August 9, 2005 Photos by Shannon MacDonald, Bill Jeffery and Dean Murdoch Gallerys are up. #1 weekend highlights, #2 Friday, Saturday rapid shot sequences, #3 Sunday sequences shots August 7, 2005 Two Drivers double up at Mission Raceway
Michael Stone and the "NW Hitter" Bucky Austin were the two 'double' forces in competition over the past five days at Mission Raceway Park. Top Alcohol Funny Car The "NW Hitter" Finally got the win monkey off his back on Thursday and he continued with a dominating performance on Sunday, until the final round, where he was a bit lucky to get the Wally, but a win is a win. In round one, Bucky laid down the most dominating run of both races when he went 5.72/252 in his win over Randy Parker. He went an outstanding .949 60ft. on a track that should not have held those kind of #'s. In the semi finals, he stayed in the 70's with a close 5.78 to 5.88 in his win over the newest force in the NW, Tim Nemeth. Tim might have made it closer with a better light, but was distracted when his oil gauge sprung a leak, and sprayed a small amount of oil in the cockpit, that Tim felt would or hoped would not blow off. It didn't but his concentration was off and he did not get his usual jump on the starting line. Brian Hough meanwhile, ended up with a single in the opening frame, as John Evanchuk sprung an oil leak as they fired up his loaded for bear Firebird. The team was confident they could have run a high 5.90 at least, but the oil reserve tank pressurized, and put a small split in a seam. That team was certainly disappointed. Brian ran a 5.90 in round one. In the semi final, he took on Clint Thompson, the #1 qualifier. Clint was way late at the tree, and clicked it by 900 feet, as Brian was a couple car lengths in front due to the .138 starting line advantage and the 5,825/250 time slip in Brian's hands. The final for the first 400 feet looked like it would be all Brian Hough, as Brian laid a physic .009 on Austin, and Bucky went .116. Right at the 330 clocks, Brian's Firebird slowed and Bucky was on to his second divisional win of the year. The two wins move Bucky into the point lead for the first time this season. Brian Hough drops to 2nd and Tim Nemeth moves into third place due to his r/u on Thursday. 01 Bucky Austin 266 3 (W)8 Bucky Austin 0.116 5.806 251.04 (L) 6515 Brian Hough 0.007 9.683 82.01

Comp eliminator In Comp, California driver Michael Stone got his double against the same semi finalist in both races, the NW's dominant driver over the few years, Jeff Lane. Stone won the weekend event from the #1 qualifying spot. He had a bye in round one, and then took out Adam Bowdish and Dave Barcelon, to advance to the final round. Jeff Lane had a single in round one over a broke Bob Marshall, and then defeated Mark Stewart and Brandon Huhtala before facing Stone. Lane went .04 red in the final handing the easy win to the Tulara California driver. (W) 76 Michael Stone 0.042 8.013 120.06 (L) 600 Jeff Lane -0.041 8.486 121.27
Top Alcohol Dragster Round one
The TAD in Division 6, particularly the blown alcohol
version are some of the best in not the best in the country
and this weekend they performed almost flawlessly in absolutely
extreme conditions. The track temperatures hit 135 and the corrected
air was in the 2500 foot range, conditions Mission Raceway rarely
sees, yet four of the blown cars ran in the 5.40's and the other
was in the low 5.50's. The three A/fuelers struggled in the heat
much like the pundits of the class predicted they would. Will this
performance disparity stick around in years to come once they learn
more about their tune-up, not likely, but for the last few month's,
it seems the class is on an even keel. Steve Federlin lead qualifying
with a 5.49, and the balance of the field was with .17 of each other.
In round one, Federlin started off the round with an even quicker
5.48 et in defeating a tire smoking Ed Verenka. #2 Joey Severance
in his new and newly crowned "Best Engineered" car, went
5.47 to even better
In the semi finals the perform level dropped ever so slightly, as the sun beat down harder making the conditions that much more difficult. Steve Federlin kept his strong shot at the world and divisional title intact, he lead lead from start to finish in his race with the cylinder dropping A/Fueler with Duane Shields holding down the loud pedal. Steve has a couple problems in the run, but ran a 5.63 to take two car lengths on Shields' 5.85. Hillary Will was 1/2 a car length behind Joey Severance at 200 feet as Joey had a great .009 light and was on a good lap until his car got loose. Will drove around him at half track and won by .07 (about a car length), 5.50 to 5.65.
The final round almost mirrored Hillary's semi final race, as Steve Federlin took an early lead but a broken valve train did him in and Hillary drove around Steve by the 600 foot mark and got her first ever divisional win.
Steve Federlin entered the two events this weekend, with 230 points Brandon Johnson was 74 back and Hillary Will was 93 back. With those two drivers getting the two wins, Brandon cut the lead by ten and Hillary moved 21 points closer to the lead. The last two Div 6 races at Acton and Medford will likely see that difference change up or down. Joey Severance and Kim Parker will also have a say in the final scenario. 01 Steve Federlin 337 5

August 6, 2005 Final qualifying....... Saturday Night Murdoch photos What a day! MRP's action was hot, hot, hot! The two top Alcohol classes were separated in the top 6 in each class by less than a tenth, giving Sunday's final eliminating the potential for a pick em race. The A/Fuelers struggled on Saturday to keep from smoking the tires, but with round one at noon, is is possible a coupe of those could advance into the later rounds. Shields smoked the tires just past 300 feet on both runs on Saturday, Kevin Brown did the same on the first Saturday hit and then had a fuel line come loose on the second lap (look at the photo below.). Ed Verenka smoked em in the first Saturday session and then ran the best A/Fuel lap of the day in the final round, a pretty good 5.67. Steve Federlin took the top spot with the only 5.40 of the weekend, a 5.49 that put him .04 ahead of Joey Severance in his new blue and gold ride. The only non qualifier was Leo Grocock who was actually on a high 5.80 lap in the first session, but lifted at 800 feet when his oil gauge showed a bit too low pressure. Unfortunately, the gag was found to be faulty, so he could of legged it out for what probably would have been his first 5.70 lap. Top Alcohol Dragster

Tim Nemeth almost made TAFC history for the dogwood province as he came close to being the #1 qualifier for the first time since Stan Sipos was a force back in the late 80's and early 90's. His 5.807 is good enough or the # 3 spot though in the tight 8 car field. Clint Thompson took the honours from the "Hitter", as those two battled in the last pairing on the day, with CLint edging Austin 5.77 to 5.78. Nathan Sitko made his best lap at MRP with a 6.13 and had his best speed of his racing career, a 233 mph lap that should or could have been a 6.0 run. The starting line is where the Alberta based team is struggling. John Evanchuk put his name out there as a threat as well, when he went 5.87 in the heat of the day. Hiss lap was within .1 of the top cars. The final rounds will be very exciting.

August 6, 2005......Saturday Morning It was a day one that should have been named the 'Carnage Nationals". A 340 car event that easily could be finished by 7:00pm turned into a marathon that ended at 9:30pm with another hour of racing still to be finished Saturday sometime. And all the culprits were not the Alcohol cars. Those nasty blown alcohol and injected nitro beast were partly to blame, as Clint Thompson have a huge engine failure at 800 feet in his first lap at MRP this year. Randy Parker suffered a similar fate, right at the starting line, so his clean up was only 150 feet long and lasted a mire 15 minutes. The major delayed were caused by the sportsman classes a Super Gas Corvette running in the Top Sportsman shoot-out, had his engine let go right at the finish line and it turned into a major fireball that Rich Carlson and Larry Pfister captured on film and digital cameras. We will have photos up of that one later tonight. A couple other major delays were unfortunately also part of Friday's festivities. With the heat and the marginal racing surface (a surface drastically affected by the hot hot conditions, as track temp was well over the 130 degree mark). teams really had to be diligent and drivers had to be careful. In TAD, ten cars are on the property, but only 7 made laps, and six of those are bunch up within .07 of a second. Ed Verenka was first out and he ran a 5.70 in the 2000+ feet of air. Then the next six raced like they were in the newly formed Super alcohol 5.50 class. Joey severance leads with a 5.53 and Kim Parker rounds out the first six with a 5.60. Notable Hillary Will did not make a 1/4 mile excursion as she was leaking fluid after her burnout, Leo Grocock had no oil pressure after his burnout and Paul Julien did not make an attempt. If condition stay the same for today (Saturday) and Sunday, this will be a race solely decided by the driver, as all crew chiefs have the 90 degree tune-up in the bag. In TAFC, the creme is at the top, except for one car, Clint Thompson, the NW Nationals winner and the most recent member of the 5.50 club. He had his Miner bros. Fontana engine let go at 700 feet and coasted to a 6.54. Bucky Austin leads with a 5.805 and Tim Nemeth came within the last pair of leading the field after Friday, as he ripped of a 5.823. Timmy and the Chilliwack based team have become players in this Funny Car game. The help he has gotten from Steve Boggs is starting show itself. His 5.76 on Thursday during the rescheduled May event was the first 5.70 by many car in British Columbia ever. Yes he holds the distinction of being the fastest and quickest TAFC in the Western most province. That and a buck will get you a cup of coffee. It would be nice if it could land him a good dollar sponsor though. Saturday should see Thompson challenge for the #1
spot, as should Brian Hough who sits just behind Nemeth after a
5.855. Dave Germain was a surprise Funny Car entrant and he layed
down a very good 5.937 and John Evanchuk ran the last "5"
from Friday with a 5.993. That Alberta based team is looking to
run a high 5.80 on Saturday, and have the power and the tuning experience
to do it. TAFC Friday qualifying 1 8 Bucky Austin, Fife WA, '05 Firebird 5.805 252.17

Local top qualifier Rob Harrison is not here (as of yet). The other couple locals, Bruce Perkins and Bob Marshall are both in the field, near the bottom. Perkins shut his Trans Am off early in his run and sits #14 of 15 and Bob Marshall who is doing his on engine tuning this weekend, ran 7.416 to sit #12 at .384 under. Cowie won the race on Thursday and almost went to the final of the Prince George event that was almost completed on Friday. Race #2 The start of Race # 2 at Mission Raceway is today (Friday)..........and the whether is hot hot hot. A welcome change from MAy but why can't there be a middle ground. I digress............will have the Friday report up later today. And if it like the first race, there could be a few upsets. But a couple hitters did get their deserved Wallys. After a couple slightly unexpected finals in the alcohol classes, make it wide open. Bucky Austin finally got his first win of the year, and Time Nemeth went tot the final for the first time in TAFC . His r/u puts him in third place in the standings. Brandon Johnson was maybe not the favorite going into elimination's but you can't ever count out the Washington based team. His win puts him in serious contention as well. Kim Parker was the r/u but suffered a broken fuel line on the fire up and could not make the repair in time. It was nice to see Shawn Cowie get the win in Top Comp. His first ever, and to get the win from the #1 qualifying spot is an extra bonus. Cory Thompson came oh so close again in Stock, but could not take out his nemesis Jody Lang. Lang had the better light and knows when he should dump at the big end. Congrat's to Vicki Strell for her win in Super Pro. Race #1 August 4, 2005 Winners from the rescheduled May event. TAFC

Rain halts the Lucas Oil Lordco Nationals after Saturday's qualifying and early rounds of elim's. The event has been rescheduled until August 3-4 during the week before the second event here at MRP. All classes got in their final qualifying shots and most classes (except for TA, Super Comp and Super Pro) ran one round of elimination's. Huge numbers were not posted but a few good runs were made in both TA classes. Hillary Will ended up the #1 car in TAD with a solid but less than expected 5.37/267 lap run in the final session on Saturday. Brandon Johnson, the #1 qualifier on Friday improved his time to a 5.41 and sits #2. Federlin and Severance round out the top half of the field. Ed Verenka was the lone A/Fuel car, (two more Kevin Brown and Garrett Bateman were expected), and his first race in 98% trim produced a 5.85 best. Bill Edwards Jr. eased his way to a 5.85 just in front of Verenka, and only made one lap due to crank shaft issues. Leo Grocock made only one lap all weekend and the 'School" team produced a early shut off 6.03/202 that would of been a 5.88 -5.90 if Leo have of run it out the back door. Rookie Greg Sereda is #1 alternate after a 6.22 best and that team looked pretty good, and should be a 5 second performer in the roots powered car. Bob Meeks driving the Ken Gilmore's TAD, hurt it in their only attempt on Friday and could not make repairs to try and bump into the field. Paul Julien had no crew until Saturday and then found transmission problems that kept the local team from making a run at all on the weekend. Greg Tacke was the other car expected who did not make the trek. TAD final qualifying 1 7470 B/AD Hillary Will, Scotia CA, Santos-BAR

Bucky Austin is #2 after a 5.71 best. Austin was experimenting with
a small 9 inch clutch setup, much like the one in Hillary Wills
TAD. According to Bucky", this deal works so well in TAD that
we thought we would try it for a few runs at Mission. We were going
to run it one more lap, in the first round against Trevor Lebsack,
and then switch if we made the semi finals to our usual clutch set-up.
John Evanchuk made the biggest noise on Friday in FC qualifying, when he ripped off a career best (in his own car) 5.83 that had him sitting as the #1 qualifier after Friday. The team was very stoked and want to make a statement due to their low ranking in SpeedZone's Print magazine. John stated that the team had a point to make because he felt the ranking was not deserved, afterall he ran very well last year in Dave Dickison's car and qualified in the top three at the last couple national opens at Mission on his own . After their three runs at Mission this weekend, I would say that John proved his point well and should be considered a solid contender at all the events this season. Tim Nemeth also got a few of the bugs out of his new car and ripped off what looked to be an effortless 5.89 on Saturday. After shaking at the top of 1st gear, for four consecutive laps (including Thursday test session), the team adjusted the timers a bit and viola, no shake and a 5.89 on the scoreboard good enough for the #4 spot on the ladder. Nathan Sitko and Trevor Lebsack made a statement for the roots blower contingent with performances in the low 6.teens and good enough for the #7 and 8 spots. Ken Kraus and Hank Coolidge both suffered major engine damage and did not make the field. Derek Snelson for Anchorage also was outside the field with a #9 best .6.59. Others expected to be at Mission included Don Hudson, but his fifth wheel hitch broke on the tow up here and Clint Thompson stayed home (probably due to the weather forecast).

May 13, 2004........Friday outlook is good, but the weaekend's moisture report is very unpromising. Thursday Test n Tune......................... .....................saw a number of cool cars and laps. A few wheelstands from not only Super Stock and Stock, but even a couple super class cars that found out the throttle stops don't always function properly. Most notable numbers included Steve Federlin's 5.41/264 and Brandon Johnson's 5.47/253. No Floppers ran great, and around 1/2 dozen TA's are still yet to come. A couple unknowns (or surprises to SpeedZone) showed up, including G. Serada in an ex- John Can'tstandya (Costanza) TAD. He ran two 6.0 laps to earn his license. A Tarapaski from out of Edmonton was also here to try and upgrade, but he blew it up on the burnout. Shawn Nault is also here from his Alaskan homage. The best Hemi shot was laid down by Mike Ogburn, an 8.69 and then an 8.70. Jenkins ran a 8.71. Allyn Lee and newcomer Mark Viera both ran 8.80's. Mike Booker ran 8.97. Top Comp and Comp looked huge for car counts, and lastly, the IHRA invaded MRP as Art Hodges made laps in a 816 cu in mountain motored Dodge Stratus IHRA PS car and ran the quickest and fastest Pro Stock lap at MRP with a very loose 6.74/201. Rick Distefano and Joe Deleahy madke up the Pro Mod contingent for Cmp, and Rick laid down a couple 800 foot 670 laps. That were in Rick's own words were, "The first two passes out of 28 runs this year where I did not shake the crap out of the car and myself".

Mission Raceway Park is stop one of the NW Divisions Lucas Oil seven race series. Six of the events include Top Alcohol in the field, with only Boise not featuring the quickest and fastest Sportsman race cars in the world. The "BC Lordco Nationals" is the biggest motorsport event in British Columbia in 2005, with over 400 race cars and over $30,000,000 worth of racing equipment in competition. Beside TAD and TAFC, Comp Eliminator, Top Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Motorcycle are the sportsman classes in attendance. Super Pro is the loone Bracket class in competiton at MRP this weekend. THis is the 11th year Mission Raceway has hoated their Div event in the month of May, and while the early start here has produced great performance from all the classes, it has also been hampered by the moisture gods above. The event performance levels have kept the race in May and I for one think that is a good idea. Look at other dates for this race, and when you live in the NW, rain can happen at any time.
All the stories and updates on the event will be on this page so stay tuned.
