POWERade Series points leader Ron Capps made it a perfect three-for-three in 2006 final rounds against John Force when he sped past the tire-spinning NHRA icon in the Funny Car finals at the O'Reilly Summer Nationals.

Capps, who extended his lead to 109 points, was joined by Top Fuel driver Doug Kalitta and red-hot Pro Stock racer Dave Connolly in the winner's circle at Heartland Park Topeka, site of the Memorial Day Weekend $1.9 million O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX.

Although Force holds a hefty 37-15 lead in lifetime head-to-head races against Capps, he's just 7-5 versus Capps when a trophy is on the line, including the dismal 0-3 mark he's accrued this year.

"It's fun running so tight against Force," said Capps, who became the first driver to win in the new Dodge Charger body. "When we get to the final it always seems like it's him in the other lane. It's hard to build a cushion. You get to a final and you end up hoping you don't lose the race and give him back 20 points. It's so brutal.

The Topeka final started off favoring Force, as he left the starting line three hundreds of a second ahead of Capps' Brut hot rod. But Force started hazing his tires at 400 feet and Capps was able to scoot past for an easy 4.992-second, 293.54-mph victory over Force's resigned 6.162-second run at 150.53 mph in the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang.

Mac Tools racer Kalitta handed Budweiser's Brandon Bernstein his second career final-round loss in 12 tries with a wire-to-wire job on the son of six-time champion Kenny Bernstein. Both of Brandon's final-round losses have come against Kalitta, who trimmed Melanie Troxel's championship lead from 154 to 96 points at this event. Kalitta has won three of the last four races.

"We've definitely got some good momentum going right now," Kalitta said. "A lot of it has to do with the great support we get from our teammates. It's a great team effort over here with Connie [Kalitta] leading the whole thing. We're having some fun and we feel like we can give anyone a run this year."

The first repeat winner in the Pro Stock class, Connolly has won two of the last three races since crew chief Tommy Utt took over tuning duties on his Skull Gear Chevrolet Cobalt. He's moved from 12th to fifth place in the rankings during his recent streak.

"It's been a complete 180-degree turnaround since Tommy came on board," Connolly said. "The deal is that all engines are run differently with the chassis you use. The fact Tommy has worked with Cagnazzi horsepower before made it super easy for him to come in here and apply what he knows to our car. He didn't need to adjust to anything new."

Greg Anderson's semifinal finish helped him increase his lead in the POWERade standings from 30 to 73 points over teammate Jason Line.

For the ninth time in nine events to begin the 2006 season, neither of the No. 1 qualifiers in the nitro categories (Melanie Troxel in Top Fuel or Robert Hight in Funny Car) won the race. Troxel was ousted by Bernstein in the quarterfinals while Hight was beaten by Capps in the semifinals.

Final qualifying

TOPEKA, Kan. --

Erica Enders
The female drivers added another page to the NHRA history book Saturday when Pro Stocker Erica Enders joined season-long Top Fuel points leader Melanie Troxel as the first pair of women to earn No. 1 qualifiers at the same NHRA POWERade Series event.
Robert Hight (Funny Car) rounded out the No. 1 qualifiers at the $1.9 million O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX, the ninth of 23 races on the $50 million NHRA POWERade Series.

Enders etched her own bit of additional racing history by becoming the first female Pro Stock driver to qualify No. 1 at an NHRA national event and she became the eighth female to earn a No. 1 qualifier in NHRA history.

"Being a girl in Pro Stock is pretty unique," said the 22-year old Enders said, who has two runner-up finishes but is still seeking her first POWERade Series event win. "It was exciting for us to qualify for the first time. It was exciting to win our first round, to get to a final for the first time; it's all been amazing. It's neat to share the podium with Melanie. I just hope we get to share it again tomorrow. That's the next thing we need to check off that list."

In just her 32nd career race, Enders already owns all the class records for female competitors. She is the fifth woman to compete in the 36-year-old factory hot rod category. Her Friday-night pass of 6.785 seconds at 203.06 mph in her Slammers Milk Chevrolet Cobalt was enough to top the Pro Stock field.

After qualifying in the top five at seven of eight races this year, her first low qualifier award earned her the $3,000 bonus from King Demon Crown that comes with the honor. What's impressive is the fact she's considerably quicker than the other contenders -- three hundredths of a second -- a gargantuan gap in a class where cars are usually separated by a few thousandths.

Melanie Troxel
"This is pretty cool," she said. "It's another check mark we get to put on the list of things we want to accomplish. I'm proud of my guys. They've never failed to give me a racecar that's capable of winning.

Troxel and Hight also stayed No. 1 in their respective classes with their opening-day runs, which took place under the lights Friday night. Troxel earned her second career No. 1 with a best of 4.567 at 321.50 mph in the Skull Gear dragster, while Hight used a 4.824 at 315.19 mph in his Auto Club Ford Mustang to snare his ninth career pole in just 32 starts.

Troxel has averaged a fifth-place start this season, including runs to the winner's podium from the fourth and ninth positions. She now hopes to become the first low qualifier from a nitro category in 2006 to convert a No. 1 starting position into a victory.

"The No. 1 spot hasn't been good for anyone this year but we're hoping to break that jinx tomorrow," said Troxel, who will pocket $4,000 from Budweiser for being the low qualifier. "Everyone knows that Friday night runs mean absolutely nothing on race day. The other runs are the important ones and we ran pretty well there. The car spun the tires down track every run and I lifted a little early each time because we didn't want to oil the track and incur any more penalties. We can't afford it."

Three-time series champion Tony Schumacher will try to get his first Topeka win and his first victory of the season from the No. 4 slot after a 4.622 at 312.35 mph.

Robert Hight
Team Force wrapped up the top three positions on the Funny Car ladder with Hight taking the No. 1 designation after a 4.824 at 315.19 mph, which is worth $4,000 from Skoal. This is the seventh time Team Force, which includes John Force and Eric Medlen, has swept positions 1-3. Now the trio will try to break a streak of never garnering a win after topping the charts as a group in qualifying.

"I'm with Melanie. We need to break this deal about no No. 1 qualifiers winning the race," Hight said. "Maybe we can both get it done tomorrow and put it to rest. My teammate Eric was the last guy to do it in Funny Car and that was at Seattle so we're coming up on a year pretty soon. We need to get past that. We can break that other deal too with the Team Force cars being 1-2-3."

Sunday's eliminations begin at 11 a.m.

Friday qualifying

Melanie Troxel and Erica Enders stood atop their respective categories after the first two of four rounds of qualifying at this weekend's 18th annual O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX.
Troxel and Enders were joined by Robert Hight on Heartland Park Topeka's provisional No. 1 qualifying podium at the $1.9 million race, the ninth of 23 on the $50 million NHRA POWERade Series.

If the 4.567 of Troxel in Top Fuel and the 6.785 of Enders in Pro Stock hold up -- as is expected with temperatures in the mid-90s expected Saturday -- it would mark the first time in NHRA history that two women have earned No. 1 qualifiers at the same event.

"These are the kind of things we should expect to happen," Troxel said. "So many women have come before us that it's just a non-event to me. I'm not surprised one bit that women are doing well. What's good to see is that good drivers are getting opportunities with good teams and some of those drivers just happen to be female."

For season-long Top Fuel points leader Troxel and her Skull Shine team, it would be the second No. 1 qualifier of this season and the second of her career.

Like Troxel, Enders took advantage of the cooler evening round to grab the No. 1 slot in Pro Stock with a 6.785 at 203.06 mph in her Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevrolet Cobalt. Her margin over the chase pack was an even three-hundredths of a second. For Enders, it would be the first No. 1 qualifier of her career and she would become the first female in NHRA history to earn a No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock.

"It looks good but I'm not going to say anything to jinx this," Enders said, when reminded that she would become the first woman in the class to qualify No. 1 should her time hold through Saturday's two sessions. "We thought we had it in Phoenix because you don't see many people improve in the heat, but Greg (Anderson) got around us in the final session. You just never know."

John Force Racing has set the table for their seventh 1-2-3 sweep of the top three qualifying slots if they can maintain the positions team drivers Hight, Force, and Eric Medlen earned Friday. Hight's 4.824 at 315.19 mph in his Auto Club of Southern California Ford Mustang was the quickest of the three.

"This is a good deal except no one who has qualified No. 1 this year (in Top Fuel or Funny Car) has ended up winning the race," said Hight, who was low qualifier at last weekend's race in Columbus, Ohio. "I hope we can change that because I really think that 4.82 will hold. It's supposed to be very hot tomorrow and I don't see anyone out-running that number when the sun's out."

If the number holds up, it would mark the ninth No. 1 qualifier for Team Force Drivers (Force 4, Hight 3, Medlen 2) in nine events, but that is only half the story: Of the 16 No. 1 qualifiers in Top Fuel in Funny Car this season, there have been no winners and only one runner-up.

Saturday's final two qualifying sessions are scheduled to begin at noon and 2:30 p.m.
