WINNERS CROWNED AT JEGS CAJUN SPORTSNATIONALS
BELLE ROSE, La. Hundreds of racers in nine categories were narrowed to nine champions late Saturday night at the JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at No Problem Raceway Park. Slate Cummings of Ponchatoula, La., was victorious in the Moser Sportsman Shootout in the final round contested Sunday morning.
Cummings worked his way through the unique sixteen car Moser Shootout field, where racers from seven entirely different class structures battled it out. Cummings powered his 00 Stock Corvette to the $5,000 payday over Jeff Lopez, Bedford, Texas, in his Super Comp entry. Lopez was hoping to double up on his Super Comp event title from the night prior when he defeated John Labbous, White House, Tenn., with a winning pass of 8.908 seconds at 158.06 mph. This marks his 2nd National event victory, both here at the JEGS Cajuns.
Kevin Helms, Schriever, La., is off to a hot start this season picking up back to back wins in Stock Eliminator. He grabbed his 23rd National event Wally trophy with a final round pass of 9.363 mph at 126.38 mph in his 10 Challenger to defeat Chuck Downing, Britton, Mich. Helms also visited the winners circle last week at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville to add to his divisional win there in late February.
The Super Stock title went to Anthony Bertozzi of Ashland, Va., securing his fourth career JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals victory. In a final round battle of Northeast racers, Joe Santangelo, Marlborough, Conn., had a slight advantage off the line, but Bertozzi pieced together a .011 second package for his 18th National event win.
Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La., and Todd Ewing, Cullman, Ala., left even at the start with Raftery grabbing the finish line stripe in the divisions Sunset Performance Top Sportsman final. The winning pass of 6.585 seconds, 213.37 mph gave Raftery his fourth National event win. The KPE Top Dragster title went to Robert Mandell of Culleoka, Tenn., as he defeated Samuel Patrick, Plaquemine, La., 6.442, 202.73 over 6.616, 201.73 for his first National even win.
Tewksbury, Mass., resident Arnie Martel, drove his '15 Camaro to a 7.671 second, 167.01 mph lap to score the Comp win over Glen Treadwell, Sorrento, Fla. While it was Martels 15th National event win, Holden Laris from Raceland, La., was able to secure his first. Teddy Moses, Mandeville, La., went red in his '27 Ford handing the Super Gas trophy to the 18 year old Laris.
It was a battle of Texans named Ray in the Super Street final as Ray Dew of League City defeated Ray Todd of Friendswood. Dew picked up his 2nd JEGS Cajuns title running his 70 Nova 10.908 seconds at 138.88 mph in the 10.90 category.
In Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson, it was Dave Gautreaux of River Ridge, La., hoisting the trophy in the winners circle. He used a 9.036 second, 146.24 mph pass to defeat Randal Guitreaux, Prairieville, La., 10.067, 137.96.
