In a word...........

Melanie not only won for the second time this season, she accomplished something that no man has ever done (or woman for that matter)! Melanie goes to her sixth final round in a row dating back to last season, as she takes a commanding lead in the POWERade point standings. The brat pack second generation racers have come on strong this season and this weekend was no exception. Melanie Troxel, Cruz Pedregon and Kurt Johnson won the pro classes at the Summit.com Nationals at the best drag strip in North America, "The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After going through qualifying looking like her teammate or possibly Larry Dixon would be race day favorites, it became clear early in eliminations that prior finalists this season had the right race day combo, as Brandon Bernstein, David Grubnic or Troxel, would prevail when it came down to the final two. Bernstein looked very strong right until the semi finals when he smoked the tires against Grubnic. Grubnic had only one strong run in eliminations, but his opponent were not up to the task as he went to his second final round of the year. Troxel, to say the least is on fire and after qualifying #4 she stayed in the 4.50's all day until the final round, but even in the final round when her ride started eating itself up, her ride and her team was good enough to get the job done against the other top team (team Kalitta) in the class.

Funny Car

After a very long drought away from the winners circle Cruz Pedregon finally got his 23rd Wally of his career. Since his return to the ranks in the Advance Auto Parts Nitro Coupe, Cruz had gone more than 90 races without a sip of the winner's POWERade. It all ended last weekend at Las Vegas when he put out the points leader Ron Capps in a tire-smoking final round.

Cruz only qualified #8 in the field and ran high 4.80's in the first two rounds before winning two pedal-fests in a row in the semis (win over Tommy Johnson Jr) and in the final round win over Ron Capps. Capps who extended his point lead with his fourth final round finish of the year in the first five races of the 2006 season. The Force team again had their three team car in the top half of the top half of the field, but again they could not carry that success to a final round finish. Last years champion, Gary Scelzi, again struggled as he was a first round casualty for the third time this season to go along with one DNQ. With the demand for results from team Owner Don Schumacher, with their be a change on that team in the near future. Cruz's brother and team mate Tony Pedregon as well as Tim Wilkerson were usual hitters who failed to make the show at Vegas. Pedregon was very unlucky as he actually ran a 4.79, which would have put him in the top half of the field, but a big explosion on that run, made the team hurry back to the pits and forget about the scale stop, which DNQ'ed the run. Double OUCH!!!

Pro Stock

Kurt Johnson got the win in Pro Stock, and in the past that would come as not much of a surprise. But this season, Kurt has struggled mightily, including one DNQ two races ago at Gainesville. All the pain goes away in a hurry though when you are in the winners circle. His win over another guy who has not seen the limelight since early last year, Dave Connolly, was Kurt's 62nd final round and 33rd win of the year. Also of note with the final round at Vegas is the fact that there has been five different winners in the first five events of the year. Can you say, 2002 all over again where there were 12 or 13 different winners in the first half of the year. The top four qualifiers from Vegas all were out before the semi finals, which is a bit of a shock in a class that has seen dominance from the leaders after Saturday. That foursome included #1 Greg Anderson who has gone out in round one or two after making the first two finals of the season

TAD

All the fans and racers who think that there is parity in the TAD class, ...please stand up. (A/fuel teams, sit down) No one is up!!! All the racers and fans who think that the results from Vegas will be the norm for the rest of the year... please stand up (again A/Fuel teams please sit down) No one is up!!!. Well, this past weekends result from Vegas will not be the norm but it does show that there is a glimmer of hope for the blown cars. In corrected air over 3000 feet, it could be a big advantage for the blown cars. Sean O'Bannon proved it big time with his first ever win in the TAD class. The team is looking alot like the team of old when Rick Santos dominated. Qualifying and eliminations were dominated by the blown cars at Vegas, with 12 of the 16 cars in elims of the blown variety. No A/Fuelers were in the top half of the field and only one made it past round one (Mark Niver). Does this mean there will be close racing throughout the year. Well it will at 3000+ feet. But the amount of racing done at that altitude is way less than 1/3 the time. Also at the track with more than 3000 feet uncorrected the A/Fuelers get to run at 98%. It happened once this year at Tucson, and Niver dominated that race running a track record 5.35 in the process.

I do predict more 5.20's this season from the BAD's, but it will only come from 1-3 cars (O'BAnnon, the driver who gets the Will/ Austin ride and possibly Marty Thacker or Chris Demke, while there has been 15 - 20 5.20 runs already by the A/Fuelers.

TAFC

The second first time winner in a row at a National event in TAFC was the final result last weekend at Vegas. Ron August Jr. finally got his first well deserved win in what is becoming a class where there seems to be a lot of parity. Ron actually reached the final round here in Vegas four years ago, but did not walk away with the Wally. Here he ran consistent 5.60's throughout eliminations until the final round. He was one of only four drivers to run those kind of numbers all weekend and was the only driver to do it in eliminations. Not only that, did his driving off the tree was to say the least incredible. His worst light was a .049, and in the final round against 2004 world champ, sawed down the tree to the tune of a .007. His average for the four rounds was .025 at the tree. Wow!!

In round one, he took on North West threat Brian Hough and both drivers had Pro Stock like lights, sub .30 actually, but Hough's stellar .011 was not enough to hold off low et of eliminations, a 5.678 by August. In round two, he took out John Patton by 2/10ths with a 5.69 to 5.83. In the semi finals, his victim was Oklahoma's Brandon Lewis. The final round would potentially be his toughest as his opponent was multi-time national event winner and 04 National champ Cy Chesterman. August let it all hang out in the final with a great .009 light and a slightly better 5.732 et to take a .044 stripe, about 15 feet. What a performance effort to get his first National Wally. He stands to win a bunch of races this season if he can stay that focused.

Summit .com Nationals previews

Bernstein looking to regain magic of past NHRA victories at The Strip at
LVMS

LAS VEGAS - Second-generation Top Fuel Dragster driver Brandon Bernstein
is no stranger to success at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Bernstein and his legendary father Kenny made NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series history in 2001 at The Strip when they became the first
father-son duo to win at the same national event (Top Fuel Dragster and
Top Alcohol Dragster).
Now with father Kenny as team owner and Brandon behind the wheel, both
are hoping for more success at the seventh annual NHRA SummitRacing.com
Nationals April 6-9 at LVMS.
This year will mark Brandon's fourth appearance in the event as the
pilot of the nitro-powered Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster. He and the
members of the Kenny Bernstein-owned team hope that Lady Luck drops by
during Sunday's eliminations.
"We've had a slow start this season," said Brandon. "We had some crazy,
unexpected parts breakage in the first rounds of the first two events,
so we need some of that Vegas luck that our family has had in the past."
"We've had some good numbers in qualifying, but it seems on race day,
we're blindsided by mechanical gremlins. We have a very talented team
and we're capable of winning. We are all ready to go some rounds on
Sunday."
Bernstein hopes that the success his father's had at LVMS as a driver in
the past, winning the event in 2000 and 2001, will carry over to the
team this year.
"Dad did really well in Vegas during his career. Tim (Richards, crew
chief), Kim (Richards) and the team know how to tune our Budweiser/Lucas
Oil dragster to run the table here. By that I mean qualify No. 1, set
low elapsed time, top speed, and win the event. They've done it before.
It would be a huge morale boost for everyone, especially for all those
on the team that have dedicated so many hours and burned the midnight
oil to help us get back in the groove."
Tickets for the seventh annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals April 6-9
