Sunday eliminations (Jeffery and Murdoch photos) TAD
What a weekend at MRP. TAD eliminations were outstanding! After qualifying, a number of scenarios could come to fruition, but most spectators were partial to the Shawn Cowie winner's circle. And he certainly had to be a favorite. Easily the most consistent car on the property, with five 5.30 runs in testing and qualifying (including four 5.37's), and with exactly the same weather on Sunday. The shocking 5.36 by Mike Johnson, after three earlier events of struggling, even with tune-up assistant from Duane Shields and Dana Hopewell (a 5.20 performer this year), had to bode well for the A/Fuel fans.
In round one..................The first pairing was Cowie and Bart, a definite david vs delila match-up. The Gilmour team had to be excited about making eliminations, but they also are on a mission to get their TAD consistently in the 5.50 range and quicker, without mechanical issues. This one was over very quickly, as Shawn had over a tenth at the tree on top of the performance advantage. The final results was a 5.31@270 for Cowie and an engine expiring 7.88 for Ashley Bart. One down, two to go for Cowie. The next pair saw two A/Fuel face off. Gregg Lawrence was in for Kim Parker, as she spun a main bearing in her qualifying attempt, and they did not get repairs done. On paper, this one was another man vs boy race, but with A/Fuel cars, you just never know. Brandon got the jump on Gregg by .03, and never looked back, as he went 5.43/261 (not the number they were hoping for). Gregg smoked the tires (below) at the hit and then pedaled the car, and when he did the front wheels starting to climb, so he pedaled it again, it hooked up and he went through the 1320 with a 6.56@252mph.
Severance took on Hegge in the third pairing, and this one wound up not quite as one sided as the first two, but it was still over a car length at the stripe, as Severance ran his best et of the weekend ,and also had a tenth on the starting line. A .05 activated 5.33@265 was more than enough for Hegge who ran a a career best 5.40/266. The final pair saw #4 and #5 face off, Davis vs Carlson. Dale a veteran in the TAD class, was real sharp on the tree with a .04 advantage on the starting line. Davis' car was hopped up and he was steadily gaining on Carlson but he fell just short, running 5.437 to a 5.466 for Carlson. The margin at the finish line was 1/100th of a second. About two feet. Very close.........
Round two.................. One A/fuel car was left and the Johnson A/Fuel dragster would take on their old family dragster, driven by........wait for it, Mike's brother in law Dale Carlson A true family affair, as the uncle and veteran driver would face the nephew Brandon. What Sunday dinner talk, that one will be. Well, it was the elder statesman who got the best in what likely will become a regular occurrence (not a win by Dale all the time, just the two of them facing off on a regular basis here in Division Six.).
It was not what I expected to happen, but it was what in the back of my mind, hoped would occur, as car owner Hugh Ridley is a good friend of mine. What was the surprise in the win, was the performance of the Ridley car, as crew chief Jeff Johnsen found the magic tune-up, and they ripped off a career best (by a tenth) 5.37@264. Nephew Brandon dropped cylinders all the way down track and ran 6.00/219. To say the Ridley camp was excited is an understatement to say the least. The other semi was also a run for the ages, as Severance defending champion took on the home town hero, Shawn Cowie. Severance got the slight starting line advantage and held it until half track, after that it was all Bill Moore power, as Shawn caught the Federal Way driver and steadily pulled ahead. The scoreboards lit up to the tune of a career best and first time in the '20's, 5.290/271....................Wow, and, "the crowd went wild" (Bob Frey sorry, I had to take your guote), literally you could hear the fans screaming. Awesome is all I can say!
Final round..................... Looking back in the archives there has not been two BC based cars in the final round ever in the Top Alcohol classes at a Divisional or National event and here we had one, at it was in the home province as well. While the driver for the Ridley car was American, this is easily Dale's favorite track. It would all come down to whether or not Johnsen had more in his arsenal. As you know, based on the previous seven runs by the Cowie team, they for sure had another low '30 or better in that car. You could count on the driver having perhaps a couple hundredth on the Ridley side, but would that be enough? ............It would have been, if the car could have repeated its semi final run, as Dale was psychic on the tree, with a deep staged .003 light, Shawn was yawning at the tree, as he went .090. Lucky is almost the term you could give the Cowie team but in reality, the 5.37 by Carlson was a bit more out of left field than expected. The thing is a 5.40 would have given Carlson the win in the final, but he was loose and he pedaled the car and then scoreboard lit up to the tune of a 5.59/243. The other lane's scoreboard said..... you guessed it, a low 5.3, this time a 5.33@270 again. Victory went to the expected driver, but the way it all went down was certainly not what most pundits would have thought. My forecast (on this page scroll down) said that Cowie was the favorite, Carlson was #5 but as I stated, "had a legitimate shot of going a round or two". They took it one further and now there are two cars from the lower mainland with a solid chance at every event. ...............As guest Saturday announcer Bob Frey says............"Way Cool"
Carlson's car is well back behind Cowie.
These two pictures say it all TAFC Day four (counting the test Thursday) and everything was set in place the contestants were tuned up for what should be a very good day of motorsport racing. Another big crowd was on hand to witness what many anticipated would be a history making day, as many Canadian competitors in the TA classes were solidly in the field and were set to challenge for the Wallys. Round one of Funny Car was up first and Rob Atchison got the upset of the day, in one of the closest Funny Car races in recent memory. Rob got a tenth and a half at the starting line as Ken Webster in the Synoil Flopper forgot the Monster energy drink, Rob needed all but .002 of the advantage as he took the win with a 5.917 to Webster's quicker 5.780, a great win for Atchison, but Webster will know he let that one get away. Brian Hough the #1 qualifier was up against, no one, as only seven cars qualified,so he got the automatic bye run. He did not lay down though and ran his quickest et of the weekend, a very stout 5.62, just to put some fear into the rest of the field. John Evanchuk got an easy 5.75 win over a troubled Trevor Lebsack as he still after two test runs and three qualifiers, still could not manage the starting line as tire shake and then a blower lifting pedal job ended his weekend on a very troubled note. Back to the drawing board for the Slave Lake Alberta team. In the final pairing, Clint Thompson dispatched of a much quicker leaving Tim Nemeth, as the Miner Bros. racing engine finally got a solid lap down the 1/4 mile. Clint turned in a 5.64 to an engined wounding 7.28 for the Chilliwack based TDN team.
Round two...............Thompson the three time defending got the #2 qualifier Evanchuk. A tough task for the Red Wolf team they felt they were close to running in the 60's. John got a big jump on the starting line (.086), and held on for a .026 stripe, with his first 5.6 of the weekend, a 5.699 to a closing fast 5.639. To put it mildly, the team did go wild. Ruth Evanchuk looking in disbelief when she saw the win light in their lane. Hough got Atchison in the semis, and this one was not close, due to a red light by Atchison. His .093 red light and 5.797 252.45 would have fallen just .012 short if he had of gotten a perfect light. Hough was uncharacteristic snoozing on the line with a .121rt, but another solid mid 5.6, a 5.664 250.76 was more than enough and it gave him lane choice for the final round against his second Canadian opponent in a row John Evanchuk.
Final round.............The final was set with Canada vs US and the US driver having the decided edge in performance. The unpainted unsponsored Hough TAFC is looking not only for the win, as he wants another top ten finish nationally, a Division championship again and almost most importantly, a sponsor on the side of his car. This team deserves one for sure. For this weekend they had to settle on the win as his 0.098 activated 5.641 256.55 was too much for a red lighting -0.115 5.825 252.03 for Evanchuk. John got real loose just after the hit of the throttle and could not recover. The red light meant it did not really matter though.
Finally the Mission jinx for Hough is done, and his four round wins in the previous three years is almost doubled in just one event. The win puts Hough into the points lead in Division Six.
Saturday final qualifying Qualifying was in a word, outstanding Saturday at Mission Raceway. Sunny skies, corrected air in the 1000 foot range and a large crowd were on hand to witness solid runs by most of the team in attendance. After Friday's first round, Shawn Cowie lead for the TADs and Brian Hough lead the TAFC contingent. TAFC Brian struggled a bit on Saturday as he shook and turned in a 5.71 the first Saturday run and then he went for broke in the final run and was real loose forcing him to shut down early. His 5.65 on Friday stood up for the #1 spot in the field. John Evanchuck improved from his 5.79 Friday as he was just a tick away from the 5.60's, with a 5.706 that was just ahead of Clint Thompson who went 5.708 in the final round of qualifying. #4 was Ken Webster, who shut off early on his second round lap, but he went 5.73 in the final session. Rob Atchison ended up #5 with a 5.77 at a career best speed on 252 mph. He has run a roots blown combination for his career in the IHRA. Tim Nemeth was the last driver to run in the 5's and he was a bracket racer. He went 5.81, 5.81 and 5.82 in qualifying good enough for #6. Trevor Lebsack was the final qualifier and he really struggled with his new screw blower. Even with veteran tuner Sean Brown assisting, he could not leave the starting line without severe tire shake and spin. His best et was a 6.20. Final qualifying 1 7 Brian Hough, Junction City OR, '06 Monte Carlo
5.657 256.77 256.77 Hough would get a first round bye run, Evanchuk would take on Lebsack, Thompson would battle Nemeth and Webster would go up against Rob Atchison. TAD The blown field was 11 strong, but two of the cars were basically done early. Leo Grocock, had major engine failure in the first run on Saturday as he was on a decent run until half track where the engine let go, after a rod failure. Bill Edwards who did not make Friday's session had an oil leak on Saturday's first lap and then in the final, he also had internals let go, ending his day after a 5.73 at 247. Gregg Lawrence is still struggling with the new A/Fuel nitro %, and his best was a 5.662 that put him in the first alternate spot in the field at #9. Kim Parker made just one run in qualifying, Saturday's first round, and she was on a good lap but rotating assembly issues did not allow her to try and improve on her 5.62/253 run. Ashley Bart made a career best run in Saturday's first session, as she ripped off a 5.56/241 that could have been a low 5.50 or possibly a 5.49, as she was off the throttle around 1200 feet. The team, thanks to photos supplied by SpeedZone, also found that her small stature caused her to back slightly off the loud pedal at the launch due to the "g" forces at the heat. They made a seat adjustment, and those issues were solved. The final round Saturday did not see an improvement, as the car slowed to a 5.80. Her 5.56 best put her in the #7 spot in the field. Doug Hegge made improvements throughout the weekend except for the final qualifier when he was shut off after the burnout. His best 5.48 run was good enough for #6 in the field. Dale Carlson made his best run in the first run Friday, as his 5.48 put him in the middle of the pack. Justin Davis made all three qualifying runs within .078 of each other with his best run also happening in Friday's first run. The 5.42 posted by the Steve and Patti Federlin tuned Digger was good enough for #4. His opponent would be Dale Carlson. Joey Severance is part of the previous pattern, as his Friday run, a 5.408, was also his best qualifying effort, and that put him #3 in the field. His first round opponent would be Doug Hegge. The biggest move in qualifying came for a team that was do for something good to happen to them this season. Brandon Johnson in the Johnson family dragster, nailed the final qualifier beside Shawn Cowie, who was the leader until that final lap. After talking to Mike throughout the weekend, thought they were on to something and he improved on every lap, and it capped off with a solid 5.360/263 that just edged out Shawn Cowie who was right beside him all the way down the track in the final session. Cowie's best in qualifying was a 5.371. He went 5.374 in the final session. Shawn Cowie stayed in the 5.30's throughout qualifying, and actually ran 5.37's in all three rounds of qualifying, a 5.371, a 5.372 and a 5.374. Talk about bracket racing. Cowie would face Bart in round one and Johnson would face Kim Parker. Final qualifying 1 6610 A/FD Brandon Johnson, Shelton WA, Hadman-BAE

Team event wrap ups Cowie Racing Weekend Wrap-up Third year TAD driver Shawn Cowie and the Cowie Racing team capped
off one of the best Divisional event weekends ever held at Mission Raceway.
Fantastic weather, good crowds all three days, an increase in car counts
despite the economic climate, and a final round in TAD against a fellow
Canadian owned car. Synoil Racing TAFC weekend wrap up While Ken Webster and the Synoil TAFC team did make the field at this
weekend's divisional, they will head back to Alberta knowing they let
one slip away from them. TDN Constructors Group Weekend recap Tim and Nancy Nemeth are really looking forward to their first event
of the year this weekend at their home track, Mission Raceway for the
BC Lordco Nationals. The local fan favourites from Chilliwack BC have
been very busy over the winter getting the Camaro ready for the 2009
season. They made a few changes to the combination over the winter,
and are also busy working on their new Nitro Nostalgia Funny Car. They
are hoping to debut it for their national open in July. For this weekend
they will concentrate on dialing in the new combination in the Alky
flopper. "We are trying a few different things to make the car
more consistent and quicker. It will take a solid and strong performance
for us to compete against the likes of Clint Thompson and Brian Hough".
With perfect weather at the sea level track we should be able to improve
on our career bests. Red Wolf Racing event wrap up A solid weekend that exceeded expectations overall, as the Alberta's
Red Wolf team went to the TAFC final round at the Mission LODRS this
past weekend. After qualifying #2 on Saturday, the team went into eliminations
cautiously optimistic they could reach the final round. In round one,
owner/driver John Evanchuck faced off against another Alberta driver,
Trevor Lebsack. John was real late on the starting line, but Lebsack
has been struggling all weekend, and the Red Wolf Flopper, caught his
opponent by 250 feet. John rolled to victory with a 5.75@252 mph.
Doug Hegge and his Turned-up racing A/Fuel Dragster had a solid opening
weekend in Divisional competition this past weekend at Mission Raceway
Park.
(Sportsman coverage is here) Friday round one qualifying Perfect weather greeted the teams and fans to day one of competition at the BC Lordco Nationals LODRS event at Mission Raceway.
There were no real surprises for any of the cars in the TA classes Friday, as all the expected leaders were where they should be, with one or two exceptions. Shawn Cowie leads with his 269 mph bracket car, as he turned in a solid and expected 5.37@269 mph blast, to sit atop the leaderboard in TAD. Right behind him is Joey Severance who ran 5.40@260. Justin Davis is #3 after a 5.42@262. The only mild surprise was Brandon Johnson who had a minor 2 dollar mechanical issue preventing that team from making a full lap. The throttle stop that is used with an A/Fuel car on the burnout, off came loose and that created a vacuum of sorts around the butterflies in the injector. The vacuum effect did not allow the throttle to open up, and he was forced to coast down the 1/4 at an idle. A surprise entrant is Kim Parker who arrived late Friday, so she will battle on Saturday. One local team owner was very happy with the performance of his TAD, as the Hugh Ridley owned BAD driven by Dale Carlson went a career best 5.48 at 259 to sit #4 after one round. Doug Hegge in his A/Fuel car is #5 with a 5.53 and Gregg Lawrence is #6 with a 5.66.
Leo Grocock and Ashley Bart both had issues at the starting line, as Leo was a bit late getting RPM's up and Ashley got hers up real early, making their side by side look a bit strained so to speak. Ashley was up way too long, and she managed to go only 80 feet before tire shake and an early click off. Grocock, got loose at 300 feet getting close to the center line and he also was forced to lift early. Bill Edwards Jr. did not make a lap Friday, as he was waiting on parts to arrive, and they got there Friday afternoon. Don St. Arnaud, the rookie out of Alberta, will not make any attempts this weekend, as he had a few minor glitches which will keep him out until the Spokane race. "Ya, we had a few issues with tech, which included the SFI certification of our Impact Fire Suit (which were recalled earlier this year, and we did not get notification). Also the new 6 point belts did not arrive until late Friday. We could have borrowed a suit from another team who had a spare, but it did not fit right and I was very uncomfortable in it, so we will regroup and make the debut in a month. A bit frustrating for sure but as a new driver I just want to be comfortable in my brand new car". Good decision for sure by the new team.
TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER
I say the bump in TAD will be a low 5.5
For the floppers, Brian Hough's brand new car is a bracket like performer, that goes straight and almost boring unlike many Funny Cars out there. He went 5.65@256 to lead the field. Clint Thompson is a half tenth back after a 5.71@251. John Evanchuk is #3 with a 5.79 and Tim Nemeth made his best run in a while, a solid opening lap of 5.81@246. Ken Webster shook and pedaled to 6.05 and just ahead of him was Rob Atchison who did the same to the tune of a 6.01@242. "Ya, this screw blower deal is a great way to make a tuner look dumb in a hurry", stated Rob after his pedal job. "A screw blower makes a car react way different than a roots blower, he stated. We have a way better idea now what to do". Look for that team as well as Webster to make huge gains on Friday. Trevor Lebsack is also struggling with the new screw. They are really having issue on the stating line. Hopefully they get is sorted out as well.
1) Brian Hough, Junction City, Ore., '06 Monte Carlo,
5.657 seconds, 256.77 mph
Unless Randy Parker pulls his TAFC out of the trailer
(no plans at press time), the top six will be well into the 5.70's and
quicker with Lebsack as the only wild cars. If Sean Brown gets it sorted
out in the clutch department, it will be a 5.80 or better seven car
field. Rounds two and three go Saurday at 2 and 4. Top Alcohol Team PR Cowie Racing. This weekend's Lucas Oil BC nationals event is a big
one in the schedule for Shawn Cowie. On Friday after round one of qualifying, Shawn went
5.37@229 to site #1."We have been experimenting with a new Injector
hat from Jeff Burnett. It works great, but there is a slight flatness
issue that we have to get sorted out to make a better seal, according
to crew chief Bill Moore. Turned-Up Racing
Red Wolf Racing Synoil Racing TAFC Thursday Top Alcohol testing Preview and the ``Zone`` odds maker follow Thursday testing photos. What we have here are shots from Thursday test session that would rival many events performances on race day. 5.30`s 5.40`s and 5.40`s by the TADs and 5.60s by TAFCs. Pretty impressive. And couple teams were out for the first time with screw blowers after the idiotic decision by the IHRA to end the Alcohol Funny Car class. These shots are y Bill Jeffery and Dean Murdoch. Bill is the pro between these two and has supplied SpeedZone with more great photos over the years than perhaps anyone. Murdoch is just getting used to the new Nikon, but seems to in the the right place at the right time on occasion. 40 years around the sport gives him intuition on drivers he has gotten to know, not only on a professionally but a personal level as well. The first 16 shots alternate between Bill and Dean on the same run by the driver.
Mission Lordco Nationals preview.... What can we expect this weekend?
The first Divisional event in Division Six this year,
but a number of teams have already got their whistle whet ..... So to
speak. TAFC Murdoch, Jeffery, Johnson, Ogonoski and King photos Even though the pre entry list says only eight cars, this will be a tough field. Here is the list (in no particular order): John Evanchuk, Dave Germain, Brian Hough, Trevor Lebsack, Tim Nemeth, Clint Thompson, Ken Webster and Rob Atchison.
Pick #1................. I know Brian Hough won last weekend at the Woodburn Opener match race, and he was in an unpainted Impala SS, but is it a whole new car or just a body. It should not really matter though as he is always tough at Mission but the last couple years he has been snake bit by a guy by the name of Clint Thompson. Clint has flat dominated this race. The Fontana (Miner) combination work really well in the good air at MRP (ask Severance). In the few races he has been at this year though Clint has struggled a bit. One DNQ. Divisionally, he has one first round loss and two second round losses (at two nat'l's). He loves this track though and I think he will stay to the course and wind up in the final round (go back to the last two year's tune-ups Clint and it is a guarantee). ........Odds........4-1
Brian Hough.........He has been THE best Division Six competitor overall since Bucky Austin left, and even during Bucky's reign he was right on his butt. Three top tens in the last three year nationally, including #3 (one round back of #2) in 2006. He just struggles here at MRP. Two second round losses and one Runner-up in the last three years. I know he wants this one bad, but can he put all his ducks in a row?...............Odds........9-2
John Evanchuk........Maybe a bit of a surprise high pick, for some pundits. But he has two things in his favor. This is like his home track in the NHRA, and he has a great tuner in his back pocket. Bill Moore tuner of one of the top five TAD's in the country has been his tuner for five years (and he had a little help for some of that from the (Hitter). and they improved their arsenal over the winter parts wise. Bill is not one to toot his own horn, but he can tune a race car. John has been in the high 5.60's in the car, and this weekend, they should be at least a half tenth quicker. John is a decent leaver as well, so the top Canadian this weekend in the flopper class should be the 'Red Wolf".......Odds........... 5-1.
Ken Webster....... The next Canadian car in the field and Rookie Driver Webster has one bad car. Literally it was bad earlier this year when it banged the blower so bad it disintegrated the body at half track like a fuel funny car. But in amongst the excitement the team with the Protz duo act tuning the car, have gone out and run low 5.60s (at his debut no less). Will the team repeat their fortune from Pomona in their home country? If they return to that form, they will reach the final, but I think they will be a semi finalist for sure...........Odds........6-1
Tim Nemeth..........Truly the home town boy, Tim and wife Nancy have been local favorites for as long as there has been divisionals at MRP. Their best ever finish here was a runner-up against the hitter five or six years ago. Since that time the team has been mired in the low 5.80's. It really is going to take a 5.60 if you want a chance to compete in the later rounds. I see Tim running in the 5.70's............Odds.........7-1
Rob Atchison...........This is a scary pick for sure. On paper, the team out of Ontario (longest drive for any team EVER here for a divisional). The three time IHRA world champion is here thanks to the support of ACE Manufacturing, is really in uncharted territory. After a decade of running a roots combination in IHRA competition, for the West Coast events they will run a screw blow on their Chevy powerplant. All I can say is today (during testing) will be the key to how well Rob and his dad can adapt to the new blower. He has competed twice this year back east with the primary car in roots trim. And went 248 mph. If he can dial in the free extra horsepower from a screw blower, then all best are off........Odds..........15-2
Trevor Lebsack..........Also a fairly scary pick. The Slave Lake Alberta driver is the second driver who is a long time IHRA competitor. This will be their first foray in the the dark side known as the "screw blower wars". The ace in the whole is Sean Brown is here to help them get on track. If looks good turn into performance on the track, then Trevor will be a finalist, as the car is the nicest looking flopper I think I have ever seen. Hopefully the team has gotten last year out of their system where anything that could go wrong did. If testing today goes in their favor then this will be a 5.70 car at least.......Odds.......8-1
Dave Germain.........I heard he might not be here this weekend due to a bit of a wall scraper last weekend, but I also hard it was not too bad, so hopefully the Washington driver will make it up here. Dave has a car on the verge. He has run solid 5.90, but their is lots of potential. A little bit of luck and a strong base line to the tune up and the team is really to take the next step. Hopefully they make the trek and are here for Friday......Odds......10-1
Will other cars show up? I hope one or two more do, if only to make the gys nere the bottom half of the field honest. Nathan Sitko, Leon Aines and Cal Tebb, where are you.
Photos courtesy Mark King, Dean Murdoch, Bill Jeffery and Bob Johnson
Leo Grocock......My long time friend, and like Bill Edwards, if wishes could turn into performance, then Leo will not only make the field, but he will run in the 5.60's or better. In reality, the Mission based team just loves to come out and have fun, and not look stupid doing it. Two years ago, the team make 12 laps in a row, all respectable (in the 5.70's), without hurting anything. Last year they started out okay and then the bottom fell out at the end of the year. This year, we will know by Friday....Odds....10-1
Update Thursday.......St. Arnaud will be a player. He has all the best parts and has an ACE in his camp. Automan Bob Ottow is the crew chief for the new team from Alberta. While Don has only a handful of laps on the car, with three or four runs here at Mission on Friday, he could very well run in the 5.50's or a lot better even. Ottow has tuned a couple cars in the 5.30's already this yea,r and this car has as good or better parts. Even a couple newly developed pieces as the technical guru is always on the edge of something radical. If the ducks are in a row, put this team in the top half on the field...........Odds ....range from a 5-1 to 8-1
