The West Coast Hemi Shootout!

Weather wins the weekend! Ogburn wins the Doe! Michael Ogburn (left) was the class of the field all weekend. He was the quickest Hemi car during every session. His 8.681/151 mph blast in the second round of eliminations held up as the quickest run of the weekend by 5/100ths over Dave Raybourn's career best 8.73/151 mph shot. Michael received the $2000.00 winners purse courtsey of California Financial Services and UBS Paine Webber, and the $1000.00 for the quickest et for the weekend (8.681) courtesy of Harry Holton Super Stock Hemis. The runner up and semi finalist split the winnings for those two rounds. Jerry Jenkins and Allyn Lee split the pot as well as the two top contingency prizes. Allyn Lee (lower left with Sonja Holton) picked the very nice Hemi Valve covers put up by Motorsport Product Design and Developement (MPD). Mike Laws and Dennis King will be proud to know that the covers will be on the Worlds quickest SS/A car and the World's fastest Hemi Super Stock period! Allyn's 153-154 mph blasts here at Mission both this year and last have ever been bested by anyone. Jerry Jenkin's won the other big contingency prize, a set of Roller Lifters courtesy of Mopac Auto Supply. Mopac also donated $500.00 in certificates, with $300.00 going to Dave Raybourn the second quickest car on the weekend, unfortunately for Dave he red lit in the second round, not giving the #2 qualifier the chance to race the #1 qualifier in the final round, which was highly anticipated. Jerry and Allyn received $100.00 in certificates from Mopac. Thanks go out to Catfish and John Duda for their support of the shoot-out. Jared Jordan was the winner of the $500.00 put up by Dick Panter for the best rt of the weekend's eliminations. Jared had a great .012 light in his first round win over Phil Mandella. Many thanks go out to Dick for his support of this event. To all the other sponsors of this event, Kerrisdale Speed Centre, Mike Booker Automotive, Muffler Tech Performance, Bad Example Racing, The Bellingham Lunch Bunch, (to John Rowan you are looking great!), and Rich Carlson Photography.

#3 6546 SS/A Allyn Lee, Red Deer AB, '68 Barracuda 8.834..... -1.116 vs. #8 6027 SS/AA Mike Booker, Davenport WA, '64 Savoy 9.042 ..... -0.958

#4 7301 SS/AA Jerry Jenkins, Modesto CA, '68 Barracuda 8.855..... -1.145 vs #7 6688 SS/AA Renald Grise, Red Deer AB, '68 Barrcuda 9.013 ..... -0.987

#5 7551 SS/BA Jared Jordan, Modesto CA, '65 Belvedere 9.162 10.20 -1.038 vs.
#6 700 SS/AA Phil Mandella, Upland CA, '68 Dart 8.989..... -1.011

Michael Ogburn ran a 8.82 in his single first round match-up. Dave Raybourn got the luck in the first round as Jim Isherwood tried to cut down the tree and red lit to give Dave the easy win which he needed as he got real loose after a huge wheelstand and had to lift. Allyn Lee defeated Mike Booker in a good race that saw both guys snooze at the tree but had enough power in the stick car to advance with a 8.95 to Mike's 9.11. The final matchup proved to be the best one that was won on the starting line when Jared "Jake" Jordan had a great .011 light in held off an 8.99 but slow .120 rt by Phil Mandella.

The second round saw Allyn Lee get the bye, Michael Ogburn take on "Jake", and Dave Raybourn battle with Jerry Jenkins. Lee ran an 8.80 to go to the semi finals. Ogburn ran an awesome 8.681 to defeat Jordan's very loose and slowing 14 second pass. The match-up with the most potential has Raybourn take on Jenkins. Dave had a half tenth on Jerry all weekend but he got rattled by Jerry's usual great rt's, and red lit away his best run of the weekend, a 8.73, to Jerry's close 8.78. The semi Finals gave Jenkins the bye into the final while Allyn Lee got to duke it out with the man in the 8.60's Michael Ogburn.

Hopefully the weather cooperates and we can finish this shootout tomorrow.

Friday May,2 2003. It was a very good day for qualifying for the Hemi shootout here at MRP.

Nine cars are here to compete in the Hemi Shoot-out presented by UBS Paine Webber/California Financial Services and Mopac Auto Supply. 7 "A" and "AA" cars , 1 BA and 1 EA car made laps in Fridays three qualifying sessions with one more first thing Saturday morning. Michael Ogburn (left) leads with a 8.73 under cool but surprising very low barometer readings. The reading were in the 29.8 readings al day long and that makes it about 30 point lower than hoped for. Dave Raybourn is second (below) with an 8.80 and Allyn Lee is #3 after driving the stick car to a 8.84. Jerry Jenkins goes 8.87 to sit in the four slot. Jared Jordan is number five after setting the BA record at 9.17. Mike Booker is slowly getting a handle on his new AA car and ran a 9.07 and Renald Grise ran 9.12 to sit seventh. Jim Isherwood is 8th right now after running 10.05 and Phil Mandella made the most exciting run in Raybourn's #2 car, when flames from the unburnt fuel shot out of the car on the launch and then he went into a huge wheelstand and came down hard enough to bang the oil pan and pop the drain plug on the pan putting a bunch of Oil down on his lane. The pan was fixed thanks to Steve Federlin and he will run in today's last session. Eliminations start at Noon for the Hemis and the final run will be the last two cars down the track tonight. Stay Tuned!

May 2, 2003

Today is day one the the West Coast Hemi Shootout Qualifying, After the Test N Tune Thursday, four cars made it clear they would be at the top of the heap come eliminations Saturday afternoon. Michael Ogburn and Dave Barton had the two quickest ets for the day as they both ran 8.80's in the heat Thursday afternoon. Jerry Jenkins and Allyn Lee were right behind at 8.93 and 8.91 respectively. Mike Booker was sorting out his new car and made a soft 9.20 lap and Phil Mandella drove Raybourn's Cuda to an easy 9.20 as well. Did not see if Renald Grise made a pass, and Jared Jordon (Jake as he is called by Grandpa Harry Holton) ran a very good 9.24 in his first hit in the big BA car. Did not get his second pass numbers. So qualifying will go today first thing with 4 rounds today and one more in the morning to decide the ladder for Saturday afternoon's eliminations . If all goes well the final two cars in the shootout will go as the last two cars down the track Saturday night.
