IHRA history. T.J. Zizzo will enter Edmonton with the points lead but a number of different drivers are within striking distance. Bruce Litton, who was the runner up in Tulsa, is within a couple rounds of Zizzo heading into Castrol Raceway. Bobby Lagana Jr., Scotty Cannon and Doug Foley are also well within range of the front-running Zizzo.

“It’s early in the season and there is a lot of racing left,” Lagana said. “T.J. is off to a fast start and has a great car with a strong team so the rest of us really have to step up our games so he doesn’t run away with it. Edmonton is going to be a battle because it really is a pivotal race.”

Scott Cannon Jr. has had the strongest car thus far on the 2007 Nitro Jam circuit, but a number of different drivers have Cannon in their sights…including a nitrous car. Pat Stoken proved a nitrous car could compete in what last season was a blower car class, Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Modified. Stoken claimed the Ironman at the Skull Shine Sooner Nationals, putting a nitrous car in the winner’s circle at a Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam event for the first time since Mike Castellana won in Budds Creek during the 2005 season.

Kenny Lang, Ed Hoover, Danny Rowe and defending world champion Quain Stott also are within 100 points of Cannon in the race for the championship.

In Alcohol Funny Car it looks like it will be, as usual, Mark Thomas and Rob Atchison battling it out for the championship. But Terry Munroe might have something to say about it, in the end, as well. Munroe won the first event of the season in San Antonio before Thomas claimed the Ironman at the Spring Nationals in Rockingham. Atchison held serve with an Ironman victory at Tulsa Raceway Park.

“Three winners in three events, that’s kind of cool,” Atchison said after his victory in Tulsa. “This class is so strong. It’s a battle any time you race Mark, Terry Munroe and his team are running well and there are others who can beat you. This is going to be very exciting all season because every round will be a big round.”

The same can be said for the Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock class. John Montecalvo will head to Edmonton with the points lead, but that lead is by the slimmest of margins. Defending champion Pete Berner sits just one point behind Montecalvo on the strength of an Ironman victory in Tulsa. Robert Patrick, Brian Gahm, Rob Mansfield and Steve Spiess are also very much alive in the title hunt.

The CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Racing Fuels are scheduled for July 6-8. Pro qualifying will commence Friday, July 6 at 3 p.m. followed by a second pro qualifying session at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will offer two professional qualifying sessions as well, the first at 3 p.m. followed by the Cervus Contractors Equipment JCB Night of Fire beginning at 7:30.

Professional eliminations are slated to begin Sunday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m.
