Big O'Tires Nationals

October 26-30 , 2011
Las Vegas, NV

A Sportsman gallery is here

Thursday Sportsman report

With today being reserved solely for Sportsman qualifying, that's where our focus will be for the most part. We will get into the pro and semi-pro pits from time to time, but getting all the sportsman photos today is our primary mission. As a side-note, we didn't take a look at the pre-entry lists beyond the Top Alcohol categories and were absolutely shocked to see nearly or in one case, more than 100 racers entered in each of the four sportsman categories. Super Stock features 92 entrants, Stock has the largest contingent with 102 cars, Super Comp falls just shy of the century mark at 99 and Super Gas is right on the money with an even 100, for a grand total of 393 cars in the four eliminators.

Coupled with the 157 cars and bikes entered in the pro and semi-pro eliminators, there's a grand total of 550 race entries. Despite the lousy economy and the high cost of traveling, there's still lots of folks interested in attending a national event in Las Vegas at the end of October. The obvious attractions of Sin City, almost always great weather, especially compared to the imminent onset of winter in many locales, and the fact it's almost the end of the racing season and a last chance for many competitors to get their race fix before parking their hot rods until next year.

After yesterday's very windy and rather cool conditions on set-up day, the weather has taken a turn for the better, with only a light breeze and temperatures forecast to be in the mid 70's. Over the weekend the predictions are for those numbers to climb into the low 80's with mostly sunny skies. At the moment (noon) there's only a few light wispy clouds in the sky and most of the people who were bundled up this morning have shed their heavier clothes.

Super Comp

We've already seen two rounds of Stock and Super Stock qualifying, one round of Super Gas and now we're into the first session of Super Comp. So why am I up here in the media centre working on a report when I could be out at the starting line watching 50 pairs of semi-fast dragsters launch, stutter, coast, then fly down the track to big speeds and medium slow (8.90) e.t.'s. The answer is obvious and it's for all the reasons outlined in the previous sentence. While the cars are uniformly beautifully painted and detailed, and feature excellent equipment, the entertainment or excitement factor is seriously lacking. Yes, some of them are capable of 180 or more mph on the big end, but when they're throttle-stopped within an inch of their lives, the interest wanes before they pass the 60' beams.

Super Gas

Super Gas is similarly unwatchable, but even slower with it's 9.90 index and the cars, while just as nice to look at as the Super Comps, are just as boring to watch, or in the case of most spectators and myself, NOT watch. Sorry folks, but that's just the way it is and as long as these eliminators are controlled by timers and solenoids and delay boxes and throttle stops and other gizmos, it's just never going to get better. Perfection in reaction and elapsed times seems to be the goal and the idea of
going fast or actually having fun seems completely lost in the equation. Yes, I realize it is index racing, but the concept just isn't working anymore. And that's assuming that it ever really did.

Super Stock

Let's move on to something that still has some interest and after a number of years of declining participation and stagnation, Super Stock has experienced a bit of a revival recently with the addition of an increasing number of late-model factory hot rods. After decades of non-interest by Detroit, two of the automakers, Dodge with their various Challenger models and Ford with their Mustangs are creating a bit of a renaissance for what was starting to look like a dying eliminator. Even the addition
of the Modified Eliminator refugee classes many years ago, Super Stock just seemed to be going nowhere.

There's still lots of cars from the golden age of muscle cars (mid 60's to early 70's) but now they're being joined by some serious numbers of late-model cars. There are still problems in Super Stock with a proliferation of converted front-wheel drive cars from the 90's and 00's and while in many cases they weren't attractive cars when they were new, they are much less so now. Short, lumpy and with no real identities, these cars have nowhere else to race but really don't come near the original vision of the category. Unless there's a radical reworking of the sportsman section of the sport, there's really nothing that can be done with them other than to live with them.

Stock

Stock eliminator doesn't have as much of an identity problem and the vast majority of cars are real muscle, or semi-muscular (small-blocks instead of big-blocks and hemis) hot rods from the 1960's and 1970's, with not that many mediocre grocery-getter type vehicles from the utilitarian designs of the 80's and 90's. And just like their bigger brothers in Super Stock, the late-model factory cars are making serious inroads in the eliminator. The only question left to ask is when is GM going to join the party?
After all, they do have a pretty powerful Camaro, an insanely powerful supercharged Cadillac and some other worthy candidates for the Stocker wars.

Stock Round two.
