Little did Calvin Wrench and Terry MacKay realize when a mutual friend introduced them at North Van
High that in a short couple of years they would be racing a 500 HP HEMI. In 1965 this opportunity
presented itself when they spotted an ad in the latest HOT ROD Magazine which stated that Chrysler Corp
would offer in their B Body cars a street version of their race winning HEMI.

The decision was made to
purchase a pair of these powerful muscle cars from Johnston Motors salesman and future competitor John
Bowden. After a summer of early evening bench racing at Kings Drive In followed by testing at “Westview”,
“The Church ” and other proving grounds they decided to get serious about racing and formed the team of
“Wrench and MacKay with a planned debut at the new Mission drag strip in 1967. Both would be out of
school, working and able to devote more time to the project. To accomplish this meant selling Calvin’s car
and transforming Terry’s into a legal NHRA Super stocker racer. The car was stripped of weight and then
(pioneer) Jack Williams bulletproofed the HEMI. With sponsor Ridgemont Chrysler on board Mr. Kite was
ready! Calvin tuned, Terry drove and with the support of their trusty 392 HEMI powered tow (and back
up racer) ‘56 Plymouth station wagon the team headed off to do battle with the best in the Pacific Northwest.
Over the next 3 seasons the team claimed numerous class wins and set the MPH record at Madras Oregon.

With a dramatic redesign announced for the 1970 Barracuda the team knew that to remain competitive
they would have to join the rush to acquire the new lower and lighter body style and that meant finding a
major sponsor. The solution was resolved when Pacific Chrysler stepped up and supplied the body and
future technical support. The ‘66’s drive train was then transferred into the Cuda and the Satellite was
sold to help finance the upcoming effort. Shortly after, the 2nd Mr. KITE hit the strip along with a very
competitive multitude of newly styled and backed factory racecars. For the next 2 seasons the team now
with a more convenient but crowded ramp truck continued its successful role as one of the Premium
Hemi SS racers. At the end of 1971 the main sponsor lost interest so for ‘72 Gassy Jack’s Saloon became
their sponsor. However in 1973 with the US fuel crisis in full swing and continuing escalating costs Terry
retired from racing and by the end of the season Calvin at the age of 22 joined his friend in racing retirement.
In a short 6 years this teenaged team had achieved wonders with 2 of the most iconic sought after and
envied Chrysler built HEMI dream cars to ever grace a drag strip. Thankfully, both of the cars still exist
as the un-restored Cuda resides at the Syndicate Scuderia Museum in Aldergrove, while its restorer,
Dave Strell, owns the Satellite. 2012 finds Calvin living in the interior and Terry residing on Vancouver
Island.
As to the identity of Mr. Kite, Cal and Terry state that he’s still around and still “topping the show”.

saturday Sept 22 at the Shannon hall Cloverdale fairgrounds. Start at noon,

The 2013 NHRA National event schedule is unveiled

INDIANAPOLIS --

With a new series sponsor and enthusiasm for continued growth in the sport, NHRA announced its 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule as part of a whirlwind of announcements and activities at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis on the eve of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Auto-Plus at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
The unveiling of a new series sponsor, the 2013 schedule, the final lottery drawing for spots in the NHRA Traxxas Shootout for Top Fuel and Funny Car, and a preview of the race as a handful of racers battle for the final spots in the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship, were all a part of the festivities on Wednesday, as the world's largest motorsports sanctioning body kicked off the biggest and most prestigious event in the world of drag racing.

Highlighting the 2013 schedule is the inaugural NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H., June 20-23. The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series' visit to the Northeast marks a process of more than a decade in the making and reaffirms NHRA's position as offering the most geographically diverse schedule of any major motorsports series in the country.

The summer months leading into the most prestigious and historic event on the tour, the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Labor Day weekend Aug. 28 - Sept. 2 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, will be a grueling challenge for the teams with nine races in 12 weeks, and will see the teams travel from coast to coast. That portion of the schedule kicks off the first weekend in June (May 30-June 2) with the Toyota NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, N.J. After a week off, the circuit embarks on four races in row, beginning with the Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. (June 14-16), the inaugural NHRA New England Nationals (June 20-23), the O'Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago (June 27-30) and concludes with the traditional July 4th celebration in Norwalk, Ohio, with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals (July 4 -7).

>From Norwalk, the series heads on to the famous Western Swing, which features three races in three weeks under three very different conditions: the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver (July 19-21); the NHRA Sonoma Nationals in Sonoma, Calif. (July 26-28); and the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals in Seattle (Aug. 2-4). After a week off, the demanding summer stretch concludes in Brainerd, Minn., with the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals (Aug. 15-18).

The 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series begins, as it has for 53 years, with the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Calif.), Feb. 14-17, and continues the following week in Phoenix with the NHRA Arizona Nationals (Feb. 22-24). The traditional East Coast opener will be held March 14-17 at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville (Fla.) with the 44th running of the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals.

The fourth stop in the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (April 5-7), followed by the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C. (April 19-21). The series continues with the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Houston (April 26-28), Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta (May 3-5), and the NHRA Kansas Nationals in Topeka, Kan. (May 17-19).

The six-race 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, NHRA's playoffs, kicks off in the fall with four consecutive weeks of racing: the NHRA Nationals in Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 13-15); the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals in Dallas (Sept. 19-22); the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis (Sept. 27-29); and Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pa. (Oct. 3-6).

The season concludes out west with the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas (Oct. 24-27) and returns to where it all began for the season finale with the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals (Nov. 7-10).

The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will compete in a 16-race schedule, with six of those races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD, a part of the ESPN network, the worldwide leader in sports, will once again provide exclusive television coverage, on a same-day basis, of all NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events featuring action from qualifying rounds on Saturday and Sunday's race.

NHRA announced today that The Coca-Cola Company has extended its relationship with the world's largest motorsports sanctioning body and will continue its longstanding association as title sponsor of NHRA's premier series through the year 2018. In addition, it was announced that beginning in 2013, Mello Yello®, The Coca-Cola Company's popular citrus-flavored soft drink brand will be the new series title sponsor: The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

RAD Eliminator... the new Fast Bracket in the NW.

(Many race series' have come and gone in the NW, but a new series has serious backers and a core group of racers that will ensure long term success).
......It is modelled after the highly successful Top Eliminator class run at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton. It is a fast bracket class that includes Dragsters, Altereds and Doorcars. The success of Top Eliminator is due to a dedicated core group and really strong purses. This model for success has lead local racers to put together a similar class called 'RAD Eliminator'. The 'RAD' name comes from title sponsorship from RAD Torque Systems. Dan Provost, owner of 'RAD' is a hard core Top Dragster/Super Pro competitor and Justin Bond, another racer and owner of JBS Canada liked what the Alberta class offered and they put together this new 'fast bracket'. The rules for RAD Eliminator are pretty simple. 6.00-8.99, 5/10th's tree , full electronics and cross talk. Full rules and info are at www.radeliminator.com
The purses are a guaranteed minimum $2,000 to win and $1,000 for runner/up. The semi final losers will run off for $500.00. There is a points fund at the end of the season. A number of associate sponsors have committed to the series' including Mickey Thompson Tires, RH Race Cars, DDT Diesel Technology, M&M Race Cars and others. Entry fee is $100.00 per day (plus track user fee). There is a 1st round buy back ($50.00).
For all Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Pro, Super Comp and Super Gas racers, this is THE class for you. They offer a better purse than NHRA Open or Divisional competition, in a more layback attitude.
They have made up their inaugural schedule around the Divisionals, Open events and most other big dollar races in the NW making is easy for all fast bracket cars to attend the three double headers scheduled. This is a first for us and great news for any drag racer wanting to meet 'Big Daddy' as attending the Car Show will not interfere with most racers schedule.

SITKO TO RACE WITH ROCKY MOUNTAIN NOSTALGIA FUNNY CAR GROUP

Troy Sitko (29) will take over the reigns of the Team Ace Racing 1937 Chevrolet blown alcohol funny car for the 2012 race season. Team owner, Harold Parfett and the Sitko Family Racing team have extended their partnership to include both of the Team Ace Racing nostalgia funny cars. Nathan Sitko (26) will be the primary driver of the 1977 Plymouth Arrow nitro funny car.

The Ace team, based out of Bittern Lake, Alberta will once again be defending the Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Car title this season with their new driver. In 2011, Eddy Plaizier drove the popular funny car to the points championship, adding to a long list of credentials for the talented driver, including multiple International Blown Alcohol Association championships and multiple International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Rocky Mountain Nationals titles. The team has been racing together since 2004.

Co-owner of the Sitko Family Racing nostalgia nitro funny car team, Troy began driving in the new Junior Dragster class in 1993 at the age of 10 years old, where he won the first race he ever competed in. He drove in the class through 1998 and, at the age of 15, finished second in the class in the Edmonton track's points chase. Troy crewed on top alcohol dragsters and funny cars driven by Serge Dion and Nathan Sitko up until 2007 when he earned his license in Marty Sjogren's top alcohol dragster, which he drove to a 5.93 second best at 237 miles per hour. In 2011, Troy upgraded his license in the Sitko brothers' new nitro funny car and drove it at an event later in the year. He clocked a 6.07 second best at 224 miles per hour.

2012 will be Troy's first year with the Rocky Mountain Nostalgia Funny Car group. He will also continue to drive the nitro funny car at a couple of to-be-determined events in 2012. The team will be hitting a few local events, including the 2012 IHRA Mopar Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam Nationals (July 6th-8th at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton), as well as events in Las Vegas, Nevada and Mission, British Columbia. The team also hopes to compete at the 2012 California Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield, California with both funny cars.


 

Todd Hoerner goes to the extreme in 2012

After a few years away from full time racing to get settled on the East Coast, Todd Hoerner is pleased to be back on track. 2012 will see Todd back in a Pro Stock car. In 2008, Todd ran Pro Stock at selected events in the NHRA and competed admirably against the likes of the Summit Team, Jegs, the Johnsons and Mike Edwards. He qualified for all but three events he competed at. From there, Todd and his family relocated to the East coast to work for legendary engine builder Sonny Leonard. Todd and his family have settled into the East coast life style and he is ready to get back to serious racing. Todd has run in Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman a few times a year, but he decided to jump back in with both feet and get back into Pro Stock, "Extreme style".
For 2012 Todd will campaign in Extreme Pro Stock in the ADRL. He will run a brand new Jerry Bickel 2012 Chevy Camaro with an 825 cu in Sonny Leonard Hemi between the frame rails.
To say he is excited about getting back on track is an understatement.

" Since moving to the East Coast I have been waiting for the opportunity to race Pro Stock again, and the chance has come. Competing in Top Sportsman and Comp eliminator with big inch Sonny's power (he set the ET record , and MPH record for A/AA ) has allowed me to acclimate myself with big inch motors. Moving up to Mountain Motored Pro Stock is a dream for me. Sonny has a number of clients in the class, and I am looking forward to running with them in the ADRL.
The ADRL has become a great place for many to race at and it is THE place for Mountain motor Pro Stock racing. Sonny's is one of the leaders in big inch motors, and it is the right time for one of the most well known NW drivers (ex NW racer now) to compete at a high level. Todd is one of only two drivers to win Wally's in five different categories within the NHRA and he looks to make his mark here in the ADRL.
Todd hopes to be out for the first event of the year, the Dragpalozza VIII event in March at Houston's Royal Purple Raceway in Houston.
