March 12-15, 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Gatornationals GAINESVILLE, Fla. Sunday eliminations (SpeedZone recap) The Al-Anabi Top Fuel team is getting in a groove and that could spell trouble for all the team challenging for the 2009 Full Throttle Top Fuel championship. Well not a dominating performance as all teams seem to be troubled by the Gainesville racing surface, they were the only team to run 4.80's on more than one occasion. Larry Dixon took his first win of the year and moved into the top three behind Gainesville semi finalist Brandon Bernstien (2nd overall) and 1st place Antron Brown who was a second round casualty. IHRA regular Booby Lagana Jr. had a great outing as he went to the semi finals. For the Funny Cars, Bob Tasca JR. got his first ever Funny Car victory. He defeated world champion Tony Pedregon in the final. Tasca will be a force to reckon with in 2009. Tasca was one of the strongest cars all weekend long including qualifying at the top of the field and running 4.1's all day long except for the final where he went 4.200. John Force and rookie Matt Hagan were semi final losers. Tasca moved all the way up to 2nd in the standings behind Ron Capps who was a 1st round loser. Jason Line was the Pro Stock champion, as he took out Allen Johnson on a holeshot. After three races Line now has a three round lead atop the standings. Allen Johnson moved into 2nd place in the standings in what will likely be another very tight battle in Pro Stock. Pro Stock Motorcycle was contested for the first time this season and in a bit of a surprise Hector Arana took the first win of the ear over Matt Smith. Arana was the dominant rider all weekend long running low et of each round of eliminations. He was also the #2 qualifier. Top Alcohol Dragster saw an all A/Fuel final round and it was two that are at the top of their respective field who battled in the final round. Duane Shields defeated world champ Bill Riechert with a very strong 5.28/272 mph blast. Riechert went up in smoke. Shields, Riechert and Michael Manners all went in the 5.20's in air correct to 1600-2100 throughout the weekend. Manners went 5.260 in the semi finals (he was real late and lost against Riechert). The scoreboard for TAD so far is: Three BAD in the 5.20's (Whitely twice, Schmeeckle and Demke) and three A/Fuelers in the 5.20's Shields (three times), Manners and Riechert. TAFC was won by Frank Manzo. He defeated Steve Harker with a 5.52 to Harker's tire smoking double digit number. NHRA final recap GAINESVILLE, Fla. --
Tasca, who earned his first No. 1 qualifying position on Saturday, finished the job Sunday by powering his Motorcraft Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang to a final-round performance of 4.200 seconds at 280.72 mph to hold off defending Gatornationals winner Tony Pedregon, whose Q Horsepower Chevy Impala trailed with a 4.536 at 210.90. "I'm speechless," said Tasca, who defeated Jim Head, Tim Wilkerson and John Force to advance to the final round.
Points leader Ron Capps lost in the first round in his bid to win the first three races of the season, but maintained a 38-point lead over Tasca, who moved to second overall with the win. Dixon raced to his first Top Fuel victory of the season and fourth at this event, posting a 3.898 at 311.05 in his Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Racing dragster to defeat Cory McClenathan, whose FRAM dragster lost traction early in the run and crossed the finish line in 4.570 at 192.60.
It is Dixon's first win for new team owner Alan Johnson. Dixon's first 43 wins came as driver for Don "The Snake" Prudhomme from 1995-'07. "I know how hard it is to make these cars go down the track, but they make it look easy," Dixon said. "It's an a amazing group. Alan Johnson is a genius and (crew chief) Jason McCulloch is working right underneath him, and I'm happy for him to get his first win. I'm also happy for sheik [team co-owner Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Thani] and to be able to get his first win the third race out. I'm honored to be driving the car." Despite a second round upset to part-time racer Bobby Lagana, Antron Brown held on to the series lead in Top Fuel.
"The engine guy side of me is really upset that I had to win on a holeshot," said Line, who also won the Gatornationals in 2005. "We've really struggled all weekend. We did not run good. (Top qualifier Mike) Edwards made us look bad. Hats off to him, he's driving really good. But it was a great win, and I'm very excited. For me to do this good this early in the year, it hasn't happened before so I'm excited. I've been driving pretty good, and knock on wood, it stays that way." In the first three rounds, Line outran Jim Yates, Kurt Johnson and Rickie Jones. He says it was a great confidence boost to get the win despite not feeling like he had the best car. "The guys did a good job because we did not have the best car this weekend," said Line, who extended his series lead with his 17th career win. "I was thinking to myself before the weekend started, the guy who drives the yellow car, Mr. Coughlin (Jeg Coughlin), very seldom does he win having the best car and we need to do the same thing because you're not going to have the best car every weekend and you'll have to step up some other part of it, and for me, it's the driving part. I'm doing the best I can and I thank the guys for working with me at the shop because they really do try to help me."
"It's really great to win this event, I've been coming here for a long time," said Arana, who won his first career race last June in Norwalk, Ohio after 18 seasons of trying. "I did it again. The first one wasn't a fluke and I'm going to win some more." The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues March 27-29 with the 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park, Baytown, Texas. Dixon covered the race distance in 3.886 seconds at 308.28 mph in his Al-Anabi Racing dragster to earn the 33rd top qualifying effort of his career and second at Gainesville Raceway. Dixon, also No. 1 at Phoenix three weeks ago, will face Winternationals winner Doug Kalitta in the opening round. In Saturday's two sessions Dixon was able to improve on his quick time from Friday, a 3.90-second effort. "We've been trying to run an .80 the last two or three runs," Dixon said. "I'm glad they found it. I thought it would take an .80-something to stay on the pole and I'm just glad it came from us. Even when Pro Stock Bikes and cars are running really good, and we know the air is there it's always a matter of whether the fuel cars can grip the track. For tomorrow we're going to have to wait and see if there's cloud cover or no cover and adjust for those conditions and hope it's right. I'm not hoping for anything other than four win lights."
Tasca held on to the top spot with his time from Friday, and dodged a late run by Ashley Force Hood, who produced the day's quickest pass and moved to second overall with a 4.126 at 301.00 in her Castrol GTX Mustang. "It was a little nerve-wracking because you want to be No. 1," said Tasca, who becomes 89th driver to earn a No. 1 qualifying position in the history of the category. "It's all kind of ceremonial because come tomorrow you need to run your own race. Chris (Cunningham, crew chief) told me [before his 4.16 on his last pass] that he was only trying to run a .15 because he didn't think anyone could beat the .12 and he needed to get a handle on his tune-up for tomorrow. He was pacing back and forth but told me he was staying with the .15. We didn't come here to get sunburned; we came here to win. It's real satisfying to work as hard as we've worked and, at the end of the day, I owe so much to Chris Cunningham. He's built an amazing team for us and works tirelessly on this hot rod."
"We've just been trying to race the track," Edwards said. "We're not making any changes that we didn't know anything about. We're just adjusting the car to the track and the tune-up to the air that we have. The car is just making phenomenal runs; it's just so smooth out there. If we can keep doing that tomorrow, hopefully we can have a good day. It's a long season, but we're sure excited about how we've started it. We've just got to keep the wheels on the car and keep being consistent at every racetrack."
"We have a good bike and team this year, and I think you're going to see a lot of us this year," said Smith, the 2007 world champ who is riding for Don Schumacher Racing this season. [All of the makes] are close. It's just how you ride, how good the tune-up is, and who makes the best lap in the best session, and we did that yesterday." Friday recap (SpeedZone Media) From the West Coast and the first two events to the first big road trip to the South East and the 40th annual Gatornationals in sunny Florida. With the first big road trip for the NHRA caravan the first thing noticed in the pits where the lack of nitro Floppers and one semi regular in Top Fuel. Gary Densham stated earlier this season he needed a sponsor or it would only be a couple West Coast races. David Baca is also skipping the jaunt East. The one race Tequila sponsorship for Densham obviously did not pay off on Asombrosa's web site enough for Densham to continue carrying that livery. Matt Hagan may also be a driver who is on the bubble as the DSR backer on that car, 'BrakeSafe' has not paid their bills to DSR. A couple Florida part timers, Mike Gunderson (Top Fuel) and Mike Smith (Funny Car are making their season debuts. Surprising, is the lack of performance for both Fuel Classes. The air was bad too bad (under 200 feet), but the floppers could not hit the 4.0's and the long skinny cars who stuck in the 3.90's. The track held a divisional event two weeks ago so rubber should not have been a problem. Of note, Robert Hight and the lead car for the John Force stable had a very uncharacteristic boomer on his opening shot, and is not in the top 12 after two session. A number of IHRA competitors are on hand in Top Fuel including Terry Haddock, Del Cox Jr., Bobby Lagana Jr., the "Greek" and Canadian Tim Boychuk. Mike Edwards is showing he is absolutely for real, as he leads Pro Stock with one of only two 6.50's on the Day. To no surprise Greg Anderson has the other. Pro Stock Motorcycle debuts this weekend as well and there are usual suspects are at the top as well as a couple not so usual. Matt Smith, Hector Arana (slight Surprise) Karen Stoffer, Andrew Hines and Angie McBride (a bit of a surprise) all ran 6's in the opening round. In the Top Alcohol classes, Bill Riechert's first event of the year produced the second 5.20 from the A/Fuel cars. He went 5.299/270 to lead the field of 21 cars. Seven of the top eight are of the injected variety. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, only 12 cars made laps Friday and to the big shcock was Frank Manzo leading the field (not really). Manzo went 5.51 and early season tesing paid off for Mick Snyder as he went a career best 5.54/258 to sit #2. One more round for those two classes Saturday at noon and then first round later in the day. Official NHRA wrap-up (Courtesy NHRA Media)
John Force was number two in his Castrol GTX High-Mileage Ford Mustang with his run of 4.153 seconds at 288.52 mph. Force's teammate Mike Neff qualified number three in his John Force Racing Ford with a pass of 4.154 seconds at 300.93 mph, which was the top Funny Car speed of the day. Neff's crew chief John Medlen is still recoverying from a cardio ablation Procedure following the Phoenix race. Doctors recommended he continue to recuperate at home before returning to action, possibly by Houston. Ron Capps and Matt Hagan were the number four and five Funny Car qualifiers.
Matt Smith led Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying on his Don Schumacher Racing owned NitroFish Wear Suzuki with a pass of 6.945 seconds at 189.44 mph. Smith, making the switch to a Suzuki and the new team over the off-season, has just made nine passes on this bike. He last rode a Suzuki in 2005. Smith said, "We left three or four hundredths (of a second) on the table first run, so if the conditions are the same tomorrow we should run a .90 or .91. We left some on the table, rider and tuner. If both of us do a little bit better job tomorrow morning I think we might still be on the pole." Hector Arana, riding his Lucas Oil Buell, was the number two qualifier, running 6.957 seconds at 191.40 mph. Karen Stofer's 6.963 seconds at 190.43 mph, on the Geico Suzuki, was good for the number three position. Angie McBride and Andrew Hines round out the top five in qualifying. This is the first appearance for the Pro Stock Motorcycles this year in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Missing-in-action was former champion Angelle Sampey, for the first time since the 1997 season opener. Two other 2008 Top Ten Finishers, Chris Rivas and Chip Ellis, were also not in competition this weekend. Doug Horne made his NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle debut qualifying in the 14th position, while John Sach Jr. made his return to NHRA after a 14 year hiatus.
In Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series action, Top Alcohol Dragster champion Bill Reichert was number one qualifier after two rounds of qualifying with a 5.299 second pass at 270.92 mph. Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Frank Manzo led qualifying with a run of 5.512 seconds at 261.83 mph. Arnie Martel was the number one qualifier in Competition Eliminator in his F/AA 2007 Pontiac GTO with a 0.666 seconds under-the-index pass of 7.934 seconds. James Caro in SS/BM Dodge Stratus was the number one qualifier in Super Stock with a 1.301 second under-the-index pass of 8.349 seconds. Greg Rowe, in his K/SA 1989 Chevy Camaro, was the number one qualifier in Stock Eliminator and advanced to round two today as he got the competition bye.
