Jirka Kaplan capped off his unreal weekend with a win over Maureen Jondahl in the Competition final Jirka was hit in the first round of eliminations with a .02 permanent and a .10 weekend cic hit in defeating Mark Stewart who went .60 under in the first round as well. Jirka breezed through eliminations with a .00 light against Stewart, a .01 light against Jim Warter and a shut off run in round three when Gary Anderson red lit. In the final both cars had a chance to get big hits if they ran real quick, but with .12 lower indexes already and Jirka having a 2/10th advantage in performance he was pretty safe. In the final, it was much closer than expected, as Maureen had a great .005 light and ran a 8.909 (.541 under). Jirka had a .039 light and went 7.293 (.577 under) to get the .002 win light. The margin of victory was only 5 inches.

Top Comp had a number of surprises, including a first round loss by Todd Hoerner, the #36 (went in as an alternate) qualifier Dave Jackson going to the final round and defeating Doug Hemenway. Jeff Devey went three rounds and stays in the #1 spot with 292 points. Hemenway moves up into the #2 spot with 282 points. #1 qualifier Tom Tucker was possibly on a 6.30 run in round one as he lifted way early and still went a 6.47 on a 6.60 dial in that ended his day early. SpeedZone's John Evans looked to be a late, late round finisher when he broke out by .012 on an apparent easy win over Scott Howell who idled down track on a .330 rt 9.72 (on a 7.71 dial). Of note, there does appear to be alot more high horsepower cars in the class, with half the field quicker than 7.50 and more and more blower cars coming out. A very good sign for the class. What I would like to see is more door cars out even yet, to give Mike Rice the justification to perhaps separate the field into a door car and dragster version which has been bantered about more and more frequently.

Super Stock was an "All Canadian" final round with local favorite Rick Johnson up against Alberta hitter Byron Setters. The Alberta driver took out Johnson for his first win of the season and moves into the top 8 in points. Points leader Jeff Lane was a no show this weekend, but those right behind him in the chase could not capitalize as Both Sean Cour #2, Steve Wann (not entered) and Terry Anderson #4 were out in round one.

Stock eliminator saw Steve Kelly in the I/SA El Camino parlay a great .005 rt into a win over Mike Sumner driving his F/SA Nova. The win should be enough to move Kelly into the top 10 in the point standings. Sumner also moves into the top 6 or 7. Brad Plourd took over the top spot with a fourth round finish that puts him at 396 points, twenty up on Jody Lang.

Super Comp winner was Anthony Castillo. He took out first time Super Comp finalist Adam Drzayich with a 51/1000ths package compared to Adam's 83/1000ths package. The win solidifies his first place lead in Super Comp. He now has 365 points. Dustin Hentges and Dick Vander Meer were both early round losers. Fourth place in the points Mike Drzayich, lost to brother Adam in round three. SpeedZone's Cory Thompson could not run the number in the third round as he was defeated by #1 Anthony Castillo in round three.

Super Gas had a first time winner this year in Mike Coltrin . His win was a valuable one as well, as he went from 17th place in the standings to first overall. The runner-up was Ken Mostowich from Calgary who jump into the top 15 with the runner-up. The only player that was in the top five who picked up any points was Anthony Castillo, who added 10 to his total with a second round loss. He now sits in third place with 291 points six back of second place local, Stefan Kondolay. Kondolay went out in round one, when his Camaro died on the starting line. It did the same thing Saturday afternoon in the last session of time trials. Bill kondolay spent the rest of Saturday trying to find the problem, but the car worked fine in the pits. As soon a a load was on the car at the starting line it popped and died. Hopefully the local team can chase down the bug in the car and get it right before Medford Oregon. To me it seemed like an electrical problem, but what do I know.

Saturday qualifying proved that Kaplan could repeat as they went event quicker with a 6.88 in the BB/AM in Competition Eliminator. This further put a knife into the field as if winning this event is really important to the Alberta team, no one can really touch them as having over 3/10ths on 99 percent of the field should be enough to give them the win. He just has to keep from doing anything stupid to the index or redlighting away a pretty good chance to win. Maureen Jondahl while not #1 was still very happy with their .802 under qualifying effort. In first round action Kaplan takes on Ray Hadford and Jondahl is up against Don Barton. In Final qualifying, 12 of the 16 qualifiers went .535 under or better. The other BB/A car, the gas version driven by Chuck Smithfield went .479 under.

JD Zink ran a career best 7.10 to sit .594 under

In Top Comp, Shawn Cowie's riegn as the #1 qualifier ended by 4/100ths as Tom Tucker took his new blown hemi dragster to a 6.57 lap at over 214 mph to edge Cowie's 6.61 @ 204 effort. The 32 car field saw a stout 7.80 bump that was only two cars away from a 6.6 or quicker field. Nick Drzayich is #3 with his new Grand AM at a 6.99.

Drzayich went 6.99Wes Garvin had awesome light in three of four laps and ran 7.30's in TOp Comp.

Terry Sherrill headlined a strong field in Super Stock as he went under the national record in SS/AM with a 8.29. Sean Cour is #2 with a 9.95. Two SS/HA cars got unfactored sub 10 second time slips. Here is the top 16 in the 33 car field

Jirka Kaplan goes 6.93 (1.035 under) in BB/AM. Jondahl goes .802 under to sit #2 at Mission Raceway's Lucas Oil event. This is easily the run of the weekend so far, and possibly the farthest under ever in modern Comp Eliminator. Jirka's comment when I told him that there were rumors of three or four guys on the West Coast planning on building a BB/AM car, (I bet those guys are pissed). His quote was "come out and play". A total of 12 cars ran better than .500 under. The corrected air was okay but certainly not fantastic (around 300-1000 ft. throughout the day).

In Top Comp was headed by Tom Tucker driving a rear engined blown Hemi. He went a great 6.57 at 214 mph. That is possibly the quickest Top Comp Dragster pass ever. I believe Rod Clough went 6.40's or 30's in the BCAA Funny Car a few years back.

Super Stock had only one highlight for me, and that was seeing Terry Sherrill run 8.49 in his new SS/AM Cavalier. No "AA" hemi cars showed up as they are all on their way to Indy I guess.

AUGUST 16, 2003 CALGARY CANADIAN OPEN Top Alcohol Top qualifiers

John Evanchuk of Edmonton was the quickest qualifier in the Funny Car
class for tomorrow¹s Canadian Nationals drag race. Evanchuk's ORed Wolf
Pontiac Firebird ran a time of 6.206 seconds at 228.36 mph. Second-quickest
qualifier was Ken Kraus of Great Falls, MT in the "Renegade" Pontiac.
Calgarian Roger Bateman was the third-quickest qualifier but hurt the team's

August 3, 2003 Final results are in from North Central Motorsport Park.

Here is the short report courtesy of Nancy Wilkenson:

It was an excellent weekend - The weather was perfect and our base of Top Comp and Super Pro competitors increased from last year. Our main contingent of competitors in all classes except Sportsman came from Alberta and the Lower Mainland. We even had a few from Washington State and the Island. The Junior also made an excellent showing this weekend. Overall we had 118 competitors including Junior Dragsters. Our draw from areas west of here was only four racers due to it being Terrace's 50th Anniversary and River Boat Days.

Points standings will be tabulated this week.

July 30, 2003 Canadian National Open Final at Prince George this weekend. Here are the points heading into the final event in the Canadian National Open standings. Courtesy Div6.com and Mike Rice

Top Comp will prove interesting as none of the players in the championship are expected to make the trip to Prince George. If any do, they will have to overcome Mike Seekins total of 219 points to surpass the Super Comp champion. Those with a shot are Kim Brynn (198), Paul Nowak (167), Dale Green (166), Mark Campbell (159), and Marvin Mueller (154). Two other racers with a very long shot (meaning the above racers don't show) would be Dave Barcelon and Mike Weiss, who would have to win the event.

In Super Pro, Damian Giddens is in the proverbial driver's seat heading into this weekend's event. Damian has amassed 217 points, but Jim Behnke and John Korfiatis (both with 184 points) are easily within striking distance of the title. Others still in the hunt are Steve Carlson, Ron MacKenzie, Peter Berditsch, Lonnie Sharkey, Bill Edgeworth, Jordan Hancock, Vicki Strell, Scott Lemen, Dave Jung, and Andy Scheu.

Pro has even more drivers in contention. Kevin Martyn has a scant 11-point lead over Darrin Eby and John Korfiatis. Others in contention are Ray Bollinger, Sherry Barnett, Mike Montoney, Doug O'Conner, Martin Rachel, Brad Plourd, Chris Young, Billy Hart, Larry Sailly, Otto Schulte, Ken Mathes, and Randy Winkler.

Sportsman has become a two man race with Phillip Marvetz having a big advantage heading into the final event. Second place Kim Stacy would have to win and hope that Marvetz doesn't show to earn enough for the title.

The Snow/Bike class has come down to three riders battling it out. Miles Hauer holds a 21-point lead over second place Al Omond. Stewart Kienas is back another 23 points from Omond, but still in contention.

Jr. Lightning racers with a shot are Cody Scheu (242 points), Darren Barton (234), Chad Bratt, Aaron Giroux, and Casey Plaizier (all with 188).

Jr. Thunder has come down to Tanis Brown (222 points), Brandon Rachel (211), Melissa Scheu (157), and Nikki Cannon (146).
