July 18, 2003

The cars are rolling in for this weekend's National Open at Mission Raceway. Close to 300 cars are expected to compete. The two Top Fuel Exhibition cars fired up tonight at Boston Pizza, and the crowd loved it, as Jack Harris and Scott Mason ran the "go juice" to the delight of everyone, young and old. Harris expects to run in the "fives" this weekend, to be the quickest Nostalgia Top Fuel car ever in Canada. He has the credentials to do it, as he has the fastest pass in history, a 256mph blast, run just a few weeks ago at Pomona. He has also run in the 5.70's. Scott is going to try and lasso the "Sheriff". The Alcohol cars are out in pretty good numbers and I expect to see a pretty good "A" and "B" show. Pro Street has yet to excite me this year, but there are a few more cars this weekend than in past races this season. No, Glen Braid is not out yet. Darn! Top Comp looks to be a great field this weekend, with as many as 20 30 on the property. We'll have the results for you late tomorrow as I have a large family gathering tomorrow afternoon after the racing. So check back.

BIG RIGS ROLL INTO MISSION RACEWAY PARK

Mission, B.C., June 4, 2003 – The fastest and best-looking heavy-hauling trucks in the West will converge at Mission Raceway Park this weekend for the 3rd Annual B.C. Big Rig Weekend. It is something a little different for the race track – trucks only, and no cars allowed!

Conceived of by local trucking enthusiast Dale Feechuck in 2000, the B.C. Big Rig Weekend has become the largest event of its kind in Western Canada. Dale passed away in early 2001 before he could see his vision come to fruition, but his fellow enthusiasts have taken care of his project for him. There really is something for every trucking enthusiast at the B.C. Big Rig Weekend. There are two ways for truck owners to participate – race or show. Mission’s drag strip will see all manner of trucks, from pick-ups up to Big Rigs, hauling down the ¼-mile for awards and bragging rights. Expect to see some special exhibition trucks, capable of mind-boggling performance that would out-gun most modern performance cars, running over 100 mph in the quarter mile!

Those special trucks that combine a high standard of appearance with everyday working capability are welcome at the Show and Shine. Antiques and tow trucks, company trucks and log haulers, there is a class for every rig, and prizes for each class. Not only that, but there will be awards for best engine, interior, lights and paint.

But the award everyone wants to win is the Dale Feechuck “A Trucker’s Dream” Memorial Trophy, which will be awarded to the “Best in Show” Canadian Truck. Dale would be proud of what his weekend has become. The B.C. Big Rig Weekend goes this Saturday and Sunday at Mission Raceway Park, located on Highway 11 between the Mission Bridge and Lougheed Highway.

The gates open at 9:00 am each day, and admission is only $10.00 either day, or $16.00 for the entire weekend.
