A record setting intimate affair for the first NW Good Guys event.

Around 200 cars were in attendance for the first Pacific Raceways Good Guys race. Not the big numbers are seen in California, but what was lacking in quantity, it more than made up for in quality. Record setting performance is a number of categories highlighted the event.

Funny Car, AA/GS, A/Fuel and Jr. fuel "B" all saw new records set throughout the weekend. Dan Horan ran 6.012 and 6.021 to reset the national record. Dennis Lachartie ran 241.71 and backed it up with a 239.95 to set the speed record as well. In Top Fuel no record was set, but Brett Harris after missing the last event, ran 7 straight 5 second laps to thrash the field including defeating Rick McGee in the final. Father Jack had his own excitement, when a blow by tube came off his ride (the John Blanchard TF car) igniting the fuel and oil on the headers big time in the lights. No real engine damage on what like a catastrophic explosion. Harris ran 6.02, the best run ever with the Blanchard car.

AA/GS also saw record breaking performances every day of the event Sean Renteria and Chris Abby ran side by side 6.60's on Friday and the hits continued culminating with a class shattering 6.562.210.90 mph by Chris Abby on Sunday in the semi finals. Unfortunately for Abby he could not continue his torrid pace in the final and Ed Moss took the victory with a 6.727 win for a tire rattling 6.949 by Abby.

A/Fuel was a battle of a couple injected nitro diggers and team mates. Claude Lavoie originally from Edmonton now out of Pasadena, ran 6.228 in the final qualifying session and ran 225.86 in the semi finals for the mph record. Teammate Kin Bates won the event, over Lavoie, who got in on the break rule after Bill Wayne defeated Lavoie 6.283 - 6.275 (holeshot win). The final was a classic side by side race with Bates just edging around Lavoie in the lights 0.026 6.266 224.88 - 0.019 6.278 226.51.

Jr. Fuel "A" saw point leader Scott Parks fail to fire in the final round against rival Dean Carter, giving Carter the easy win. He did run a great 6.98, and was the only 6 second driver in the class on the weekend.

Jr Fuel "B" also saw record setting performances. John Rasmussen set both ends of the national record (7.163 185.79) and hand a single in the final round when Fred Notzka broke on the burnout.

---------Kent Washington---------

Duane Grosart AA/GS Weekend wrap up.

Once again the crew from Shoebox Racing was on the road last weekend. This time headed for Kent, Washington the inaugural Goodguys Northwest Nostalgia Nationals. This would be the first opportunity to run against the best in the class.

The first qualifier was to go at noon on Friday so the team arrived Thuesday evening and by the time of the staging lane call on Friday all was ready to go.

The car was set up with a safe tune up in order to get a base line of performance in the "horspeower" air down in Washington. The track conditions were very sticky and the weather was perfect. With a somewhat soft launch and an easy run the Shoebox ran 7.128 @ 202.91 mph. That was plenty fast enough to qualify but way off the mark from the leaders.

For Saturday the tune up was made a lot more aggressive as the number 1 qualifier ran 6.646 @ 208.81. After a minor starting line glitch Duane piloted the car to a 7.935 @ 192.06. Due to the problems at the starting line the numbers shown did not accurately reflect the run. The pass was very hard and straight but unfortunately the agressive tune up took its toll on a couple of pistons. Upon tear down afterwards it was discovered that there was damage to some pistons and with no spares the team's weekend was finished.

Congratulations to Ed Moss for capturing the win in the final against Chris Abbey.

The Shoebox crew returned home dissapointed but hopeful that they have what it takes to run with the pack. A little bit of repair and some consideration on what spare parts to obtain and they will be back at it in Bakersfield California from September 30 to October 2 for the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion.
