Sportsman Sunday
Considering all the economic
uncertainty, this event this past weekend saw an increased car count
over last years event. 330 last year and 355 this year. Much of the
car count increase I suspect was due to the long term forecast which
was for great weather, and it was awesome weather.
The MRP facility is one of
the favorites for the racers in Division Six, The big issues over the
last five years or so has been temperamental weather. When its good,
they will come!
...........................Eliminations.......................
Comp Eliminator..............In
what can only be described as Ripley's believe it or not, Rob Harrison
won Comp Eliminator without making a qualifying run quicker than 16
seconds, seven seconds over his 8.40 index. The new "Igor"
six cylinder bullet was acting more like Mr. Hyde, as electrical issues
prevented the car from revving. They spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday
trying to source the issues, and then just moments before First round
of Comp Eliminator was called to the lanes, they found the loose wire.
They made the repairs, but the big question was will it work, they did
not get any chance to test it. It would be tested in their first round
match-up against #8 qualifier Ray Hadford. Hadford had been .57 under
in qualifying, so it would be a tough match-up even if the car rpm's.
The car fired, Rob rolled into the burnout box and hit the gas pedal.
To every team member, a huge sigh, as the car did what you want it to
do, rev and smoke the tires. I did not know Rob's wife Dolly had such
a vertical. After the burnout Al lined up the car, Rob staged, left
first, (.94 handicap), had an off light .181, but the car shot off like
a rocket. Hadford, was also late, but he had no chance in this race,
as The Inline Six, did what the team had hoped it would do. Rob lifted
early, and coasted through, 25 mph down from what the car can run. In
round two, he took on Pat Byron, and again the car did what it was supposed
to do, and Byron had issues, so Rob let off a bit earlier and he was
off to the semis. He took on Adam Bowdish, the #6 qualifier. Both drivers
had lost just over .05 in index. Harrison got a big holeshot on the
slower car and had caught Adam by 1000 feet. He lifted early again to
try and save the index, but lost another.01. But by some sort of intervention,
the Harrison Lougheed Baretta was in the final round. The top couple
qualifiers were out early, and his final round opponent was Brandon
Hutahla, who went .61 under in qualifying. Brandon had a.08 index hit
compared to Harrison's .07. Hutahla got .04 advantage on the starting
line, but the car could not run in the 7.30's or 40's as he had done
in earlier rounds, so again Harrison who was the slower car was so far
out front, that there was no chance of catching him.

A win when it did not
seem possible, and a future for the team that seems limitless.
Comp Notes...........#3
qualifier Dale Giroux broke in the final qualifier as the Alberta team
was trying to run the first unfactored 6 in B/AA. Valve train issues
prevented Dale from eliminations, a very tough break. #1 qualifier Casey
Plaizer gave a sure second round victory away when he lifted to early
against Hutahla. o2 lights and being able to run .7 under should have
guaranteed Casey a late round finish, but the sophomore driver will
learn from his experience for sure. Dan Barton was real late in round
one, and against Jeff Lane that is not wise. It wasn't and Lane was
off to round two. Early race favorite Clint Neff struggled in qualifying,
and had Plaizer in round one. He went .6 under but last late and he
will get a permanent adjustment..
Top Sportsman.
Terry Spargo was the
talk of Top Sportsman as he went as quick as 6.56@212 in his newly installed
Sonny's 707. Sonny himself said this bullet, which was in Deceglie's
Altered and then Hoerner's Altered before Spargo's, is one of the best
in not best engine's to come out of his shop. Terry had a first round
bye, but had a valve spring issue and he could not return for round
two. He is very excited about the next event in Spokane as he will run
the car in Comp in the A/AP class. Based on the numbers from Mission
the car should shatter the record in both mph and et. In ELiminations,
to no surprise, Randy Johnson drove his way through eliminations to
the final round. In the semis he took on local hitter Zak Clarke, of
the famous Surrey in a Hurry racing team", but Clarke had an uncharacteristic
.944 light giving a relatively easy win for Johnson. In the final round
he faced. Tony Hopkins who just stepped up to TS this season. Tony went
red, giving the freebie to Johnson. That seems to happen way to often.
I guess Randy's experience and success has something to do with it.

TS Pit notes........................
Greg Carlile is getting his blown Corvette sorted put as he ran a number
of 6.80 passes this weekend. The Moznik Bros. were out with their El
Camino's, but struggled on the starting line. Mostly Dale with the 10.5
tires. Roy ran a 7.00 best and Dale went a 7.55 best. Barry Daniluk
could not get down the track all weekend long, running in the 15 ssecond
range all weekend long. Not sure why he was inserted into he field.
My guess is because there was not a full 32 car field. Why both Dave
Richardson and Grant Howell red lit against Jim Hurlock is beyond me,
as Hurlock could not run the number all weekend long, he was leaving
via foot-braking, but both guys who would have had easy wins went red.
Rob Charlton was either real late or early in eliminations as he is
still struggling with his trans brake.
Top Dragster.
Very strange happenings
in the late rounds of Top Dragster, as Wes Garvin got the gift from
"Surrey in a Hurry" Digger driver Joe "Top Wop"
Mura. Garvin went triple 0 in the semis, but blew up his engine at 900
feet. Mura did not notice or failed to check early enough as he lifted
40 feet to late and went under by his dial by.008. Garvin was .17 of
his dial. In the other semi Jon Reidel had the odd car single. There
was a bit of a break due to an oil down and he got out of his car, to
check things over. When he noticed either an oil or fuel pump issue
(I think Fuel pump), so he babied his car to the starting line and just
took the green. The end result was the car was broke, but because Garvin
had broke in his semi final win, all Reidel had to do was stage the
car in the final and he would get the win. Mura must be kicking himself
now. Ouch!!!!! In all the years I have watched Stefan Kondolay race,
I have never seen him got out in the first round in both cars he was
competing in. He went red in Top Dragster and could not hit the number
in Super Comp.
Super Stock

Jody Lang won again at
MRP, and this time he defeated first time finalist Casey Setters. The
biggest match-up in that class was actually in round one when Lang took
on Division Seven hitter Tibar Kadar. Through some kind of qualifiying
manipulation, the two top sportsman racers on the West Coast paired
off early. Lang won and went on to take the Wally.
Stock.

First time winner Greg
Kielman defeated veteran Bill Bushmaker in the final round in Stock.
Both Lang and Kadar were in that class as well, but both where out in
round two.
Here are all the final rounds From Mission Raceway.

Sportsman Friday.

Dale Giroux was the
big news maker Friday as he went 7.00@ almost 196 in his Panella powered
B/AA Cavalier in the second session of Comp Friday. A 7.02 in round
one and that quick 7 flat in the heat of the day bodes real well for
the Canyon Creek Alberta driver on Saturday. If the weather is cool
for the first Saturday session he will run in the 6's.

Right beside Giroux
is his new daughter in laws brother Casey Plaizer who is .619 under
8.211 in the Ken Reich owned and tuned C/SMA. Dan Barton is #3 with
a.618 under 8.742 . Brandon Huthala made a career best 7.387 .593 under
in his C/A Cutlass. Clint neff left lots on the table as he is .567
under in his lightweight K/A he went 7.97 at only 144 mph. He should
be around a tenth and a half quicker at 25 mph faster. If so he will
be #1 in the field for sure.

1) Dale Giroux, Canyon Creek, Alb., '05 Cavalier, B/AA,
7.004 seconds, -0.636 (under index)
2) Casey Plaizer, Edmonton, Alb., '04 Cavalier, C/SMA, 8.211, -0.619
3) Dan Barton, Post Falls, Idaho, '05 Cavalier, G/SMA, 8.742, -0.618
4) Brandon Huhtala, Puyallup, Wash., '97 Cutlass, C/A, 7.387, -0.593

Top Sportsman

Top Sportsman had an equally great news maker as Terry
Spargo bepasses the 660's al together Friday as he went 5.59 and then
5.56@ almost 212 mph in his Sonny Leonard Hemi powered Cavalier. Wow
is all I can say as the 707 monter is one fast bullet. Greg Carlile
is #2 with a 6.84 in his blown Corvette. Mike Srickland struggled to
a 6.92. I say struggle as he should be a tenth quicker at the seas level
track. Barry Daniluk with his big inch Camaro is really struggling as
his 6.60 potential ride has not gone more than 40 feet on any of his
attempts.

Top Sportsman top ten.
1) Terry Spargo, Delta, B.C., '02 Cavalier, 6.569 seconds,
211.96 mph
2) Greg Carlile, Lake Stevens, Wash., '96 Corvette, 6.842, 203.94

Top Dragster
For as uch as Dad Daniluk is struggling, his son Steve
made his best ever lap a great 6.70 to sit .001 ahead of Neil Lachelt.
If I was a betting man, I would say that Lachelt will run a low 6.60
Friday. He has gone in the 30's before. SpeedZone sponsor Dan Provost
in the RAD TOp Dragster is #15 with a 7.15.

The shot that got away. I was setting up to take a
pan shot of this dragster down track when I saw him launch skyward
at the starting line. I did click one shot (zoomed out) but as you
can see, both Paul Grant and Dean Murdoch have the car in their
sights and were able to get awesome shots of the wheelstand |

I will end todays blog with a very cool pan

I am now heading out for day 1 of qualifying.

Comp Eliminator preview (will
update Friday night after day one qualifying )
Comp is a tough one this year
and these teams are the true working stiffs that have cars that rival
Pro Stock in costs. With the economy in transition (good term right),
a number of teams are scaling back this season. That being said the
ones who show up will be very stout.
No one is real dominant in this
class for one main reason........INDEX. Many teams don't want to screw
with it, but there are a few who don't care. Jirka Kaplan for one just
wants to go fast (one of the few to ever go 1 second under the index),
and Rob Harrison to a lesser extent. Don't know if Jirka is coming but
Harrison is already pitted.
Starting with last years winner
Rob Harrison..............A bit of an unknown this year as the team
has developed a different mouse trap again. They were dominant at last
year's divisional event running way under the index and taking the Wally.
If I had to guess, and that is why I am writing this story, I would
say the odds of Harrison repeated are ...........drum solo..........5-1
Jeff Lane....How can you not pick
perhaps the most dominant sportsman driver in Division six history.
Jeff Lane has more divisional wins than anyone driver in know, and they
won at Boise to start the season. ..........Odds.......5-1
Clint Neff..........Went almost
.8 under the index at Phoenix and was the runner-up at Boise, the unique
K/A is solid and Clint is due..........Odds 11-2
Adam Bowdish.......Past Division
Six champion and always runs well here at MRP. Went to round two at
Boise, but he likes sea level air better...........Odds.......6-1
Bob Marshall.........Is the strong local runner who
said this will be the final year he takes a strong run in Comp eliminator.
He has the national record in B/AA (factored) and his one last goal
is to run a "6" non factored. He went 7.09 two weeks ago on
a track that will not be as tight as it is this weekend, and the air
should be even better as well. If only comp got to run in the cool morning
air. His goal is to run quick not so much winning (hard to believe but
that is true...........Odds.....7-1
Bob Lambeck.......If the California driver comes North
he will go to the late rounds. A multi time divisional event winner
he ran real well early in the year, and at sea level he is solid...........Odds.........15-2
Casey Plaizer..........He can drive and if Ken Reich
has found some hp on the dyno, then the kid from Edmonton will be at
least a two or three round finisher...........Odds......8-1
Pat Byron.........Solid C/D competitor, Pat is usually
.5 under, but is there more in the bank to have another tenth if he
needs it.............Odds.........9-1.
Brandon Huhtala....... A very good driver but is only
a .55 guy at best. Will go a round for sure.........Odds......10-1
The Rest of the pack...........21-2.
