First round elims Sunday morning, Shawn Cowie vs Cody Perkins. Bill Jeffery photos

What a sequence! This race should have been over early, and it really was as Cody went red. (Shawn) did not know it, so he ran the car right through this huge wheel stand. He stayed with the car, luckily it was going straight. This win seemed to have sparked the team, as the car ran 5.30's the next three rounds and Shawn owas on his game at the starting line, culminating with a final round win over Brandon Johnson

Friday Qualifying

After the furor to start the year on how the A/Fuel cars would never get a high altitude track like Las Vegas figured out, it seems they have found the answers. After Friday's lone session (round two was delayed to Saturday due to a crash by Jay Payne) three A/fuel cars are well out in front of the pack. A 5.267 by Munroe Guest and a 5.28 by Brittany Force are well over a tenth ahead of the nearest BAD (Shawn Cowie with a 5.407) . With the new cooling rules in place for 2010, my guest is that the A/Fueler are going to 'Let Er Rip' for the remaining three events.

TAFC

Jay Payne had a day with his TAFC he would like to forget as, in the first pairing in the second session, he got loose at half track and hit the guard rail in his lane. The body came off the car and the fire bottles also broke free and shot down the track into his opponent's (Mike Drake) lane. Drake aborted his run early and no issues ensued. Payne on the other hand would be out of TAFC competition for the second time this year, as it is his second battle with the wall.

Photos of the crash courtesy Paul Grant. He was the only photog on the starting line in the final session.

International Conference Call nets first-round pairings in the Matco Tools Pro Mod Clash

LAS VEGAS (October 27, 2009) - On a conference call Tuesday evening that included participants from California to Florida to Canada and cities in between, the first-round pairings were set by random draw for the Matco Tools $35,000 Pro Mod Clash in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals.

Anxious to learn their fates, the drivers clamored to "get started" as series administrator Matthew Brammer hosted the call and drew the names from an NHRA ball-cap. Joe Baker was the first name called, followed by former world champion Jay Payne. Next, Raymond Commisso was drawn and paired with current points leader Burton Auxier.

Commisso said, "It figures. Match me against the guy who's number one. But that's ok, we'll take him on."

In the bottom half of the ladder, Danny Rowe was paired with Roger Burgess setting up what promises to be one of the best matches. The two drivers have shown incredible consistency all season long and are separated by only five points in their bids to become the next Pro Mod Challenge World Champion.

Rowe said, "Well, I'll have to get it out of the way early. This will be a great race."

The other two drivers, Tim Tindle - a former Clash winner - and Mike Castellana rounded out the ladder and set the field for each driver to take their shot at winning the $25,000 grand prize.

The weekend's racing schedule has been modified from what was originally posted on the NHRA website.

The first round of qualifying on Friday for all cars competing in the event is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., and the first round of the Matco Tools Clash is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., followed by the remaining cars in their second round of qualifying. Saturday's schedule begins with the semifinals of the clash scheduled at 11:00 a.m. followed by the final qualifying session for the remaining cars. The finals of the Clash will be contested at 1:15 p.m. following the third qualifying round of nitro Funny Car. Event eliminations will be run in their entirety on Sunday, November 1.
