The West Coast Pro Mods at the Rocky's.

The West Coast Pro Mods were one of the booked in Feature Classes last weekend at the Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton Ab. 10 cars turned out for their second point's event of the season. A 180 degree turn in conditions greeted the Pro Mod contingent from a week earlier at Mission Raceway. The team had to deal with sea level maximum hp conditions at MRP. This past weekend they had corrected air in the 4000 foot range and had to work hard to get the maximum hp their engines could avail. Leading the pack in qualifying was Joe Delehay with his Blown BAE combination between the 68 Camaro frame rails. He struggled with his first hit Saturday afternoon, but on the second run, he ripped off a 6.23 to lead the field. "It was not what we wanted to run, but we'll take the #1 spot in the field", stated Delehay after the run. There was a big jump down to the #2 spot, with Dan Vogt ending up second with a 6.48@ 216.13 mph lap. The next three were bunched real close, ranging from a 6.50 (Yvonne Lucas) to a 6.56 for Rick Di Stefano in the #5 spot with a 6.56. Between those two drivers was Ross Hogenson who went 6.51. Tim Vogt in the team's old Corvette rounded out the field with a 6.84/201. Tom Johanns was #6 with a 6.64 and Perry Krinitt with his 'waay cool' 52 Chevy ended up #7 with a 6.69. The final qualifier was run at around 11:00pm Saturday night, and the air was as good as it gets at Edmonton, but unfortunately the track temperature was only 65 degrees. A few teams opted out of the last session, but a couple of those that tried, managed to improve their times or bumped in the field. Joe Delehay was not so lucky! He was out to try and improve on his earlier 6.23, but he launched hard went around 70 feet, and then shook and wheel stood his Camaro, forcing him to lift. Tim Vogt improved his time and got in the field in the final session, and Dan Vogt went from #4 to #2. Wade Sjostrom ran a 6.93 but he ended up #9, a tenth outside.

Here is final qualifying:

1 698 Joe Delehay, Calgary AB, '68 Camaro 6.231 229.08
2 547 Dan Vogt, Regina SK, '63 Corvette 6.480 216.13
3 6889 Yvonne Lucas, Maple Valley WA, '68 Camaro 6.505 217.11
4 63 Ross Hogenson, Lethbridge AB, '63 Corvette 6.515 213.67
5 6695 Rick Distefano, Calgary AB, '70 Camaro 6.561 188.28
6 508 Tommy Johanns, Franktown CO, '53 Corvette 6.646 218.30
7 652K Perry Krinitt, Belgrade MT, '51 Chevy 6.690 212.83
8 542 Tim Vogt, Regina SK, '94 Corvette 6.843 201.85

------------ Not Qualified ------------

9 6617 Wade Sjostrom, Edmonton AB, '57 Bel Air 6.932 203.77
10 624 Perry Thyr, Drayton Valley AB, '02 Corvette 6.944 196.76 206.51

In round one, Delehay had Tim Vogt, Dan Vogt faced Perry Krinitt, Yvonne Lucas took on race one champion, Tom Johanns, and Ross Hogenson would race the biggest unknown in the event, Rickie "D" in the RH Race Cars Camaro. The first pairing saw Delehay run the quickest ET of the weekend, a great 6.14 to defeat Tim Vogt, who was 200 feet back with a 6.90. Tommy Johanns found his performance, a strong 6.34, and he defeated Yvonne Lucas despite her psychic .001 light coupled with a 6.53 ET. Dan Vogt defeated Perry Krinitt in the closest race of round one, but it was still over a tenth at the stripe. Vogt went 6.56 and Krinitt ran a 6.72. The final pairing saw Rick Di Stefano run his best run with his new car (they were relieved but far from satisfied), a 6.20/226. His opponent Ross Hogenson, repeated his qualifying run with another 6.51, but was well back.

Semi Finals... Delehay would take on Di Stefano in a battle of Calgarians, and this one had the potential to be a great race. Unfortunately it was over early, as Delehay shook hard and lifted, while the "D" man had a .001 light, left hard had to pedal at 300 feet, got the car back on track and ran a 6.46. The other semi saw Johanns repeat his earlier '30 pass with a 6.31 to dispatch Dan Vogt, who came up 2/10ths short in ET and the same amount in reaction time. His run was a 6.51.

It would be two blown cars in the final.

Would Johanns win his second event in a row, or would Rickie "D" finally get his first win at Edmonton after two previous runner-ups?

A pretty good start for both cars, with Di Stefano getting a .03 hole shot. At 60 feet he was well out in front and looked to be on a great pass. But right after that point he shook and rattled the tires, while Johanns was on his way to another 6.3 pass, this time a 6.33. Rick tried to tame his car down, but after the Camaro went hard right at the 250 foot mark, he lifted and coasted through to an 8 second runner-up ...again!

The win gives Johanns a big lead heading into race three at Medicine Hat in three weeks (July 17-18).

Overall, it was a pretty good weekend, and the series got to run in front of a massive crowd. Most of the teams had some success getting their cars dialed in. I expect two-four different cars for the next event as Tom Meheden, Wayne Hofer and Vern Mills should be back in action.

The classes Castrol Raceway owner Rob Reeves brought in to fill what is fewer professional IHRA classes, did the trick to give the fans what they come to see.... Entertainment. Top Alcohol Funny Cars, Pro Mods, Nitro Harleys, Pro Mod Bikes and blown Alcohol Nostalgia Funny Cars. Here is a short recap of what SpeedZone thought of the feature extra classes.

Rating the classes at the Rocky's.....

TAFC an "8 out of 10". It would have been a 9 out of ten if there were 8 cars instead of 7, and if the performances were a bit better. The high score was because John Evanchuk finally got a big win (without Bill being there too, sorry Bill could not resist) against THE best TAFC team in all of Canada, the Roger Bateman driven YNOT racing Mustang owned by 'Doc' Friesen.

WCPM: a 6 out of 10. Performance was just average. A couple strong cars were unfortunately missing (Vern Mills and Wayne Hofer as well as middle of the pack runners Keith Korecki, Tom Meheden and Duane Grosart). I was hoping Joe Delehay would have run quicker that a 6 teen. Tom Johanns bracket raced then to death for the second straight race win. The one positive was Ricky "D". He is close to getting his Camaro dialed in. He went 6.20 (with a pedal, an early lift and a soft tune up in it). He is very close to getting it right. The nitrous cars ran okay, but even they were off what they normally run at Edmonton. The Vogt brothers have lost their 6.30 tune-up running only 6.4's at the last two races. Hogenson struggled, as did Thyr. Yvonne Lucas is still getting a handle on the new power, but she did run a 6.50 with a .001 first round light.

Nitro Harley: 7 out of 10. Pretty good qualifying for the Nitro Hogs with 4 bikes in the "6'S". Eliminations were not bad, and the final was good with a 6.67 to a 6.81 win for Jamie Arkinstall.

Pro Mod Bike: 2 out of 10. A very low score mostly based on a very bad qualifying show Saturday. Round one saw more bikes break before leaving the line and then stalls down track. One rider came of his bike (he was okay). Eliminations were a bit better. Only Hope BC's Gary Christopher running to potential with two runs over 200 mph in the 7.0's. He lost in the final when something gave out in the turbo. Almost looked like the Turbo ate something and spit it out.

Nostalgia Alcohol Funny Cars: "A" group, a 9 out of 10. "B" group, 5 out of 10.

The "B" group. 5 out of 10. They are the teams left from the original IBAA. They did not have a full field (three of their own members, one "A" group fill in and three others who do not normally run with the IBAA group), and one of the extra cars oiled the track twice. Eliminations saw only five cars show (there was only a seven car field), and two of those broke. The final was great though, the only saving grace for the "B" side in m y opinion. Darrell Webb and Cody Anstead in a great side by side. 18 year old rookie Anstead in his first event in the ex-Bussey flopper, ran closer to the 7.20 index (a 7.24 to a 7.30), but he was treed by the veteran Webb, who got the win.

The "A" group. 9.5 out of 10. Hard to top the energy, quality of cars and close side by side racing. The entertainment the teams put on during their rounds on the track as well as the entertaining they do at night in their pit area is second to none. I know I am a bit of a biased reporter on them, but ask anyone at the track and they all agree, the Rocky Mountain floppers (their actual assoc) are a huge step above the original IBAA group. Six of the cars ran within a tenth of the 6.99 index (Steckler's official time was a 7.16 but he did go 6.98 in one session, less than .01 away from perfect), and the final was a great 6.99 to a 6.97 win for Ron Sekura over Joey Steckler. Talk about close! A couple losing runs were only because the cars went .01-.03 too quick. Very impressive!

The rating for the four IHRA feature classes (TF, Pro Fuel, Pro Nitro Funny Car and Jet Trucks) are as follows

Rain kept the cars from making a run on Friday, so Saturday Race Director Scooter Peaco decided to let three classes that were running 8 car qualified fields make an extra qualifier on Saturday much to the delight of the teams and the fans who were out early Saturday.

The West Coast Pro Mods, the TAFC's and the Pro Nostalgia funny cars all got the bonus run Saturday starting at 3:10pm

June 25-27, 2010

I had a chance to talk to Rob Reeves last Friday on the Edmonton Rocky's this coming weekend. It will be good! He has spent a lot of time to ensure this will be THE best Show in the IHRA again. And again the fans will likely come out in force to continue to make this the largest event in the sanctioning body. THis guy knows what it takes to put on a good show. He has double what most of the other events in the series host. The list of feature cars include:

Top Fuel: Bruce Litton, Bobby Lagana Jr., Del Cox Jr., Spencer Massey, Tim Boychuk (Paton car) and Ed Verenka in his strong running A/Fuel car.

There will be nine Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars including last weekend double up winner Mark "Mr. Explosive" Sanders. Top three point earner in the IHRA, Steve "Mill Road Boys" Nichols, Tim Boychuk, Terry Capp, Todd Lesenko, Tim Stevenson (Andy Beauchemin driver), Jay Mageau, Tim Nemeth, and Jack "The Sheriff" Harris.

TAFC: 8 car field including, John Evanchuk, Ken Webster, Nathan Sitko, Roger Bateman, Trevor Lebsack, John Childs, Scott McVey and Team Ace driver Rob Atchison.

The Pro Fuel class will have only two A/Fuelers, Jeff Hamelink and local Keith Falconer.

Two BAD's will race the A/Fuelers and they are Ashley Bart and Greg Sereda. The West Coast Pro Mod association will battle for and 8 car field on Sunday.

A dozen Pro Mods will battle it out Friday and Saturday for the 8 car field Sunday. They include Ross Hogenson, Rick Di Stefano, Joe Delehay, Perry Thyr, Tom Meheden, Wayne Hofer, Dan Vogt, Tim Vogt, Vern Mills, Wade Sjostrom, Perry Krinnet and Colorado's Tom Johanns

The two local Nitro Funny Car drivers, Randy Bykowsky and Jason Duschene will likely put in a few laps as well.

The biggest class will be the 6.99 - 7.50 class of Funny Cars.

The original IBAA group has split into tow assoc. The Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Car assoc. (the larger more active group), and the IBAA original that has 4-6 funny cars in it. There will be an "A" and a "B" group with the 8 quickest running a 6.99 index and a 7.20 group running 7.20.

For more Nitro, Reeves has also brought in the Nitro Harleys. A dozen will battle for an 8 bike field as well. A Pro Mod Bike class will also compete in an 8 bike field as well.

Finally a couple Jet trucks and wheelstanders will round out the feature cars.

Close to 70 cars will highlight Friday night and Saturday night qualifying as well as Sunday eliminations.

The biggest Sportsman classes (beside the box and no box classes) will be Top Dragster and Top Sportsman. Both will be 32 car fields and will include an elite 8 shoot-out as well.

The IHRA schedule for the Rocky's is here.
