First time Doorslammer competitor Dean Petersen wins at Port Alberni.

Dean Petersen in the Petersen Racing Mustang defeat Roy Lazic in the final round of the Canada West Doorslammer exhibition event at the "Thunder in the Valley" event in sunny Port Alberni. Over 6000 spectators lined the race track on Sunday (a total fan count of well over 11, 000 for the weekend) to see some great side by side action from the 7-8 second door cars. Rod Charlton was the lone semi final loser in the 11 car field. All 13 cars entered did run the necessary 8.99 or better to qualify, but Shane

Wangler (above) had a small on track mishap in the shut down area and was unable to make first round and Chris Lamb broke as well leaving 11 cars to battle in out in eliminations. All the racers and spectator had a great time and all involved said they look forward to going back in 2004.

One of the more unique aspects of this event was the fact they ran their electronic timers like they did back in the 70's-80's where they run the MPH clocks 66 feet past the finish line. This gives the the competitors who never ever click it off right at 1320 feet, a bunch more speed. I really liked the old way. But the insurance companies were concerned about Top Fuel speeds, so they shortened the timing area. I liked the old way. TF speeds could be in the 340 range. Rob Murphy ran 199 in his Daytona and Rob Charlton ran almost 190. I bet they like the old way as well.

In the Pro class, Howard Hilborn driving his 27 T defeated Terry Shulfiita in his 71 Chevelle. Modified saw Mark Nameth in his 5.0 litre Mustang take out Brian Nesbitt driving his 71 Chevy Pick-up. In Street class, Ken Irving defeated Leanne Baum. Over 225 competitors made laps down the 1/4 mile. A couple other notable runs included Dave O'Hara (right) making the first ever 200 pass on Vancouver Island on a Bike as he made the fans go crazy wheeling his Top Fuel Harley in exhibition runs. Leon Aines ran well over 218 mph and ex-Island resident, Hugh Ridley made 7.50 laps in his Blown Alcohol Dragster.

August 16, 2003 Thunder in the Valley Port Alberni.

5000-6000 Spectators were on hand for day two of the biggest drag racing event on Vancouver Island. The Canada West Doorslammers were the feature class at the mid Island Airport facility. Duane Grosart's 55 Chevy (left) and 12 other doorslammers are on hand for this weekends event. Duane leads qualifying so far with a 7.52 best. Rob Murphy is #2 with a 7.71. Rob Charlton, Roy Lazic, and John Collette (below) are all in the 7's as well after three of four qualifying sessions. One more in the morning before eliminations at noon tomorrow. The other competitors include Layne Wooley, Joe Mellof, Steve Ellis, Grant Howell, Dean Petersen (below), Chris Lamb, Terry Langdan Davis and Shane Wangler

Also on hand for exhibition passes are Leon Aines in his alcohol Funny Car who ran 218mph Dave O'Hara and Wayne Eastcott in their TF Harleys and Hugh Ridley in his Alcohol Dragster.

April 15, 2003 The Lucas Oil event from Boise Idaho is here.

Finals are done at Houston

Houston proved to be an event with a number of similarities to a couple other nationals this year. The heavy hitters keep on winning.

In Comp. Eliminator, Mike Trumble win in his first outing of the year to defeat Brian self who was in his first National final but in his second final of the year at Houston. He won in Comp at Houston to start the year. Both cars took heavy cic's all weekend and ended up with permanent ones effective Monday.

Super Stock was a classic match-up of two hitters in the class. Kevin Helms took on Div. 7 standout Jimmy DeFrank and got the home state win for the fans. Kevin cut an .006 light and won the double break out race,

Stock was another star filled final with Peter Biondo and Jeff Hefler duking it out. This time the home town boy did not make good as Biondo got the win over a red lighting Hefler. They two also matched up last year with the same result.

Super Comp had Roger Warren going to the final round for the first time since the 1984 Cajun's. He got the win in a double break out over Lonnie Grim.

In Super Gas, Houston multi-time winner Tommy Phillips had a perfect light and a smaller break out in the double break final against Jeff Franklin. He went 8.898 to miss the perfect run by only 2/1000ths.

Sunday April 6,2003 Sunday finals in sportman classes

Jeff Lane looking very strong in Super Stock.

The Lang Bros. dominate Stock. Mary Ann Method right with the Langs.

Vegas was good to Division six competitors! Jeff Lane (left) picked up his second Super Stock national event win of the year, as he took his SS/CM Grand Am to the winners circle over professional sportsman racer Dan Fletcher. With the win, Jeff takes over the top spot in the National Super Stock standing from Peter Biondo. Another Div. six racer Mark Faul is in fourth place after Vegas.

In Stock, the North West dominated the competition, with three of the four competitors hailing from the great NW. Toby Lang was on one side of the Ladder and Jody on the other they where they sliced and diced their way through every competitor until they met in the final. There, they have rt's within one thousand of each other, and ran it through the top end, and in a double breakout, Toby got the win, by breaking out the least .04 under, to Jody's .053 under his dial. In the semis, Jody took out Div. six rival Mary Ann Method, taking the stripe for a .008 margin.

Here all all the final round results from the "Summit Nationals" at "The Strip".

Saturday April 5, 2003....

......was not a great day for Division six in the Super classes, as the only two competitors left in Super Comp were eliminated in the fourth round. Mike Henderson got beat up by Ashley Force (ya John's daughter) when she had her second dead on et (9.05) in eliminations. She is also cutting great .0 lights. Dick Van der Meer also lost in round four to Div.seven competitor Kain Gallaugher. But in Stock the North west is looking good, with Mary Ann Method, Jody Lang, brother Toby and Eric Waldo all advanced to the fourth round. 13 competitors are left in Stock. Super Stock has All star Jeff Lane and Mark Faul both heading into round three of competition. 12 players are still in the field. Comp eliminator saw the only Canadian in the field, Jirka Kaplan, in that bitchin' AA/AM altered go into hibernation, with a sleepy .336 light and losing to David Kramer. Even with the bad light, Jirka was only 6 inches from getting the win as he went .678 under to try and chase him down. That would have been a costly CIC.

Friday Aprl 4, 2003

In Comp qualifying was highlighted by Calgary's Jirka Kaplan in AA/AM. Jirka's blown Altered ripped down the 1/4 mile with a best of 6.55 (.730 under) at over 205 mph. Jirka will be at the Mission Divisional event trying to be the first ever to run a sub 6.50 pass in a Comp class other than Pro Mod. To make the field, you had to run better than .473 under. No Pro Mods were in the field this weekend, and the best A/ND pass came from Wayne Ramay with a .694 under 7.176.

In Super Stock, the turbo charged SS/DX owned and driven by John Gallina went an incredible 8.229 (1.511 under). Michael Ogburn made a great high elevation pass of a 8.954 (1.296 under). Both these top qualifiers will be at Mission divisional race in May with goals to set world standards in both classes. Gallina will try for for the first ever sub 7 second pass in Stock history. He ran 8.02 at Mission last year. Ogburn will be trying for the first ever 8.50 pass by a Super Stock Hemi. 48 cars will run in eliminations.

Stock saw 99 cars qualify for eliminations, led by Sara Norseworthy in her F/TruckSA. She went a 1.343 under 12.597. The B/SA of Clark Holroyd went a 1.287 under 10.55 to nail down the number 2 spot. A/S Ford hitter Robert Pond was third with a 10.312, and A/SA "first in the nines" Bobby DeArmond was #6 with a 10.376. Go to Drag Race Central or NHRA.com for all the details.

Updated march 31, 2003 10:00 am Monday.

Word on Larry Winters is that he is in fact in ICU at Tucson. He has some swelling around the brain due to a pretty hard hit and concussion. More when I hear.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. It does not appear to be to real serious though!

I hate this stuff. But anyone that does not think Drag Racing has any risk involved is mistaken. Like any high speed sport, or almost anything you do, the risks are there. The trade off is that drag racing of the most exciting, fun and safe motorsports you can partake in.

March 31, 2003 South Western International Raceway Finals

Racing was not completed until close to 9:00 pm Sunday due to high winds, and a major synthetic oil down in the early rounds. As well, when most of the classes were down to the final few rounds Larry Winter crashed his Super Eliminator (7.90) dragster (thankfully, he was just sent to the hospital for observation) just past the finish line on a winning run, and that made for another one hour delay. Add all this to the fact that the usual first round of eliminations for the larger (64+ cars), that is normally run on Saturday's, did not happen. You know the rest of the story, it made for a very long weekend of racing and a sad one with the crash and tragic death of Division six sportsman racer Don Rhyne.

Here is the final report and final round results courtesy NHRA Field Marketing. Go to Drag Race Central for all the round by round results.

Joe Mozeris grabbed the win in Comp. Eliminator over Wayne Ramay with a 7.144 second pass at 183.59 mph. Ramay also set a record earlier in the day running an adjusted elapsed time of 6.91 seconds breaking the old record of 6.97 seconds.
