2005..........................Year 4....................The race to the 8.40's Photo gallery is here. Photos courtesy Shannon Macdonald and Bill Jeffery. May 16, 2005 West Coast Hemi Shootout results. 10 'Hemis' made the trek to Mission Raceway for the "UBS West Coast Hemi Shootout". As many as 14 were expected but iffy weather and a bit of breakage kept. Bob Mazzolini, John Rains, Joe Faherty and Rick Houser from attending. A few cars made la[ps on Thursday during the test n tune including Mike Ogburn Jerry Jenkins and Jon Percy in his all new 64 Savoy. It was a warm muggy day and the top numbers were low 8.70's. Friday qualifying was run under cool conditions in session one of the shootout which ran at the end of Super Stock qualifying. Corrected air was in the 800 foot range with a barometer that was not quite high enough to se record setting performances according to most of the crew chiefs. But that did not mean we would not see some exciting runs. In the first pairing out Jim Isherwood (SS/EA) was up against Norm Scott (SS/BA). Both cars carry the front wheels out a long way, in this run was no exception. Scott got his wheels way up in the right lane and when he came down, the car bounced very close to the wall. Norm steered hard to the left to try and keep the car off the wall and also kept his foot in it. The Savoy scraped the wall at the 300 foot mark and tore off the right rear tail light, but Norm amazingly kept his foot in it and not only ripped off the tail light but ripped off a 9.19 145 pass that had every one including DD Mike Rice shaking their heads in amazement. What a start to the event!! Who said that only the pros put on a good show? Larry Pfister has cool video coverage of the wheelstand here (a couple other wheelstands are included in this video including Jon Percy). Mark Vieira, in the awesome black flamed 68 Dart, just got licensed on Thursday, but he left before the tree was activated on his first qualifier. Mike Booker went 8.902 and Jon Percy ran a solid 9.09 after fine tuning the chassis after a couple wild launches on Thursday (also on that video clip). Allyn Lee ran a solid base line 8.76 153.63 for the best shot by a stick car. Michael Ogburn ran 8.69 and Jerry Jenkins one upped his team mate to a 8.67 (just 1/100 off his career best). Harry Holton was the last one out and he saved the best for last. After a strong wheels up launch he came down to earth with a 8.56 at a A. Lee equally 153.63. Here is the field after one round of qualifying. Peter Wille did not make it out for qualifying until the last session on Friday. Round one qualifying 1 7503 SS/AA Harry Holton, Modesto CA, '68 Barracuda
8.561 9.90 -1.339
Friday Round two. Harry decided to sit out the second session as did Mike Ogburn due to engine damage (piston ring). Norm Scott also skipped the session as he had to fix some suspension damage after hit scrape with the wall. He would like to thank Bucky Austin and his team for their help in making repairs. In round two, the weather got hotter and no one improved their earlier numbers, But Mark Vieira waited for green this time and ran 8.900 jumping up to the number 7 spot in the field. Jerry Jenkins made a great lap considering the temperature and humidity, turning in an 8.69. All Lee spun the tires to a 8.86 and Mike Booker slowed to a 8.98 Round two qualifying 1 7503 SS/AA Harry Holton, Modesto CA, '68 Barracuda
8.561 9.90 -1.339 Friday round three 1 7503 SS/AA Harry Holton, 8.561 Saturday Morning Final qualifying................................Cool conditions dawned on Saturday morning , and no rain after heavy showers over night. Super Stock was first out, but track drying would take a couple hours to complete. The air conditions were much better than Friday, but being the first class out on Saturday after all the rain over night could affect traction. Norm Scott Mike Booker and Jim Isherwood all improved their et's, but only Scott moved up the ladder in the first eight cars down the track. Holton was the last car down the track and he had the Cuda loaded up for a possible record. Harry launched but spun the tires almost immediately ending any chance for a record. Here is the field after final qualifying for the Hemi Shootout. 1 7503 SS/AA Harry Holton, Modesto CA, '68 Barracuda
8.561 -1.339 1. SS/AA Harry Holton, vs 10. SS/EA James Isherwood . 2. SS/AA Jerry Jenkins vs 9. SS/AA Mike Booker. 3 SS/AA Michael Ogburn vs 8. SS/A Peter Wille. 4 SS/A Allyn Lee vs 7. SS/AA Mark Vieira. 5 SS/BA Jon Percy vs 6. SS/BA Norman Scott. Shootout Elimination's Round one..... was the upset round of the race with three of the first round pairings ending up with the lower qualified cars advancing. Norm Scott took on Jon Percy in a heads up SS/BA pairing, and Scott took the win over a red lighting Percy 9.09 to 9.16. Mark Vieira upset Allyn Lee in the stick car, with a great .003 light and an 8.81 to Lee's 8.80 but slower leaving .120 rt. Mike Ogburn defeated a red lighting Peter Wille with an 8.76. Jerry Jenkins had idle and rpm problems while staging against Mike Booker, and was timed out on the autostart system, giving Booker a freebie. And to end off the round Harry Holton ran another 8.50, this time an 8.59 to easily dispatch of Jim Isherwood in the wheelstanding Belvedere. In round two, Harry had a bye run and clicked it early, Mark Vieira continued his upset ways, and defeated Ogburn, who said afterward, "I should not of run the car as we knew it was wounded". Mike's run ate up the engine big time and hung a couple valves in loosing 8.82 to 8.81. Norm Scott defeated Booker in a close 9.13 to 8.92. Semi Finals.......................Scott being on the favorable bottom side of the ladder, got the bye run in the semis to reach the final round. It what would be considered THE upset of HEMI racing, Mark Vieira took out the big Dog, the "legend" Harry Holton in the 'HARcuda' with a quicker leaving 8.86 to Harry's tire spinning 8.82. The margin at the stripe was 3/100ths. Harry was running 1.14 - 1.16 60ft's throughout the weekend and in the semi finals the car spun to a 1.28 60 foot. The final was set for rookie Mark Vieira and the wall hitting SS/BA driven by Norm Scott. Due to darkness the final could not be run Saturday evening, and would have to be completed on Sunday. Sunday came and included the wet stuff, which continued all day long. The decision was made for the two finalists to split the cash. Too bad, cause it would of been a great final round. Vieira had 2 1/2 tenths performance advantage but Norm in the "BA" car would get 3/10ths at the tree. All in all the race was great, and the spectators loved the cars. The racers wanted me to say that they had a great time, the BBQ was awesome and the overall response was overwhelming. Norm Scott stated it was his greatest moment, just to reach the final, and was stoked about the fans response not only to the "A" and "AA" cars, but the "B" and "E" cars as well. He now just has to get his Savoy into the shop for body repairs. Mark Vieira was at a loss for words, as the shy driver from Modesto was ecstatic about making the final round. All involved had to thank Michael Ogburn for his support of this event and also wanted to thank all the other sponsors. Elimination's ladder

Thursday May 1 Shootout Preview.............................. Has this class ever grown here on the West Coast. In the last two years a half dozen cars have been built, and most specifically for Super Stock Hemi Shootouts. The Michael Ogburn West Coast Hemi team has brough more prominence to this class than possibly any other out there. They promote the class and sponsor events on the West Coast and even in other areas of North America. This year the team had added more clout to their stable as they have added two more cars with the fabled Harry Holton power. Mark Vieira is set to debut his new SS/AA 68 Dart with a wild flamed paint job. The other car is a new SS/BA Savoy out of Idaho owned by Jon Percy. Also set to debut at the quickest Hemi Shootout in North America are Bob Mazzolini, Rick Houser, John Raines and Joe Faherty. The West Coast team still includes Ogburn, Harry Holton, Jerry Jenkins and Jared Jordan. Mike Booker from Davenport Washington will be out as will Red Deer's Allyn Lee and Victoria's Peter Wille. Other SS;/BA cars include Norm Scott and possibly Chuck Rayburn. Unfortunately Dave Raybourn will not be at Mission, as he will not have all the parts needed to freshen his 426 in time. The race has over $10,000 in prize money with the winner receiving a cool $5,000 and the low et of the event recieiving a quaranteed $1,000. Notice to all competitors attending the Shootout. VP Fuels has Co-sponsored the race along with RJ Enterprises. They have given us a break on the fuel which we will pass along to you. Your entry fee for the event this year will include Fuel (C-25) for qualifying and the shootout. Entry fee is 125.00 US Here is the tentative list for the shootout. Bob Mazzolini SS/AA Run 8.70's
