Sunday July 18, 2004 Lucas Oil Cars and Canadians shine at "Lucas Oil Canada"sponsored event......Sunday final round photos courtesy Gerry Frechette

(photo gallery including winners circle will be up Monday)

Jophn Evans was R/U in Top Comp to Randy Johnson.

John Evans Racing, Paul Julien Motorsports, and 'Dragon' Don Murray all win for their corporate sponsor. Evan's had the best team showing for the weekend as hired gun Cory Thompson (far lane) from Abbotsford takes the Super Comp Wally over Chuck Linne from Bremerton Washington. Cory had 40/1000ths package compared to Linne's 44/1000ths for about a 4 inch victory. The win by Thompson almost assures him the National Open title for 2004. His unofficial total is 243 points. In second place is Ashley Ziarko with 187 points and Mission R/U Chuck Linne has 179. The only way for Ziarko to get the title is for there to be more than 16 cars at PG, she has to win and Cory would have to lose in round one, or Cory would have to miss the event and then she would have to make the final round. Team owner John Evans was the R/U in Top Comp and has extended his lead over Scott Taylor who lost in round one. But race winner Randy Johnson moved to within 10 points of Evans. John's total is 231 and Johnson has 221. John would have to go two more rounds than Evans if he is to have any chance of the crown. The big question is will he make the trek to Prince George from Bothell Washington. Don Murray (far lane) won the 'Best Buy' Street Car Pro Street shoot-out over Garret Richards form Tacoma. Murray and Richards were # 3 and #2 qualifier but #1 qualifier and race favorite Rash Dhaliwal (who was the only car to run better than 7.50) broke the Mustang after running the weekend's best 6.97/205 in his first round single. Murray is a multiple Wally winner in National Open competition. In the final round he defeated Richards with a 7.53/182. Garret shook real hard and got very loose, and pedaled it to a 7.93/181. In Top Alcohol action, Paul Julien (below, tower lane) in his TAD got the win in the "B" final against Tim Nemeth in his TAFC. Julien ran a 5.77/246 to Nemeth's all over the track mid 6 second lap. Four of Sunday's Finals showcased "Team Lucas Oil". Canadian director Don Baker looked very proud in the winner's circle pictures.

The other winners from the weekend included, In Top Alcohol Shoot-out "A" final Roger Bateman (near lane) proved to be both the class of the Funny Car contingent and of the top 4 "A" cars with a win over Bill Edwards JR. in the flopper vs digger finale. Bateman's 3/10ths of a second handicap start over (the ratio when the flops ran the digs) was too much to over come. Edwards actually ran quicker with a 5.81/240 to Bateman's 5.92 but it was too much to overcome with the 3/100 handicap advantage.

In Super Gas, Eddie Plaizer (far lane) won trophies at two consecutive races. Two weeks ago at Edmonton he won the IHRA Iron Man (their version of the Wally), with his Funny Car, and this weekend he took out Daryl Baker, also from Edmonton in his Roadster. Eddie's 6/100ths starting line advantage was too much for Baker to make up at the finish line. In Super Street, Abbotsford Gerry Epps won with his cool Mustang over Bremerton's Bob Zurbrugg driving a Nova. In Combo, Delta's Ken Johnston (left near lane) driving the "Johnston and Johnston" 1955 Chevy, defeated the Ram pick-up owned and driven by Kelly Thomas. Johnston had 5/100ths on the tree and took the stripe by just over .01.

On to the Bracket Classes......In Sportsman Motorcycle, Stewart Kienas (near lane) made his second final round of the weekend, but he could not double up in the win column as Dan Temple got the victory when Stu broke out by 2/100ths. Kienas had a large rt advantage but took way to much stripe handing the win to "Dan the Man". Super Pro winner was Dale Green (below, left lane) from Covington Washington driving his Super Comp dragster to victory over Damien Giddens driving the family Nova. Grant had .057 at the tree and that was more than enough for victory. He also made the final round in the Electronics race on Saturday losing to Jim Behnke. In Pro Bracket, Shawn Kvaas took his Stock Firebird to the winners circle over Peter Van Drimmelen. Peter, driving his cool Fury, red lit away his chance. In Sportsman competition, Glenn Fillingham got the easy victory over 'young gun' Bobby Ehlers when the "Bobster" red lit in his first NHRA final. In Jr. Lightning, Gary Howe Jr. won and wrapped up the Jr title. He defeated Mission's Hope Allen in the final round. In Jr. Thunder, Brandon Rachel took home the Wally, with a victory over two time weekend finalist Chris Cannon.

In the Top Fuel exhibition on Sunday, Brett Harris (below, far lane) had the best lap of the weekend with a 6.12 in Sundays first run. Dad Jack's best was a 6.70 also in the first run on Sunday. Overall the performance of the TF cars was a little disappointing, but all the other classes and the Top Alcohol cars made up for their lack of performance. Hopefully, these cars will step up their performance next year if Mission can bring in an eight car field like they tried to do this year.

Saturday July 17, 2004

Jim Behnke won the electronics Gamblers race on Saturday and Stewart Kienas won the Non Electronics version. Ashlyn Rice won the Jr. Thunder Gold Crown race Saturday over Chris Cannon. On Friday Ashlyn, actually had the throttle stick in her Jr. and she went all the way into the sand trap on the far end. Quite possibly the longest run ever for a Jr. Dragster. Ashlyn (daughter of DD Mike Rice) stayed vey calm and cool through the ordeal, and was quick in deciing not to make the sharp left turn at the finish line. To go on an win is very cool for the calm cool and collected nin year old. Way to go Ashlyn!!! And then in Lightning, Dustin Bills won over Chris Cannon's sister, Nikki Cannon. Nikki possibly would have won the race but her steering wheel came off in here hands and she made a great attempt to keep the car straight up the finish line. She actually stopped the car a few feet past the finish line and lost a close race as here car was inched closer and closer to the guard rail. She stopped the car just as it brushed the wall. The good looking jr. sustained no damage. A good job by the teenaged Cannon. She'll be back in action Sunday.

Other Saturday highlights. (Pictures will be posted on Sunday night.)

Top Fuel Nostalgia

Brett Harris Is driving the Nitro Thunder car instead of pop Jack, because Jack is driving the John Blanchard car. The reason regular dirver Denver Shutz was not allowed to cross the boarder Saturday morning. Luckily Brett is also licenced to drive one of these machines. Unfortunately, niether car made a good lap on Saturday. Jack got loose in Blanchard's "American Eagle" one lap one and then blew it up on the burnout on the second attempt. Brett started to shimmy the frnt tires backing up from the burnout on his first lap and then accidently blipped the throttle, which I believe disengaged the input shaft. On lap two, he went to half track and clicked it off the reason not known. That lap was in the seven's. Hopefully the feature cars put in a better show on Sunday.

Top Comp has 20 cars in the field and Shawn Cowie leads with a 6.60/207. Bob Kokotailo is on the bump with a 8.04 in the 'Superman' car. The car count for the event is 295 cars. A pretty good turn out. No mishaps in general except for Dudley clease who kicked the rods out on his first lap of the weekend. Too bad for the local guy.

This weekend at Mission Raceway Park.

Go here for Paul Julien's pre race press release.

One of the biggest events of the year at Mission Raceway in on tap this weekend. The 12th annual Canadian National Open starts Friday with 'Test n Tune' and then a very cool presentation at the Boston Pizza where the featured 'Nitro Thunder' Top Fuel nostalgiadragster owned and driven by Jack "the Sheriff" Harris will light up the sky with the sounds and smell of race 'pop', Nitromethane. An annual preview to the weekend racing that draws a bunch of gearheads of the popular after racing "dinner spot". Racing Harris twice daily on Saturday and Sunday is Denver Shults in John Blanchard's AA/FD.

The other feature for the "National Open" is annual "Top Alcohol Funny Car and Dragster Shoot-out". This is the fourth season MRP has run the "Shootout" and the National Open. It pits the two quickest Funny Cars and two quickest Dragsters in an "A" round and the rest of the cars in a "B" elimination's shootout. A must see for the race fans as the two classes very seldom race each other except at events like this. Cars expected for the Shootout include local drivers Paul Julien, Leo Grocock, Bill Edwards Jr. and Dudley Clease in Top Alcohol Dragster. Locals in Funny Car include Tim Nemeth and the Dave Dickison owned Firebird. Out of town teams expected are a bunch from Alberta including the Top Alcohol Dragster owned by Ken Gilmour and driver by Bob Meek. Funny Cars including Nathan Sitko, Trevor Lebsack, Rory Chistianson, Dany Fillion, John Evanchuk, and Kevin Therres. Shawn Nault from Alaska is expected as are Washington and Oregon drivers Forrest LeBlanc, Kim and Randy Parker and possibly John Weaver.

Racing on Saturday and Sunday also includes all the sportsman classes as they challenge for the National Open series titles. It is a five race series with events at Ashcroft, Bremerton, Mission and the finally at Prince George in two weeks.

So far in the classes a couple locals are in the chase for class titles and they include John Evans in his Lucas Oil SpeedZone Magazine sponsored Top Comp dragster John leads by 10 points over Scott Taylor. In Super Comp, Rick Dearinger leads Abbotsford's Cory Thompson by a single point. Cory is also in second place in the Stock/Super Stock combo. He trails Don Elgin in that class. Victoria's Ed Hutchinson leads in Super Gas, Bob Munoz is on top in Super Street, John Young leads Jim Behnke in Super Pro, Zach Craig is up on John Korfiatis by two points in Pro, Don Elgin also leads in Sportsman and Milo Bennett is tied for the lead with Jim Sidley in Bike/Sled. In the two Jr. classes, Tanis Brown is in front in Thunder and Gary Howe Jr. leads in Lightning. Go here for all points for all classes.

Mission weekend gallery is here including bracket winners from Saturday, CPSA, and other shots.

May 16, 2004 Dean Peterson doubled up in Super Gas at Mission Raceway on the weekend, winning both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, he defeated Stefan Kondolay and Sunday he got the win over Glen Iggulden when Glen red lit. The two wins give him a big lead in the Super Gas standings. John Lackie got the win in Super Street over Brian Engelking on Sunday. On Saturday, Lackie went to the semi finals so he takes a one round lead over Ray Carlson who had a runner-up and and semi final finish in the double header. In the Bracket classes, starting with Jr. Dragster, Josh Mellof defeated sister Julien in the all Mellof final round. The winner's circle included dad Joe, who won in the Canada West Doorslammer's first race of the year. In Bike, Stuart Kienas is walking away with the series as he collected his third or fourth win of the season. He also won on Saturday. Keith Newport was the runner-up. Super Shifter ran on Sunday, and Tim Elford driving his 12 second 5.0 litre 'Stang defeated Gene Kirner in his eight second 66 Mustang. Lorne Ridley after cutting nothing worse than a .042 light through elimination's, decided to give Steve Volk an easy win in Sportsman, when he went a "Gallant" like (if you read my Top Alcohol Zone, you would know what a "Gallant" is), .127 at the tree. Sorry Lorne, I just had to give you the gears buddy. In Hot Rod, Joe Fisher was the third guy to double up on the weekend, taking the Sunday win over Ron Yaroshuk. 2003 Super Pro Champion Warren Jacobson got his second win of the year, defeating Brandon Spitali, when Brandon went .003 red. In the 57 car Pro field, Cory Thompson continued his hot streak in the "E" Stocker, defeating Ray Bollinger in the sixth and final round. I'll have the points up later in the week. The next race at MPR is in two weeks when the CMDRA comes to town. The next bracket event is not until the last weekend of June.

May 15, 2004 Saturday winners at MRP's double header weekend include, SpeedZone Magazine's Brittany Sibley in Jr. Dragster. Other winners are: Bill Grover in Super Pro, Chris Stone in Pro, Chris Brandt in Sportsman, Stu Kienas in Bike, Dean Peterson in Super Gas, Dan Parsons in Super Street and Joe Fisher in Hot Rod. Lucas Oil Canada West Doorslammers are covered in the door zone.

May 13, 2004 What a sad deal this is. Rod and Ross Souza's weekend at Mission was okay, but the tow home was not. Just outside Everett, the gooseneck part of their trailer caught on fire and did serious damage to the trailer the gorgeous Super Gas Corvette as well as damage to the Super Comp Dragster (not as bad, mostly water) and alot of the stuff in the trailer. Thank god, the Souza's were not hurt, and the cars can be replaced, but it is going to cost alot. If you can help out in any way contact me, at least the Canadian racers and we will try and put a fund together. I am doing this without talking to them, but I am sure it will be appreciated. Their email address if you wish to get in touch with them directly is: Rossfife@aol.com. Let's help them out.

Here are a few pictures of the damage. Sorry for the quality.
