Finals are done at Houston Houston proved to be an event with a number of similarities to a couple other nationals this year. The heavy hitters keep on winning. In Comp. Eliminator, Mike Trumble win in his first outing of the year to defeat Brian self who was in his first National final but in his second final of the year at Houston. He won in Comp at Houston to start the year. Both cars took heavy cic's all weekend and ended up with permanent ones effective Monday. Super Stock was a classic match-up of two hitters in the class. Kevin Helms took on Div. 7 standout Jimmy DeFrank and got the home state win for the fans. Kevin cut an .006 light and won the double break out race, Stock was another star filled final with Peter Biondo and Jeff Hefler duking it out. This time the home town boy did not make good as Biondo got the win over a red lighting Hefler. They two also matched up last year with the same result. Super Comp had Roger Warren going to the final round for the first time since the 1984 Cajun's. He got the win in a double break out over Lonnie Grim. In Super Gas, Houston multi-time winner Tommy Phillips had a perfect light and a smaller break out in the double break final against Jeff Franklin. He went 8.898 to miss the perfect run by only 2/1000ths.

Jirka's blown Altered ripped down the 1/4 mile with a best of 6.55 (.730 under) at over 205 mph. Jirka will be at the Mission Divisional event trying to be the first ever to run a sub 6.50 pass in a Comp class other than Pro Mod. To make the field, you had to run better than .473 under. No Pro Mods were in the field this weekend, and the best A/ND pass came from Wayne Ramay with a .694 under 7.176. In Super Stock, the turbo charged SS/DX owned and driven by John Gallina went an incredible 8.229 (1.511 under). Michael Ogburn made a great high elevation pass of a 8.954 (1.296 under). Both these top qualifiers will be at Mission divisional race in May with goals to set world standards in both classes. Gallina will try for for the first ever sub 7 second pass in Stock history. He ran 8.02 at Mission last year. Ogburn will be trying for the first ever 8.50 pass by a Super Stock Hemi. 48 cars will run in eliminations. Stock saw 99 cars qualify for eliminations, led by Sara Norseworthy in her F/TruckSA. She went a 1.343 under 12.597. The B/SA of Clark Holroyd went a 1.287 under 10.55 to nail down the number 2 spot. A/S Ford hitter Robert Pond was third with a 10.312, and A/SA "first in the nines" Bobby DeArmond was #6 with a 10.376. Go to Drag Race Central or NHRA.com for all the details.
Updated march 31, 2003 10:00 am Monday. Word on Larry Winters is that he is in fact in ICU at Tucson. He has some swelling around the brain due to a pretty hard hit and concussion. More when I hear. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. It does not appear to be to real serious though! I hate this stuff. But anyone that does not think Drag Racing has any risk involved is mistaken. Like any high speed sport, or almost anything you do, the risks are there. The trade off is that drag racing of the most exciting, fun and safe motorsports you can partake in. March 31, 2003 South Western International Raceway Finals Racing was not completed until close to 9:00 pm Sunday due to high winds, and a major synthetic oil down in the early rounds. As well, when most of the classes were down to the final few rounds Larry Winter crashed his Super Eliminator (7.90) dragster (thankfully, he was just sent to the hospital for observation) just past the finish line on a winning run, and that made for another one hour delay. Add all this to the fact that the usual first round of eliminations for the larger (64+ cars), that is normally run on Saturday's, did not happen. You know the rest of the story, it made for a very long weekend of racing and a sad one with the crash and tragic death of Division six sportsman racer Don Rhyne. Here is the final report and final round results courtesy NHRA Field Marketing. Go to Drag Race Central for all the round by round results. Joe Mozeris grabbed the win in Comp. Eliminator over Wayne Ramay
with a 7.144 second pass at 183.59 mph. Ramay also set a record earlier
in the day running an adjusted elapsed time of 6.91 seconds breaking
the old record of 6.97 seconds. COMPETITION ELIMINATOR March 29, 2003 courtesy NHRA field marketing Top qualifiers in the three sportsman classes at Tucson are Scott

Super Stock; and Marka Gallina of Henderson, Nev., in Stock. The five
competitors (in TAD, TAFC, Comp, Super Stock and Stock) will share
the $3,500 Sealed Power Low Qualifier bonus. March 28, 2003 RACING KICKS OFF IN TUCSON TUCSON, Ariz. - In the first rounds of qualifying for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Southwestern International Raceway, Gary Carter sits on top of the Comp. Eliminator class with a pass on 7.243 seconds in his front engine dragster. John Gallina of Las Vegas took the top spot in Super Stock after the first day of qualifying with a run of 8.503 seconds, and is followed by Phoenix resident Kip Martin in his '64 Mustang. Number one in Stock is Marka Gallina of Henderson, Nev., while Leo Shaver is on top in Sportsman Motorcycle and the Kerker Motorcycle Series. A pair of Tucson residents will look to knock off Shaver in the motorcycle class as Tom Patterson and Tom Lannie qualified third and seventh respectively.
