Race #2

The start of Race # 2 at Mission Raceway is today (Friday)..........and the whether is hot hot hot. A welcome change from MAy but why can't there be a middle ground. I digress............will have the Friday report up later today.

And if it like the first race, there could be a few upsets. But a couple hitters did get their deserved Wallys.

After a couple slightly unexpected finals in the alcohol classes, make it wide open. Bucky Austin finally got his first win of the year, and Time Nemeth went tot the final for the first time in TAFC . His r/u puts him in third place in the standings. Brandon Johnson was maybe not the favorite going into elimination's but you can't ever count out the Washington based team. His win puts him in serious contention as well. Kim Parker was the r/u but suffered a broken fuel line on the fire up and could not make the repair in time. It was nice to see Shawn Cowie get the win in Top Comp. His first ever, and to get the win from the #1 qualifying spot is an extra bonus. Cory Thompson came oh so close again in Stock, but could not take out his nemesis Jody Lang. Lang had the better light and knows when he should dump at the big end. Congrat's to Vicki Strell for her win in Super Pro.

Weekend galleries are here, here and here.

Rain halts the Lucas Oil Lordco Nationals after Saturday's qualifying and early rounds of elim's. The event has been rescheduled until August 3-4 during the week before the second event here at MRP.

All classes got in their final qualifying shots and most classes (except for TA, Super Comp and Super Pro) ran one round of elimination's. Huge numbers were not posted but a few good runs were made in both TA classes. Hillary Will ended up the #1 car in TAD with a solid but less than expected 5.37/267 lap run in the final session on Saturday. Brandon Johnson, the #1 qualifier on Friday improved his time to a 5.41 and sits #2. Federlin and Severance round out the top half of the field. Ed Verenka was the lone A/Fuel car, (two more Kevin Brown and Garrett Bateman were expected), and his first race in 98% trim produced a 5.85 best. Bill Edwards Jr. eased his way to a 5.85 just in front of Verenka, and only made one lap due to crank shaft issues. Leo Grocock made only one lap all weekend and the 'School" team produced a early shut off 6.03/202 that would of been a 5.88 -5.90 if Leo have of run it out the back door. Rookie Greg Sereda is #1 alternate after a 6.22 best and that team looked pretty good, and should be a 5 second performer in the roots powered car. Bob Meeks driving the Ken Gilmore's TAD, hurt it in their only attempt on Friday and could not make repairs to try and bump into the field. Paul Julien had no crew until Saturday and then found transmission problems that kept the local team from making a run at all on the weekend. Greg Tacke was the other car expected who did not make the trek.

TAFC final qualifying

Brian Hough leads the TAFC class with a solid 5.62/257 run in the final qualifier. Bucky Austin is #2 after a 5.71 best. Austin was experimenting with a small 9 inch clutch setup, much like the one in Hillary Wills TAD. According to Bucky", this deal works so well in TAD that we thought we would try it for a few runs at Mission. We were going to run it one more lap, in the first round against Trevor Lebsack, and then switch if we made the semi finals to our usual clutch set-up.

John Evanchuk made the biggest noise on Friday in FC qualifying, when he ripped off a career best (in his own car) 5.83 that had him sitting as the #1 qualifier after Friday. The team was very stoked and want to make a statement due to their low ranking in SpeedZone's Print magazine. John stated that the team had a point to make because he felt the ranking was not deserved, afterall he ran very well last year in Dave Dickison's car and qualified in the top three at the last couple national opens at Mission on his own . After their three runs at Mission this weekend, I would say that John proved his point well and should be considered a solid contender at all the events this season. Tim Nemeth also got a few of the bugs out of his new car and ripped off what looked to be an effortless 5.89 on Saturday. After shaking at the top of 1st gear, for four consecutive laps (including Thursday test session), the team adjusted the timers a bit and viola, no shake and a 5.89 on the scoreboard good enough for the #4 spot on the ladder. Nathan Sitko and Trevor Lebsack made a statement for the roots blower contingent with performances in the low 6.teens and good enough for the #7 and 8 spots. Ken Kraus and Hank Coolidge both suffered major engine damage and did not make the field. Derek Snelson for Anchorage also was outside the field with a #9 best .6.59.

Others expected to be at Mission included Don Hudson, but his fifth wheel hitch broke on the tow up here and Clint Thompson stayed home (probably due to the weather forecast).

Rob Harrison and Mike DePalma were the two two dogs battling it out in Comp Eliminator at MRP this past weekend. Harrision's inline "6" G/A wallopped the national record to the tune of a 7.849. Mike DePalma tried to be the first 6 second B/A car but came up short with a 7.066 best out of the Neon Pro Stock car. Ray Hadford ran the first 6 second A/ND lap here in Div 6, with a 6.98. Rick Distefano ran 6.25 in elim's in AA/PM but did not do it during qualifying so the record is not his.

May 13, 2004........Friday outlook is good, but the weaekend's moisture report is very unpromising.

Thursday Test n Tune.........................

.....................saw a number of cool cars and laps. A few wheelstands from not only Super Stock and Stock, but even a couple super class cars that found out the throttle stops don't always function properly. Most notable numbers included Steve Federlin's 5.41/264 and Brandon Johnson's 5.47/253. No Floppers ran great, and around 1/2 dozen TA's are still yet to come. A couple unknowns (or surprises to SpeedZone) showed up, including G. Serada in an ex- John Can'tstandya (Costanza) TAD. He ran two 6.0 laps to earn his license. A Tarapaski from out of Edmonton was also here to try and upgrade, but he blew it up on the burnout. Shawn Nault is also here from his Alaskan homage.

The best Hemi shot was laid down by Mike Ogburn, an 8.69 and then an 8.70. Jenkins ran a 8.71. Allyn Lee and newcomer Mark Viera both ran 8.80's. Mike Booker ran 8.97. Top Comp and Comp looked huge for car counts, and lastly, the IHRA invaded MRP as Art Hodges made laps in a 816 cu in mountain motored Dodge Stratus IHRA PS car and ran the quickest and fastest Pro Stock lap at MRP with a very loose 6.74/201. Rick Distefano and Joe Deleahy madke up the Pro Mod contingent for Cmp, and Rick laid down a couple 800 foot 670 laps. That were in Rick's own words were, "The first two passes out of 28 runs this year where I did not shake the crap out of the car and myself".

Wild new Camaro on his only lap of the weekend.

Jon Percy struggled with set up on Thursday

Art Hodges out in IHRA PS trim. Went 6.74

TIm Neneth's new Camaro is sweet.

Steve Federlin ripped off a stout 5.41

The Mercer's still have this mind of its own Datsun

Mark Viera went a 8.86 best

Dick Distefano made two solid 800 footers.

Mission Raceway Park is stop one of the NW Divisions Lucas Oil seven race series. Six of the events include Top Alcohol in the field, with only Boise not featuring the quickest and fastest Sportsman race cars in the world.

The "BC Lordco Nationals" is the biggest motorsport event in British Columbia in 2005, with over 400 race cars and over $30,000,000 worth of racing equipment in competition.

Beside TAD and TAFC, Comp Eliminator, Top Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Motorcycle are the sportsman classes in attendance. Super Pro is the loone Bracket class in competiton at MRP this weekend. THis is the 11th year Mission Raceway has hoated their Div event in the month of May, and while the early start here has produced great performance from all the classes, it has also been hampered by the moisture gods above. The event performance levels have kept the race in May and I for one think that is a good idea. Look at other dates for this race, and when you live in the NW, rain can happen at any time.

All the stories and updates on the event will be on this page so stay tuned.
