Sunday eliminations

(Jeffery and Murdoch photos)

TAD

What a weekend at MRP. TAD eliminations were outstanding! After qualifying, a number of scenarios could come to fruition, but most spectators were partial to the Shawn Cowie winner's circle. And he certainly had to be a favorite. Easily the most consistent car on the property, with five 5.30 runs in testing and qualifying (including four 5.37's), and with exactly the same weather on Sunday. The shocking 5.36 by Mike Johnson, after three earlier events of struggling, even with tune-up assistant from Duane Shields and Dana Hopewell (a 5.20 performer this year), had to bode well for the A/Fuel fans.

In round one..................The first pairing was Cowie and Bart, a definite david vs delila match-up. The Gilmour team had to be excited about making eliminations, but they also are on a mission to get their TAD consistently in the 5.50 range and quicker, without mechanical issues. This one was over very quickly, as Shawn had over a tenth at the tree on top of the performance advantage. The final results was a 5.31@270 for Cowie and an engine expiring 7.88 for Ashley Bart. One down, two to go for Cowie. The next pair saw two A/Fuel face off. Gregg Lawrence was in for Kim Parker, as she spun a main bearing in her qualifying attempt, and they did not get repairs done. On paper, this one was another man vs boy race, but with A/Fuel cars, you just never know. Brandon got the jump on Gregg by .03, and never looked back, as he went 5.43/261 (not the number they were hoping for). Gregg smoked the tires (below) at the hit and then pedaled the car, and when he did the front wheels starting to climb, so he pedaled it again, it hooked up and he went through the 1320 with a 6.56@252mph.

Severance took on Hegge in the third pairing, and this one wound up not quite as one sided as the first two, but it was still over a car length at the stripe, as Severance ran his best et of the weekend ,and also had a tenth on the starting line. A .05 activated 5.33@265 was more than enough for Hegge who ran a a career best 5.40/266. The final pair saw #4 and #5 face off, Davis vs Carlson. Dale a veteran in the TAD class, was real sharp on the tree with a .04 advantage on the starting line. Davis' car was hopped up and he was steadily gaining on Carlson but he fell just short, running 5.437 to a 5.466 for Carlson. The margin at the finish line was 1/100th of a second. About two feet. Very close.........

Round two.................. One A/fuel car was left and the Johnson A/Fuel dragster would take on their old family dragster, driven by........wait for it, Mike's brother in law Dale Carlson A true family affair, as the uncle and veteran driver would face the nephew Brandon. What Sunday dinner talk, that one will be. Well, it was the elder statesman who got the best in what likely will become a regular occurrence (not a win by Dale all the time, just the two of them facing off on a regular basis here in Division Six.).

It was not what I expected to happen, but it was what in the back of my mind, hoped would occur, as car owner Hugh Ridley is a good friend of mine. What was the surprise in the win, was the performance of the Ridley car, as crew chief Jeff Johnsen found the magic tune-up, and they ripped off a career best (by a tenth) 5.37@264. Nephew Brandon dropped cylinders all the way down track and ran 6.00/219. To say the Ridley camp was excited is an understatement to say the least. The other semi was also a run for the ages, as Severance defending champion took on the home town hero, Shawn Cowie. Severance got the slight starting line advantage and held it until half track, after that it was all Bill Moore power, as Shawn caught the Federal Way driver and steadily pulled ahead. The scoreboards lit up to the tune of a career best and first time in the '20's, 5.290/271....................Wow, and, "the crowd went wild" (Bob Frey sorry, I had to take your guote), literally you could hear the fans screaming. Awesome is all I can say!

Final round..................... Looking back in the archives there has not been two BC based cars in the final round ever in the Top Alcohol classes at a Divisional or National event and here we had one, at it was in the home province as well. While the driver for the Ridley car was American, this is easily Dale's favorite track. It would all come down to whether or not Johnsen had more in his arsenal. As you know, based on the previous seven runs by the Cowie team, they for sure had another low '30 or better in that car. You could count on the driver having perhaps a couple hundredth on the Ridley side, but would that be enough? ............It would have been, if the car could have repeated its semi final run, as Dale was psychic on the tree, with a deep staged .003 light, Shawn was yawning at the tree, as he went .090. Lucky is almost the term you could give the Cowie team but in reality, the 5.37 by Carlson was a bit more out of left field than expected. The thing is a 5.40 would have given Carlson the win in the final, but he was loose and he pedaled the car and then scoreboard lit up to the tune of a 5.59/243. The other lane's scoreboard said..... you guessed it, a low 5.3, this time a 5.33@270 again. Victory went to the expected driver, but the way it all went down was certainly not what most pundits would have thought. My forecast (on this page scroll down) said that Cowie was the favorite, Carlson was #5 but as I stated, "had a legitimate shot of going a round or two". They took it one further and now there are two cars from the lower mainland with a solid chance at every event. ...............As guest Saturday announcer Bob Frey says............"Way Cool"

Carlson's car is well back behind Cowie.

These two pictures say it all

TAFC

Day four (counting the test Thursday) and everything was set in place the contestants were tuned up for what should be a very good day of motorsport racing. Another big crowd was on hand to witness what many anticipated would be a history making day, as many Canadian competitors in the TA classes were solidly in the field and were set to challenge for the Wallys. Round one of Funny Car was up first and Rob Atchison got the upset of the day, in one of the closest Funny Car races in recent memory. Rob got a tenth and a half at the starting line as Ken Webster in the Synoil Flopper forgot the Monster energy drink, Rob needed all but .002 of the advantage as he took the win with a 5.917 to Webster's quicker 5.780, a great win for Atchison, but Webster will know he let that one get away. Brian Hough the #1 qualifier was up against, no one, as only seven cars qualified,so he got the automatic bye run. He did not lay down though and ran his quickest et of the weekend, a very stout 5.62, just to put some fear into the rest of the field. John Evanchuk got an easy 5.75 win over a troubled Trevor Lebsack as he still after two test runs and three qualifiers, still could not manage the starting line as tire shake and then a blower lifting pedal job ended his weekend on a very troubled note. Back to the drawing board for the Slave Lake Alberta team. In the final pairing, Clint Thompson dispatched of a much quicker leaving Tim Nemeth, as the Miner Bros. racing engine finally got a solid lap down the 1/4 mile. Clint turned in a 5.64 to an engined wounding 7.28 for the Chilliwack based TDN team.

Round two...............Thompson the three time defending got the #2 qualifier Evanchuk. A tough task for the Red Wolf team they felt they were close to running in the 60's. John got a big jump on the starting line (.086), and held on for a .026 stripe, with his first 5.6 of the weekend, a 5.699 to a closing fast 5.639. To put it mildly, the team did go wild. Ruth Evanchuk looking in disbelief when she saw the win light in their lane. Hough got Atchison in the semis, and this one was not close, due to a red light by Atchison. His .093 red light and 5.797 252.45 would have fallen just .012 short if he had of gotten a perfect light. Hough was uncharacteristic snoozing on the line with a .121rt, but another solid mid 5.6, a 5.664 250.76 was more than enough and it gave him lane choice for the final round against his second Canadian opponent in a row John Evanchuk.

Final round.............The final was set with Canada vs US and the US driver having the decided edge in performance. The unpainted unsponsored Hough TAFC is looking not only for the win, as he wants another top ten finish nationally, a Division championship again and almost most importantly, a sponsor on the side of his car. This team deserves one for sure. For this weekend they had to settle on the win as his 0.098 activated 5.641 256.55 was too much for a red lighting -0.115 5.825 252.03 for Evanchuk. John got real loose just after the hit of the throttle and could not recover. The red light meant it did not really matter though.

Finally the Mission jinx for Hough is done, and his four round wins in the previous three years is almost doubled in just one event. The win puts Hough into the points lead in Division Six.

Saturday final qualifying

Qualifying was in a word, outstanding Saturday at Mission Raceway. Sunny skies, corrected air in the 1000 foot range and a large crowd were on hand to witness solid runs by most of the team in attendance. After Friday's first round, Shawn Cowie lead for the TADs and Brian Hough lead the TAFC contingent.

TAFC

Brian struggled a bit on Saturday as he shook and turned in a 5.71 the first Saturday run and then he went for broke in the final run and was real loose forcing him to shut down early. His 5.65 on Friday stood up for the #1 spot in the field. John Evanchuck improved from his 5.79 Friday as he was just a tick away from the 5.60's, with a 5.706 that was just ahead of Clint Thompson who went 5.708 in the final round of qualifying. #4 was Ken Webster, who shut off early on his second round lap, but he went 5.73 in the final session. Rob Atchison ended up #5 with a 5.77 at a career best speed on 252 mph. He has run a roots blown combination for his career in the IHRA. Tim Nemeth was the last driver to run in the 5's and he was a bracket racer. He went 5.81, 5.81 and 5.82 in qualifying good enough for #6. Trevor Lebsack was the final qualifier and he really struggled with his new screw blower. Even with veteran tuner Sean Brown assisting, he could not leave the starting line without severe tire shake and spin. His best et was a 6.20.

Final qualifying

1 7 Brian Hough, Junction City OR, '06 Monte Carlo 5.657 256.77 256.77
2 64 John Evanchuk, Edmonton AB, '02 Firebird 5.706 251.35 251.35
3 63 Clint Thompson, Klamath Falls OR, '06 Monte Ca 5.708 253.37 253.37
4 6843 Ken Webster, Red Deer AB, '06 Monte Carlo 5.735 252.88 252.88
5 3990 Rob Atchison, London ON, '06 Monte Carlo 5.779 253.59 253.59
6 68 Tim Nemeth, Chilliwack BC, '02 Camaro 5.811 248.20 248.31
7 6320 Trevor Lebsack, Slave Lake AB, '05 Camaro 6.200 179.82 214.54

Hough would get a first round bye run, Evanchuk would take on Lebsack, Thompson would battle Nemeth and Webster would go up against Rob Atchison.

TAD

The blown field was 11 strong, but two of the cars were basically done early. Leo Grocock, had major engine failure in the first run on Saturday as he was on a decent run until half track where the engine let go, after a rod failure. Bill Edwards who did not make Friday's session had an oil leak on Saturday's first lap and then in the final, he also had internals let go, ending his day after a 5.73 at 247. Gregg Lawrence is still struggling with the new A/Fuel nitro %, and his best was a 5.662 that put him in the first alternate spot in the field at #9. Kim Parker made just one run in qualifying, Saturday's first round, and she was on a good lap but rotating assembly issues did not allow her to try and improve on her 5.62/253 run. Ashley Bart made a career best run in Saturday's first session, as she ripped off a 5.56/241 that could have been a low 5.50 or possibly a 5.49, as she was off the throttle around 1200 feet. The team, thanks to photos supplied by SpeedZone, also found that her small stature caused her to back slightly off the loud pedal at the launch due to the "g" forces at the heat. They made a seat adjustment, and those issues were solved. The final round Saturday did not see an improvement, as the car slowed to a 5.80. Her 5.56 best put her in the #7 spot in the field. Doug Hegge made improvements throughout the weekend except for the final qualifier when he was shut off after the burnout. His best 5.48 run was good enough for #6 in the field. Dale Carlson made his best run in the first run Friday, as his 5.48 put him in the middle of the pack. Justin Davis made all three qualifying runs within .078 of each other with his best run also happening in Friday's first run. The 5.42 posted by the Steve and Patti Federlin tuned Digger was good enough for #4. His opponent would be Dale Carlson. Joey Severance is part of the previous pattern, as his Friday run, a 5.408, was also his best qualifying effort, and that put him #3 in the field. His first round opponent would be Doug Hegge. The biggest move in qualifying came for a team that was do for something good to happen to them this season. Brandon Johnson in the Johnson family dragster, nailed the final qualifier beside Shawn Cowie, who was the leader until that final lap. After talking to Mike throughout the weekend, thought they were on to something and he improved on every lap, and it capped off with a solid 5.360/263 that just edged out Shawn Cowie who was right beside him all the way down the track in the final session. Cowie's best in qualifying was a 5.371. He went 5.374 in the final session. Shawn Cowie stayed in the 5.30's throughout qualifying, and actually ran 5.37's in all three rounds of qualifying, a 5.371, a 5.372 and a 5.374. Talk about bracket racing. Cowie would face Bart in round one and Johnson would face Kim Parker.

Team event wrap ups

Cowie Racing Weekend Wrap-up

Third year TAD driver Shawn Cowie and the Cowie Racing team capped off one of the best Divisional event weekends ever held at Mission Raceway. Fantastic weather, good crowds all three days, an increase in car counts despite the economic climate, and a final round in TAD against a fellow Canadian owned car.
In what good be called one of the most consistent dominating performance in recent memory by a supercharged TAD, Shawn ripped through the field on Sunday with three runs quicker that 5.35. In round one Shawn faced off against sophomore. He easily defeated Bart with the quickest run of the weekend a 5.31@270 to Ashley's blower banging 7.88.
In round two he would face off against the guy who defeated him in the final last year, Division champ Joey Severance. Shawn wanted to show he could match up with Severance not only in performance (which he has done in spades) but at the tree as well. Last year, he lost on a holeshot, but in the last six or seven races, he has been on his game. Severence went 5.33 in round one, so it would be a great race.
Severance got a slight edge, .062 to .076, but from there it was all over. Shawn and tuner Bill Moore, got all their ducks in a row, and Shawn blasted to a career best et, a track record BAD et of 5.290@271mph. Severance was close, but his 5.374@264 was ½ a car length back at the finish line. The weight was off the team's shoulders, as the 5.2 was finally on the scoreboard!
The final round would be history making in Canadian drag racing, as it would pit not only two Canadian based cars in the final, but two BC cars, and to be more precise, two cars that were based less than 50 miles apart. Chilliwack's Hugh Ridley's TAD would face Burnaby based Ron Cowie's TAD in an all BAD final round. Driver Dale Carlson went a career best 5.37 in his semi final round win against Brandon Johnson.
The final was a lot closer for the first 300 feet than Shawn would have liked, as Carlson had an eye dropping .003 light to Shawn's lazy .090, but from 300 feet on, it was all Cowie, as Carlson's car fell off the pace, and Shawn's kept on trucking, running 5.330 with another 270 mph speed on the reader board. The 5.597/243 by Carlson was well back at the stripe.
The home town win, the 5.2 et and the 85 points on the board, all made this weekend's event, one to remember.
Shawn and Dad Ron want to thank their sponsors Mundies Towing, United Petroleum, Lordco Auto Parts and Kendall Oil. The crew did an awesome job all weekend long and they include crew chief/tuner Bill Moore, Harry Campbell, Mike Bayko, Shirleen Moore and Taylor Heritage.

Synoil Racing TAFC weekend wrap up

While Ken Webster and the Synoil TAFC team did make the field at this weekend's divisional, they will head back to Alberta knowing they let one slip away from them.
After qualifying #4 in the field they had lane choice against #5 Rob Atchison in round one. Ken and co crew chiefs Ryan and Wally Protz were looking for a low 5.70 or high 5.60, as conditions were identical to Saturday's. The car did run a 5.7, a 5.78 but Ken was real late on the tree, an uncharacteristic .208 compared to Atchison's .069. Ken continually gained on Rob, but he fell short by the slimmest of margins, a scant .002 (around 6 inches).
"I really let the team and myself down. I can't explain why I was late, stated Ken after the race. It is real frustrating knowing you should have the race in the bag and then this happens. Oh well, we will go into the next event at Spokane and put the past to rest, and go kick some butt".
Three divisionals are next on the schedule, and then the Seattle National. The team then really hits the road after that as they travel to Montana before going further east to Indy for the US nationals and maybe Iowa for the divisional there.
The team would like to thank their sponsors including Synoil, Waylan transport, Landale Signs and Neon, Southgate and Hogeson Pontiac, North Gate Industries KEW Services and all their other assoc. sponsors, for all their support.

TDN Constructors Group Weekend recap

Tim and Nancy Nemeth are really looking forward to their first event of the year this weekend at their home track, Mission Raceway for the BC Lordco Nationals. The local fan favourites from Chilliwack BC have been very busy over the winter getting the Camaro ready for the 2009 season. They made a few changes to the combination over the winter, and are also busy working on their new Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car. They are hoping to debut it for their national open in July. For this weekend they will concentrate on dialing in the new combination in the Alky flopper. "We are trying a few different things to make the car more consistent and quicker. It will take a solid and strong performance for us to compete against the likes of Clint Thompson and Brian Hough". With perfect weather at the sea level track we should be able to improve on our career bests.
On Friday, Tim ran a solid 5.81@246 to put him in the #4 spot in the field. It was a real good starting point for the first run of the year. In round two, only a slight improvement to a 5.811@248, but he dropped down to the #5 spot in the field. For the final round, they got more aggressive on the starting line, but the car spun the tires a bit, and the timers stopped at a 5.821@248. Very consistent overall, but they really wanted to run a 5.70 in the last lap. If you could dial in a TAFC, we would be looking pretty solid heading into eliminations. Tim will face Clint Thompson in round one.
In round one, Tim had a great .020 light and looked to be on a strong run when the car fell on its face and broke. Tim coasted down track and could only watch Clint blow by.
"It started off great, but the valve train let go 2 seconds into the run, and that was all she wrote, stated Tim after the run. We will go back and look at the data and take the engine apart and get it ready for the next event".
Tim and Nancy would like to thank our sponsors TDN Constructors group, Demidoff Equipment, Barry Hamel Equipment, Corporate Electric, Pennzoil, Chicago Pheumatic, and Jet Equipment Canada
Tim and Nancy would also like to thank the crew including veteran Top Alcohol owner/tuner Ken Sitko, Fred Voller, Marc Campbell, Greg Edinger, Pete Shuttleworth, Lance Nemeth and Annika Nemeth.

Red Wolf Racing event wrap up

A solid weekend that exceeded expectations overall, as the Alberta's Red Wolf team went to the TAFC final round at the Mission LODRS this past weekend. After qualifying #2 on Saturday, the team went into eliminations cautiously optimistic they could reach the final round. In round one, owner/driver John Evanchuck faced off against another Alberta driver, Trevor Lebsack. John was real late on the starting line, but Lebsack has been struggling all weekend, and the Red Wolf Flopper, caught his opponent by 250 feet. John rolled to victory with a 5.75@252 mph.
In round two he would face Clint Thompson, who was looking for a four-peat at this event. John made up for his late light in round one, with a great .058 rt compared to Clint's late .144 John needed all his advantage, as Clint ran his quickest et of the weekend, a 5.639@256. John Also ran his quickest et of the weekend, a 5.699@252 to take the stripe by .03.
A final round showing in his first race of the year, awesome!
The final round would be a challenge as he was up against Brian Hough who had his car on a string all weekend long. He never went slower than a 5.66 all weekend long.
The final would be over on the starting line as John could not hold his car back, and he red lit away any chance. The car fell shook bad down low as well, and he had to pedal it to a 5.82@252 (again). Hough ran 5.64@256 to take the win.
"We are really happy with our opening weekend of the year. The goal was to run in the 5.60's and we did that in round two of eliminations, we went to the final, which s always the goal, but against the likes of Thompson, Webster and Hough that is a tough task.
The team performed awesome! We have a few new guys on the crew and they all worked real well together.
Kudo's to Crew Chief Bill Moore, who had not only our car in the final but Shawn Cowie's TAD as well.
"He did a great job going from car to car, and getting both to the final is a credit to his ability, for that we thank him, stated John after the race".
John and his wife Ruth would again like to thank their all their sponsors, Big Eagle Services, Aqua Industrial, RedL (the hose people), Lucas Oil, Husky Oil, Campbell Automotive, Baystar Electrical services, DuraGuard Fence, Eskimo Excavators, Cougar Paint and Collison, Fleet Brake, Mirror Images, Jet Equipment Canada and CMax.

Turned-Up Racing weekend wrap up

Doug Hegge and his Turned-up racing A/Fuel Dragster had a solid opening weekend in Divisional competition this past weekend at Mission Raceway Park.
A couple goals they had in mind to start the weekend fell into place, including qualifying for the event, and improving on not only their season's best marks but also their career bests.
They qualified solidly in the field with a 5.48@261. It put Doug #6 in the field. He would take on Joey Severance in round one.
Doug was second off the line, and actually had to pedal the car as it started to rattle thiretires and got loose are 180 feet. It hooked back up though, and started charging real hard from ½ track on. Doug got to the finish line second, but the timers came up with a solid 5.405@266 mph. Career marks in both speed and mph.
"Running under the new rules makes it difficult for sure, and we did not know going into this event if we could match our previous career marks of a 5.47. But great weather and a great track made our job easier and it all fell into place. A win would have been nice, but many of our objectives were met.
Doug would like to thank the sponsors, BrightSign (a Ruku company) a next generation digital sign controller. Check out their web site www.brightsign.biz. Also, Radford Trucking, Total Impact Wear, Spitzer Composites and Goodson.
Special thanks go out to the Reichert family for all their assistance and guidance.
The crew including Randy, Casey, Tim, Kym, Rhett and Dad all worked their butts off all weekend long.
Next up for the team are back to back Divisionals at Spokane and Seattle in the middle of June. Spokane is higher in altitude and Seattle is similar to Mission, so it will be challenge to adapt to the different conditions. They are really look forward to both events in their home state.

Friday round one qualifying

Perfect weather greeted the teams and fans to day one of competition at the BC Lordco Nationals LODRS event at Mission Raceway.

There were no real surprises for any of the cars in the TA classes Friday, as all the expected leaders were where they should be, with one or two exceptions. Shawn Cowie leads with his 269 mph bracket car, as he turned in a solid and expected 5.37@269 mph blast, to sit atop the leaderboard in TAD. Right behind him is Joey Severance who ran 5.40@260. Justin Davis is #3 after a 5.42@262. The only mild surprise was Brandon Johnson who had a minor 2 dollar mechanical issue preventing that team from making a full lap. The throttle stop that is used with an A/Fuel car on the burnout, off came loose and that created a vacuum of sorts around the butterflies in the injector. The vacuum effect did not allow the throttle to open up, and he was forced to coast down the 1/4 at an idle. A surprise entrant is Kim Parker who arrived late Friday, so she will battle on Saturday. One local team owner was very happy with the performance of his TAD, as the Hugh Ridley owned BAD driven by Dale Carlson went a career best 5.48 at 259 to sit #4 after one round. Doug Hegge in his A/Fuel car is #5 with a 5.53 and Gregg Lawrence is #6 with a 5.66.

Leo Grocock and Ashley Bart both had issues at the starting line, as Leo was a bit late getting RPM's up and Ashley got hers up real early, making their side by side look a bit strained so to speak. Ashley was up way too long, and she managed to go only 80 feet before tire shake and an early click off. Grocock, got loose at 300 feet getting close to the center line and he also was forced to lift early. Bill Edwards Jr. did not make a lap Friday, as he was waiting on parts to arrive, and they got there Friday afternoon. Don St. Arnaud, the rookie out of Alberta, will not make any attempts this weekend, as he had a few minor glitches which will keep him out until the Spokane race. "Ya, we had a few issues with tech, which included the SFI certification of our Impact Fire Suit (which were recalled earlier this year, and we did not get notification). Also the new 6 point belts did not arrive until late Friday. We could have borrowed a suit from another team who had a spare, but it did not fit right and I was very uncomfortable in it, so we will regroup and make the debut in a month. A bit frustrating for sure but as a new driver I just want to be comfortable in my brand new car". Good decision for sure by the new team.

TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER
1) Shawn Cowie, Delta, B.C., 5.371 seconds, 269.94 mph
2) Joey Severance, Spanaway, Wash., 5.408, 260.64
3) Justin Davis, Murrieta, Calif., 5.426, 262.92
4) Dale Carlson, Yelm, Wash., 5.484, 258.47
5) Doug Hegge, Vancouver, Wash., 5.539, 261.39
6) Gregg Lawrence, Salem, Ore., 5.662, 252.10
7) Brandon Johnson, Shelton, Wash., (no time)

I say the bump in TAD will be a low 5.5

For the floppers, Brian Hough's brand new car is a bracket like performer, that goes straight and almost boring unlike many Funny Cars out there. He went 5.65@256 to lead the field. Clint Thompson is a half tenth back after a 5.71@251. John Evanchuk is #3 with a 5.79 and Tim Nemeth made his best run in a while, a solid opening lap of 5.81@246. Ken Webster shook and pedaled to 6.05 and just ahead of him was Rob Atchison who did the same to the tune of a 6.01@242. "Ya, this screw blower deal is a great way to make a tuner look dumb in a hurry", stated Rob after his pedal job. "A screw blower makes a car react way different than a roots blower, he stated. We have a way better idea now what to do". Look for that team as well as Webster to make huge gains on Friday. Trevor Lebsack is also struggling with the new screw. They are really having issue on the stating line. Hopefully they get is sorted out as well.

1) Brian Hough, Junction City, Ore., '06 Monte Carlo, 5.657 seconds, 256.77 mph
2) Clint Thompson, Klamath Falls, Ore., '06 Monte Carlo, 5.748, 251.53
3) John Evanchuk, Edmonton, Alb., '02 Firebird, 5.793, 245.23
4) Tim Nemeth, Chilliwack, B.C., '02 Camaro, 5.812, 246.71
5) Rob Atchison, London, Ont., '06 Monte Carlo, 6.015, 242.00
6) Ken Webster, Red Deer, Alb., '06 Monte Carlo, 6.056, 227.38
7) Trevor Lebsack, Slave Lake, Alb., '05 Camaro, 12.462, 68.59

Unless Randy Parker pulls his TAFC out of the trailer (no plans at press time), the top six will be well into the 5.70's and quicker with Lebsack as the only wild cars. If Sean Brown gets it sorted out in the clutch department, it will be a 5.80 or better seven car field.

Rounds two and three go Saurday at 2 and 4.

Cowie Racing.
Mission LODRS event preview and qualifying results

This weekend's Lucas Oil BC nationals event is a big one in the schedule for Shawn Cowie.
It is his home event, it is the firt event in Division Six and it is an event he realy wants to win. He has been the runner-up the last two seasons and to win at home is a big deal. Recent memory says there has not been a winner of this 16 year old event to come from the home province. Those are all big reasons to want the win.
The biggest reason though is the team's aspirations to win the division and to challenge for the National title. If they can eke out the win against some very tough opponent he can vault into the # two spot in the national standings (pending other opponent's results at the other two divisional event being contested this weekend back East). Even with a win, if they are lucky enough, t will be a huge uphill battle all season long, as there are at least ten solid teams out there who want it just as bad as Shawn.
With great sea level air another goal is to get the car into the 5.20's for the first time. "I'm pretty excited to be at our home track and I am stoked about our 5.33/271 from the Thursday test. That really bodes well for this weekend for sure.

On Friday after round one of qualifying, Shawn went 5.37@229 to site #1."We have been experimenting with a new Injector hat from Jeff Burnett. It works great, but there is a slight flatness issue that we have to get sorted out to make a better seal, according to crew chief Bill Moore.
For round to, they put their proven PSI hat back on the car, and the result was almost identical to round one, a 5.372@268.09, within a thousandth. For the final round in the heat of the day, a couple more hunderedth would be good, but the car was like a bracket racer, running another, 537, this time with a four. Unfortunately, was Brandon Johnson went 5.36 in the last session beside Shawn, putting him into the #1 spot, dropping Shawn down to #2. He will face Ashley Bart in round one.
Cowie Racing would like to thank their sponsors, including Mundies Towing, Lordco Auto Parts, United Petroleum and Kendall Oil.
Ron and Shawn want to thank their hard working crew on the team including crew chief/tuner Bill Moore, Harry Campbell, Mike Bayko, Shirleen Moore and Taylor Heritage.

Doug Hegge and his A/Fuel team out of Vancouver Washington are excited to get to the sea level air here at Mission Raceway this weekend for the BC Lordco Nationals. It is the first stop in the Division Six Lucas Oil series. After qualifying at three National events earlier this year, the team wants to put up some Divisional points on their scoreboard. With the new rules implemented over the winter for the A/Fuel cars, the team is still working on their revised tune-up. They smoked the tires in their first test run Thursday and then ran a 5.60@ 261 to set them up for Friday's first qualifying session. In that first qualifier, they went 5.53/261 their quickest lap under the new rules. "We were pretty happy with that run and we feel we can improve and get well into the 5.40's on Saturday", stated Hegge Friday evening.
Doug was close in his prediction for Saturday, as in the second round of qualifying they went out and improved to a 5.48@ 260 but it was not enough to move up the ladder. The final session was in the heat of the day so the methodical task of inching forward with the tune-up would be difficult.
The car did the burnout, but mechanical issues forced Doug to shut off the car. The end results was the #6 spot and a first round matchup with 2008 division champion Joey Severance.
The Technology based TAD team is happy to have a new tech based sponsor on board for a number of events this season. BrightSign (a Ruku company) are the next generation digital sign controllers. Go to their web site www.brightsign.biz to see what they are all about. Along with Bright Sign, The team is happy to have Radford Trucking, Total Impact Wear, Spitzer Composites, Goodson and especially the entire Reichert family for all their guidance.

Red Wolf Racing
Mission LODRS event preview and qualifying results

It's race #1 for John and Ruth Evanchuk and the Red Wolf Top Alcohol Funny Car team. The Edson Alberta based team was suffering from Cabin or Snow Fever up until they loaded up their Firebird just this week. Snow hit the Rocky Mountains this week, and they could not wait to get out of Dodge so to speak. The team made a few changes to their BAE combo over the winter in hopes of finding up a few hundredths in performance. They know if they want to challenge in the tough TAFC class in Division Six against the likes of Clint Thompson and Brian Hough, they have to be on their "A' game. With a career best, 5.68, they really want to see low 60's at over 250 mph on sea level tracks like the event this weekend at Mission Raceway. And if looks translate to performance, the second generation awesome paint job from their sponsor Cougar Paint and collision, this car will fly. "Ya we really like to run here, and our very versatile crew Chief Bill Moore has the Cowie TAD he tunes dialed in, so he feels he can do the same for our flopper". The plan this year is to run as many divisionals as time and work allows, and to hit a couple Nationals as well. If we can improve on our #4 placing in the division from last year we will be very happy.
In round one of qualifying a low 5.70 was what the team was shooting for, as it was the first run of the season. They underestimated the track a bit and the car shook but it was still a 5.70, just at the top end, a 5.793@245mph
On Saturday they got more aggressive, and the car looked to be on a good lap, the results, was a 5.706/251. "It should have been a mid '60, I missed the 1-2 shift point. The new gearing had the car go out so far in 1st I couldn't wait any longer,, John stated". According to the data it would have been a 5.64. The final round of qualifying did not turn out as planned as the car started creeping when the rpm's were brought up and the car rolled the beams, giving John no time. The final result was the #2 spot and a face off against another Alberta driver, Trevor Lebsack.
John and wife Ruth would like to thank their sponsors Big Eagle Services, Aqua Industrial, RedL (the hose people), Lucas Oil, Husky Oil, Campbell Automotive, Baystar Electrical services, DuraGuard Fence, Eskimo Excavators, Cougar Paint and Collison, Fleet Brake, Mirror Images, Jet Equipment Canada and CMax.
They would like to thank all the crew including Crew Chief Bill Moore, Rick Strong, Todd Hanna, Al Stacey, Mark and Don Campbell, JD Dennis, Shirleen Moore and Alan Heshke

Synoil Racing TAFC
Mission LODRS event preview and qualifying results

Ken Webster and the driver of the Synoil TAFC has had a pretty exciting first year so far in his rookie season. He has made the highlight reels and accomplished more in the first half of the season than many do in their career. At race #1 in Pomona, The team ran well into the 5.60's including a 5.61 best and went all the way to the semi final round where he lost a very close race to past world champ Tony Bartone. From there it was the Lucas Oil event at Vegas where the blower banged the burst panel so violently, it blew the body off and into a kazillion pieces so to speak. The new Impala body is on the car this weekend for this weekend's Division Six LODRS BC Lordco Nationals at Mission Raceway. The sea-level track is just the place they want to be as they are working hard to get the car into the 5.50's. It likely will take a number close to that to defeat defending champion Clint Thompson or Division champ Brian Hough. "We know it will be tough but in order to challenge for the division title you have to be able to take on the best in the division. We will be very aggressive this weekend to try and accomplish our goals".
They will run the entire Division Six schedule (and perhaps a couple out of Divisional events) as well as Indy, Seattle, Vegas and the Pomona national events to complete the season.
In the first qualifier Friday afternoon,, Ken got real loose and had to pedal the car, turning in a 6.05.
On Saturday, The car was on a real strong pass, but right at half track, the valve train failed and he coasted through (no major damage) to a mid 6. It was down to one shot to put up a solid number. Ryan had the car set up to run a mid to low 5.70, and that it just what it did, a 5.73@252, good enough for #4 and a Match-up against Rob Atchison.
Ken and team owner Geoff Goodwin would like to thank their sponsors including Synoil, Waylan transport, Landale Signs and Neon, Southgate and Hogeson Pontiac, North Gate Industries KEW Services and all their other assoc. sponsors, for all their support.
The crew includes Crew Chief Wally Protz, tuner Ryan Protz and (Car Chief) Tom Goodwin. Also thanks to all the part time crew who work their butts off at various events.

Thursday Top Alcohol testing

Preview and the ``Zone`` odds maker follow Thursday testing photos.

What we have here are shots from Thursday test session that would rival many events performances on race day. 5.30`s 5.40`s and 5.40`s by the TADs and 5.60s by TAFCs. Pretty impressive. And couple teams were out for the first time with screw blowers after the idiotic decision by the IHRA to end the Alcohol Funny Car class. These shots are y Bill Jeffery and Dean Murdoch. Bill is the pro between these two and has supplied SpeedZone with more great photos over the years than perhaps anyone. Murdoch is just getting used to the new Nikon, but seems to in the the right place at the right time on occasion. 40 years around the sport gives him intuition on drivers he has gotten to know, not only on a professionally but a personal level as well. The first 16 shots alternate between Bill and Dean on the same run by the driver.

Cowie goes 5.33 at 271 in 500 feet of air right out of the box. Murdoch photo
Welcome to my first photo blog for 2009. My first major race of the season is the Division 6 points race at Mission Raceway Park. Thursday is a test and tune event and the day opened with beautiful blue skies and almost perfect temperatures. The pits had already filled nicely by early Thursday morning and there was a steady stream of arrivals throughout the day. By evening the pits were bursting at the seams as racers from all over the Pacific Northwest converged on a facility blessed with a perfect weather forecast for the entire weekend.

Local favorite Shawn Cowie was back testing Thursday and he didn't disappoint. Shown here with ace tuner Bill Moore on his first burn out of the day. His first pass was a solid 5.33 shot at a booming 271 mph which saw Shawn almost cross the centerline at the stripe. His second pass later in the day was a 5.38.

Brian Hough certainly set the standard for what will be a very stout alcohol funny car field. His first hit was a 5.65 pass at over 255 mph and he followed it up with a second 5.6 second pass.
Division 6 rival Brandon Johnson struggled to score a 5.4 second pass on only 6-1/2 cylinders Thursday afternoon. Many teams wished they could struggle this well.

3 time IHRA World Champion Rob Atchison arrived at MRP with his new Ace Manufacturing sponsored Monte Carlo SS. Rob will be campaigning this car in Division 6 as well as his other car in Eastern Canada.

Trevor Lebsack hiked the front end way up on his second pass of the day. I only captured him part way up but some of the other photogs caught him higher

Clint Thompson launches hard at MRP. He is looking for a four peat at this event. No one has ever done that in any class at this event. Brian Hough (and others) will have a lot to say about it.

Late arrival Justin Davis only managed one pass on Thursday. Unfortunately his blower belt came off so he coasted to the early turn-off at the top end where I was able to get this shot. It is really tough getting out of these machines!
Local favorite Tim Nemeth had a transmission lock-up on him on his first pass. His second pass saw a 5.88 second run but he melted a few pistons on the run. ``Note to driver``, It was only supposed to be a half track hit.

Doug Hegge blistered the tires on his first lap. On this the second one the slicks stuck and he went 5.61 at 261
Jim Obalek was getting his final licencing runs completed in the Hugh Ridley owned Dale Carlson usually driven TAD.
Ken Webster shook hard at 200 feet. This team wants a 5.50 bad
John Evanchuck is sporting a new paint scheme and a whole new engine combination. Sharing Bill Moore tuning with Shawn Cowie, the Red Wolf Pontiac clicked off at around 800 feet and still ran 5.96 seconds. John is confident that they will run in the 5.6's this weekend

Mission Lordco Nationals preview....

What can we expect this weekend?
TAD& TAFC ....... "Getting in the Zone" tipster

The first Divisional event in Division Six this year, but a number of teams have already got their whistle whet ..... So to speak.
What we will look at are the entered competitors for this weekend's event, who is not, who is not and who will reign supreme.

TAFC

Murdoch, Jeffery, Johnson, Ogonoski and King photos

Even though the pre entry list says only eight cars, this will be a tough field. Here is the list (in no particular order): John Evanchuk, Dave Germain, Brian Hough, Trevor Lebsack, Tim Nemeth, Clint Thompson, Ken Webster and Rob Atchison.

Pick #1................. I know Brian Hough won last weekend at the Woodburn Opener match race, and he was in an unpainted Impala SS, but is it a whole new car or just a body. It should not really matter though as he is always tough at Mission but the last couple years he has been snake bit by a guy by the name of Clint Thompson. Clint has flat dominated this race. The Fontana (Miner) combination work really well in the good air at MRP (ask Severance). In the few races he has been at this year though Clint has struggled a bit. One DNQ. Divisionally, he has one first round loss and two second round losses (at two nat'l's). He loves this track though and I think he will stay to the course and wind up in the final round (go back to the last two year's tune-ups Clint and it is a guarantee). ........Odds........4-1

Brian Hough.........He has been THE best Division Six competitor overall since Bucky Austin left, and even during Bucky's reign he was right on his butt. Three top tens in the last three year nationally, including #3 (one round back of #2) in 2006. He just struggles here at MRP. Two second round losses and one Runner-up in the last three years. I know he wants this one bad, but can he put all his ducks in a row?...............Odds........9-2

John Evanchuk........Maybe a bit of a surprise high pick, for some pundits. But he has two things in his favor. This is like his home track in the NHRA, and he has a great tuner in his back pocket. Bill Moore tuner of one of the top five TAD's in the country has been his tuner for five years (and he had a little help for some of that from the (Hitter). and they improved their arsenal over the winter parts wise. Bill is not one to toot his own horn, but he can tune a race car. John has been in the high 5.60's in the car, and this weekend, they should be at least a half tenth quicker. John is a decent leaver as well, so the top Canadian this weekend in the flopper class should be the 'Red Wolf".......Odds........... 5-1.

Ken Webster....... The next Canadian car in the field and Rookie Driver Webster has one bad car. Literally it was bad earlier this year when it banged the blower so bad it disintegrated the body at half track like a fuel funny car. But in amongst the excitement the team with the Protz duo act tuning the car, have gone out and run low 5.60s (at his debut no less). Will the team repeat their fortune from Pomona in their home country? If they return to that form, they will reach the final, but I think they will be a semi finalist for sure...........Odds........6-1

Tim Nemeth..........Truly the home town boy, Tim and wife Nancy have been local favorites for as long as there has been divisionals at MRP. Their best ever finish here was a runner-up against the hitter five or six years ago. Since that time the team has been mired in the low 5.80's. It really is going to take a 5.60 if you want a chance to compete in the later rounds. I see Tim running in the 5.70's............Odds.........7-1

Rob Atchison...........This is a scary pick for sure. On paper, the team out of Ontario (longest drive for any team EVER here for a divisional). The three time IHRA world champion is here thanks to the support of ACE Manufacturing, is really in uncharted territory. After a decade of running a roots combination in IHRA competition, for the West Coast events they will run a screw blow on their Chevy powerplant. All I can say is today (during testing) will be the key to how well Rob and his dad can adapt to the new blower. He has competed twice this year back east with the primary car in roots trim. And went 248 mph. If he can dial in the free extra horsepower from a screw blower, then all best are off........Odds..........15-2

Trevor Lebsack..........Also a fairly scary pick. The Slave Lake Alberta driver is the second driver who is a long time IHRA competitor. This will be their first foray in the the dark side known as the "screw blower wars". The ace in the whole is Sean Brown is here to help them get on track. If looks good turn into performance on the track, then Trevor will be a finalist, as the car is the nicest looking flopper I think I have ever seen. Hopefully the team has gotten last year out of their system where anything that could go wrong did. If testing today goes in their favor then this will be a 5.70 car at least.......Odds.......8-1

Dave Germain.........I heard he might not be here this weekend due to a bit of a wall scraper last weekend, but I also hard it was not too bad, so hopefully the Washington driver will make it up here. Dave has a car on the verge. He has run solid 5.90, but their is lots of potential. A little bit of luck and a strong base line to the tune up and the team is really to take the next step. Hopefully they make the trek and are here for Friday......Odds......10-1

Will other cars show up? I hope one or two more do, if only to make the gys nere the bottom half of the field honest. Nathan Sitko, Leon Aines and Cal Tebb, where are you.

TAD

Photos courtesy Mark King, Dean Murdoch, Bill Jeffery and Bob Johnson

This one in my opinion is easier than the last couple years, and for one main reason........A couple of the top hitting A/Fuel teams are not expected to compete. That being said, it likely will be an event dominated by three Blown Alcohol Dragsters.

Shawn Cowie....... How can you not pick the BC based team as the favourite this weekend after their solid performances so far this season. The team has the highest average points per race of any team in the top team and they are #6 at the moment with 254 points. A win and they vault into #2 in the standings pending results from the Brainerd and Maple Grove LODRS events this weekend. They won two of the toughest Divisional events of the year with car counts in the 16 range and they included the toughest BAD's and A/Fuelers on the West Coast. The two events they did not win, they had bad luck not to go further. Home court advantage and two runner ups here in the last two years, last year against the guy who will challenge him this year. He badly wants to win this race. His rts have improved greatly since Sept. of last year......Odds.... 2-1

Joey Severance......... Winner here last year, but the team is a bit of an enigma, in their last five or six events. Joey Severance is one of the best leavers in the class, but the car (or Fontana bullet) has let them down. The car is usually in the 5.30's or low .40's at National and Divisional events, but the last few events (Pomona DNQ, Vegas Nat'l bottom half, Vegas div, #5 semi-finalist) have not been their best only one round win in the last three events. Mission is always good to the team so if they sort out their consistency they will be in the final round..........Odds......3-1

Justin Davis. The Federlin team has done quite well so far including a National event win at Vegas and two other second round finishes. Steve Federlin knows how to tune, and he knows how to get the most out of his drivers. The Impatience team has many wins at MRP, and Justin could put a chink in the two guy's armours above. .....Odds.....4-1

The next pick is tough as there are three or so teams who could be a semi finalist.
Brandon Johnson.....The Johnson clan had really struggled this year with the new A/Fuel rules. But, this is one of Mike's favourite tracks, and he and son Brandon are due to sort out the new rules. A couple scenarios could play into their performance as well. This is only supposition on my part, but could a vaunted tuner driver show up here just to give the Johnson's a hand. I think it is very possible if that tuner driver does not race at either Maple Grove or Brainerd this weekend. The weather is not forecasted to be real hot, just in the mid 70's, so air will correct below 1500 feet, and if Mike can't find a 5.40 in those conditions he could decide to sit out until he has secondary assistance. ....Odds 6-1

Dale Carlson...... It has been a long time (if ever) that there are two locally based teams in TAD who could make it to the semi finals. The Hugh Ridley owned, Dale Carlson driven TAD is team #2 with a legitimate shot to not only qualify but go a round or two. Dale is a very talented driver, and would like to show the Mission crowd that the Cowie team is not the only one who can make some noise. They have run 5.48 and Dale can cut .05 lights or better (just don't red light). With a bit weaker field that the last couple years, a high 5.40 will be right in the mix........Odds....13-2

Gregg Lawrence...... The Oregon A/Fuel team won last weekend at Woodburn, and if he has Bucky Austin in his corner this weekend (I am saying a 50/50 chance), they should run in the 40's at least. ....Odds.....7-1
Doug Hegge.... In his third season in an A/Fuel car, Doug has a solid braintrust helping him, in Bill Reichert. While Reichert is not going to be at the track with him (or is he?), the car runs well in the back half. He should run low 50's or a high 40, and if so he will qualify, and just possibly upset a top half qualifier.....Odds....8-1

Ashley Bart..... Yes there a few cars below Ashley on the list meaning the hard luck team out of Alberta are figured in the SpeedZone top eight list. I do think Ashley can qualify as the team has real good equipment, and had shown (based on their 5.60@ only 212 mph earlier this year) they can run competitively in the front half of the 1320. It is the back half they seem to have issues with. If the tune-up is aligned to a full 1320, you could see career numbers. Dare I say a 5.45-5.55 at over 248 mph. I sure hope they can, because their luck over the last couple years (primarily team owner Ken Gilmour's luck) has been a "glass half empty" deal..........Odds 17-2

Bill Edwards JR...... In all honesty this could be my favourite team in all of drag racing. Bill Edwards Sr. Is a legend in the North West. He has been doing this for real close to 5 decades. He had had six or seven different drivers in his cars, and he always does way more than his budget allows. I am hearing this is his final year of competing at this level, but I sure hope not. They are a team I want to do well, all the time, and they are a team who are right on the bubble for making the field. They need a solid 5.50 to make the field in my opinion, and if they do and can stay away from the top tree in the field until a later round, could there be a miracle by the River. I really hope so, but it is unfortunately not likely......Odds 9-1

Leo Grocock......My long time friend, and like Bill Edwards, if wishes could turn into performance, then Leo will not only make the field, but he will run in the 5.60's or better. In reality, the Mission based team just loves to come out and have fun, and not look stupid doing it. Two years ago, the team make 12 laps in a row, all respectable (in the 5.70's), without hurting anything. Last year they started out okay and then the bottom fell out at the end of the year. This year, we will know by Friday....Odds....10-1

Don St. Arnaud... Do not know anything about St. Arnaud. I hear a team will be out testing on Wednesday (tomorrow) maybe it is him, and if so, I can update his performance Wednesday

Update Thursday.......St. Arnaud will be a player. He has all the best parts and has an ACE in his camp. Automan Bob Ottow is the crew chief for the new team from Alberta. While Don has only a handful of laps on the car, with three or four runs here at Mission on Friday, he could very well run in the 5.50's or a lot better even. Ottow has tuned a couple cars in the 5.30's already this yea,r and this car has as good or better parts. Even a couple newly developed pieces as the technical guru is always on the edge of something radical. If the ducks are in a row, put this team in the top half on the field...........Odds ....range from a 5-1 to 8-1

That is what my thoughts are for this year`s Lordco Nationals. Just don`t take it to the bank.
If others are added to the list in the next couple days, I will add them to the list.
Ah, what the hell, bet the farm!!!!
