Sunday eliminations

Top Fuel..........After absolutely dominating qualifying with four 4.40 runs in a row Tony Schumacher had to be the overwhelming favorite heading into Sunday eliminations, but that is the great thing about this sport, anything can happen. Round one started out without too many surprises, including another 4.40 run by "Shoe" (4.471 )and a win light over Alan Bradshaw. The only two lower half winners were Hillary Will who took out Brandon Bernstein despite a less than stellar .176 rt. Her 4.53 easily defeated Bernstein who had mechanical issues and just coasted through the 1/4 mile. The other lower half winner was Morgan Lucas, who pedaled his way to a 5.91 300 mph win over a troubled Kalitta who blazed the tires. Melanie Troxel was well on her way to her second final round in a row with a 4.484 win over Bob Vandergriff.

Schumacher's six in a row 4.4 streak ending badly with a 15 second time slip.

Final round
R Fuller, Left lane, (0.072) 4.563 321.42 def. M Troxel, (0.095) 4.589 318.92

The final round paired up a couple of the young guns in the class, Troxel and Fuller and the edge had to go to Troxel and the brain trust behind her. Fuller had .02 advantage at the starting line and extended it through the finish line for close to a .05 victory. The win by Fuller was his first in Top Fuel and he became the only driver to win in the Super Gas class as well as Top Fuel. His win put him into second place in the standings behind Troxel who had been in three finals in a row dating back to last November. The next event on the schedule is Gainesville and the :Gatornationals: in Florida.

John Force made some big predictions heading into this event including stating he would reset the national record. Well he did not accomplish that feat, but he did reach the final round for the first time this season.

In round one, Three top half qualifiers including #1 Eric Medlen were ousted. Robert Hight and Gary Sclezi were also early round upset losers.

P Burkart, Left lane, (0.056) 4.905 313.66 def. S Kalitta, (0.103) 10.421 89.71 T Johnson Jr., Right lane, (0.094) 4.809 324.05 def. The 1/4 finals, the Pedregon brothers were ousted by TJ and Force, Scott Kalitta's run ended at the hands of Phil Burkart and in a very close matchup, Ron Capps defeated Del Worsham by .003, with a slower 4.827 to 4.826 for Worsham.

T Johnson Jr., Right lane, (0.113) 4.808 322.42 def. P Burkart, (0.091) 4.887 314.39 J Force, Right lane, (0.098) 6.638 181.06 def. R Capps, (0.076) 6.861 216.62

In the semi finals, Johnson Jr. got by Burkart 4.80 to 4.88 and Force smoked his way over an equally smokey troubled run by Ron Capps 6.63 to 6.86.

T Johnson Jr., Right lane, (0.088) 5.225 249.76 def. J Force, (0.092) 5.705 294.69

Lane choice went to Johnson and based on the previous lap, you would have thought the Force camp would have the traction issues sorted out. In fact they didn't, and neither did the "Snakes" team. Tommy left first by .004 and recovered first in the side by side pedal fest, to the tune of a 5.225 to 5.705.

Tommy Johnson's win moved him into third place in the standing's behind Capps (#1) and Force.

Saturday final qualifying.......Top Fuel.......

Saturday turned into a day much the same as Friday weather wise and performance wise. Top Fuel came close to an all 4.50 field or better when the smoke cleared. Tony Schumacher was the overwhelming class of the field, as he ran four laps in the 4.40's and was the only driver to run in the stratosphere al weekend long. 14 drivers were in the 4.50's and Alan Bradshaw (#16 @ a 4.62) wound up the unlucky sole who gets to face off against the Army team leader. His team mate Melanie Troxel who won at Pomona two weeks ago, sits #3, just .001 behind Larry Dixon, who ran a 4.501 on Friday.

Other notable players in the field for Sunday eliminations include Bob Vandergriff, who clocked in a 4.572 best, and faces Troxel in round one. The other lady in the the class, Hillary Will went a 4.565 at a slowing 288mph on Friday and she gets to tangle Brandon Bernstein on Sunday. One of last weeks qualifying heroes, rookie JR. Todd went from hero to zero in the span of one face, as he failed to crack the top 16 and could only muster up a 4.962, a full half second slower than his stellar 4.50 from last weekend. How quickly this sport can turn on you. Scott Weis, for the second race in a row, and Bruce Litton along with Mike Strasburg all ended up outside the field.

Funny Car.............

Team Force turned in the #1 spot for the second weekend in a row, but it was third year driver Eric Medlen who ended up atop the standings after the four rounds of qualifying. Medlen and most of the Funny Car contingent could not improve their numbers. Gary Scelzi (#8) was the only driver to make a big move from the bottom half (was #14) into the top half of the field. Cruz Pedregon's 4.717 from Friday was enough to keep him #2 in the field. Scott Kalitta's 4.988 pass in Saturday's first round was just enough for him to make the field in the Flopper class. It will be interesting to see who his season progresses. Jim Head Tony Bartone and Frank Pedregon were the three regulars who failed to make the cut.

Key first round match-ups Sunday include Tommy Johnson (#11) and Robert Hight (#5) , Whit Bazemnore (#11) and Ron Capps (#6), John Force (#7 ) and Bob Gilbertson (#10) and Gary Scelzi (#8) and Phil Burkart (#9).

Pro Stock.............

Greg Anderson (#1 6.671) took the top spot away from Erica Enders Saturday in the first session and his team mate Jason Line made it an Ender's sandwich for the Summit drivers. Richie Stevens proved that there is definately a #1 driver in the Schumacher team camp in Pro Stock as he sits #4 and his team mate is again looking outside the field on Sunday. The two cars are close to a tenth apart in performance. Warren and Kurt Johnson are struggling in the set-up department in their team cars, as they sit #'s 11 and 14 respectively. Warren again turned in the top mph in qualifying like last weekend, proving the team is making close to if not the most hp, but the first 330 feet seem to be their bane. Mark Pawuk and Mike Thomas ae two other regualrs who ended up on the sidelines for Sunday eliminations.

Key pairings for round one include Kurt Johnson and Jason Line, Dave Connolly and Richie Stevens, and Jim Yates adn Larry Morgan.

A sunny, clear day greeted the racers and fans at the Checker, Schucks, Kragen Nationals in Chandler AZ today. With temps peaking in the high 70s, it was a great way to start the race weekend. In Pro Stock, Erica Enders in her "Slammers" sponsored Cobalt sits in the #1 position with a 6.679@ 206.48, that she ran in the evening session. Close on her heels in the #2 position is Greg Anderson in his "Summit" sponsored GTO.

In Funny Car, Bob Gilbertson had the early low qualifier after the first round with a very nice pass of 4.769 316.23. These guys are really having a great start to the season with a good showing in Pomona and the early numbers here. Eric Medlen eventually took over the #1 position after the evening session with a 4.707 321.96. Cruz Pedregon is a tick back in the second spot with a 4.717 325.45.

Tony Schumacher sits atop the Top Fuel Class with back to back 4.40 runs in both qualifying rounds today. Schumacher posted a 4.459 330.96 in the first round and a slightly slower pass of 4.472/327.35 to cap the evening off. Larry Dixon is in the second position with a 4.501 329.91.

Qualifying resumes tomorrow under even warmer conditions forecasted. That could make it very hard for those not in the show to bump their way in. The photo gallery from todays action is posted here.
