NHRA schedules SPORTSnationals
for 2004 Lucas Oil Series season
NHRA officials have announced that a national event exclusively showcasing
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series sportsman competition will be held
in 2004. The NHRA SPORTSnationals will be contested April 23-25 at
No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., one of the marquee quarter-mile
tracks in NHRA's Division 4.
The NHRA SPORTSnationals will feature a guaranteed purse of more
than $50,000 and competition in six NHRA Lucas Oil Series categories,
including Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp,
Super Gas and Super Street. NHRA Lucas Oil Series national event points
will be awarded to drivers in all categories except Super Street.
"We are thrilled to announce the addition of the NHRA SPORTSnationals
to the 2004 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule," said
Tom Compton, president, NHRA. "The SPORTSnationals is an event
that sportsman racers have wanted for some time and we feel that with
the support of the sportsman racing community, we can build it into
one of the most anticipated events for sportsman racers each year."
The three-day event also will feature class eliminations in both
Stock and Super Stock, as well as a Hemi Shootout. In addition, several
NHRA professional teams are scheduled to participate in exhibition
races on Saturday evening. As an added convenience, participants may
pre-enter or register on-site.
"Today's announcement reaffirms NHRA's commitment to continue
to provide unique competition opportunities for our sportsman participants,"
said Len Imbrogno, director of sportsman racing and member tracks,
NHRA. "In the future we will continue to work with our member
tracks and sponsors to develop challenging racing events to highlight
our sportsman racing programs, the grassroots foundation of NHRA."
NHRA hosted the SPORTSnationals from 1974-1986 at a trio of tracks,
including Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. (1974-'80;
1985-'86), the old Houston International Raceway (1981-'82) and Indianapolis
Raceway Park (1982-'83).
Note to the locals; ie: Mission Raceway executives. Why not lobby
for one of these events. Including a Hemi shootout in the mix. It
is perfect for this facility. Wally and Rick, are you guys paying
attention?

Pomona Sportsman Results
Comp eliminator, was a Division 7
show down between the new 2003 world champ Dean Carter in his A/Nostalgia
Dragster and Vinnie Deceglie driving the cool pro mod type corvette
in A/A. Both guys took similar cic hits through eliminations, but
Vinnie had a psychic .004 light and ran his best lap of the weekend,
a 6.63 to collect his first National win of the year. Carter had a
great final three events of the year including two wins at Vegas and
a runner-up here. Here is the final round results.
(W) Vinnie Deceglie A/A 7.09 0.004 6.633 -0.457

Super Stock has two heavy weight sportsman
drivers facing each other with Gary Stinnett, the 2003 Super Comp
runner-up taking on Bo ButnerIII. Stinnett got some revenge for losing
the Super Comp title to Jack Beckman on Saturday with a victory over
Butner.

final.

Las Vegas Motor SpeedWay.
The final frontier. Okay the final race for competitors across North
America to collect Divisional points in their quest for a divisional
title. Here are the qualifying efforts for the four sportsman classes.
The Super classes are here.
Thanks to Drag Race Central for all the stats.
4:25 pm The experience of Dan Fletcher
was too much for Brad Plourd but it was a very close final round in
Stock. Fletcher had a great .005 light
to an equally good .011 by Plourd, but Brad took to much stripe breaking
out by .02 allowing Fletcher to get his second Divisional win in Stock
this season. Good job guys, and congrat's to Brad for his 2003 Division
6 Stock title. In Super Stock, Peter
Biondo gets his fifth Divisional win of the year putting an exclamation
on his dominance in the class for 2003. Stan Leercamp defeats Wes
Garvin in the all Division 6 Top Comp
final round. He has a perfect light in the final to Wes's close .019
light. A good job by the division six racers.
4:15 pm The Comp
final and 2003 NHRA championship in the class is decided at the starting
line as Santo Volpe rolls the beams, red light and breaks giving the
easy win and title to California's Dean Carter. Carter takes a 9 second
stroll to savoir his 2003 Comp title. Congrat's to Dean and the Carter
family.
3:55 pm Hicks and Biondo
will face off in the Super Stock final round.
3:40 pm Brad Plourd goes against hitter
Dan Fletcher in the Stock final. Fletcher has have been better than
.06 on the tree all day and Plourd has been better than .04 all day
long. This Should be good. This is probably the 2003 Division 6 Stock
champion's toughest test.
3:20 pm Two Division
six guys make the final in Top Comp As Wes Garvin and Stan Leercamp
will battle it out. Garvin's worst light has been a .016, so he is
very sharp today. In Stock Brad Plourd faces off against Scott Hilton
in one semi and Ken Passerby and Dan Fletcher are in the other. In
Super Stock, Youngblood lost to Dan Fletcher, ending Division 6's
run in that class. Jeff Hefler, Peter Biondo and Kevin Nicks are left
in Super Stock.
3:00 pm The Dream Final
in Comp is here. Volpe vs Carter for all the marbles. Not to be a
sceptic in the semi finals but, Wilmoth .3 rd light against a fellow
division 7 competitor was pretty bad. I can see a .1 or less red light
but to go more than 3/10th red , I don't know. As far as the other
semi final. Self did run .6 under in qualifying and was 3/10ths slower
that that in the round against Volpe. In every other round of eliminations,
his competitors red lit so he did not have to run quick, so you can
only speculate that his truck did not have the power in the semis.
I would have to give
the edge to Carter in the final, as he has not been hit hard index
wise where Volpe has had .23 taken away. Carter should be able to
track down Santo if he does not brain fade at the tree.
2:30 pm Rob Youngblood
is the last guy from Div 6 in Super Stock and goes to the 1/4 finals.
2:20 pm In Stock, they
are down to the final eight and Brad Plourd Division six team mate
Steve Glenn face off. They are the only two left form division six.
2:05 pm In Comp, two guys with a chance
to win the world title are in the semis in opposite side of the ladder.
Dean Carter takes on Steve Wilmoth and Santo Volpe is against Brian
Self. They both have to go to the final. If Santo gets to the final,
and loses or wins against Wilmoth (which means Carter lost in the
semis), Santo wins the Comp title. Carter has to win the race in order
for him to win the championship. The hope is that the two make the
final round and it is all on the line.
1:45pm. Devey loses in round three in
Top Comp. Doug Hemenway wins
the championship. Wes Garvin and Stan Leercamp go to the semis.
1:00 pm Rob Youngblood and Mark Faul
are on to round 4 in Super Stock.
11:30 am Garvin, Leercamp, Devey and
Jeff Snell are still in the hunt in Top Comp as they go to round three.
11:00 am. Both Kaplan and Meyers went
out in round two. Kaplan red lit as he took on Dave Ebbert in his
A/D. Meyers has Volpe and is was a close one at the stripe with Volpe
taking it by .05.
Sunday Nov. 2, 2003 10:00am
Super
Stock has three competitors left from the "Land of the
Leaders". Terry Sherrill, Rob Youngblood and Mark Faul. Stock
has Brad Plourd taking on Division 6 compatriot Dave Chun Jr, Don
Little is still in as is Steve Glenn. Round three has 32 competitors.
In Comp, Dennis Meyers and Jirka Kaplan
are in the final 16. Meyers takes on Santo Volpe and Kaplan has David
Ebbert. In Top Comp, Wes Garvin advanced
to round two, Doug Hemenway was upset in round one and now Jeff devey
who won in round one has to win the event to take the championship.
Stan Leercamp and Scott Howell are going to round two as well.
Kirka Kaplan rocks the Comp world
again with a 1.005 under 7.005 in his BB/AM. #2 qualifier is a distant
.24 back Santo Volpe with a 8.014 in his A/SR.

Holton in, I'm guessing one of Ogburn's cars, even though it list

Sept. 21, 2003. Medford Oregon.
It looks like Abbotsford's Stefan Kondolay has a good chance to win
the division title in Super Gas, as he
went four rounds at the final Division 6 event here at Medford Oregon.
With the fourth round finish, he picks up 21 points and sits with
318 points. Mike Coltrin now sits with 315 points but would have to
travel to Vegas in hopes of catching Stefan. He would have to go three
rounds two retake the point lead. In the final, Johnny Gross battled
the defending champion Kevin Riley, and got the win for Division 6
when Riley red lit. He moves up around ten spots in the standings,
into the top 8, with the win. In Stock
eliminator, Brad Plourd has wrapped up the championship as he picked
up another 22 with his 4th round finish. He sits with 416 points.
Jody Lang and Mike Lewis who sat 2nd and 3rd did not up and more points
and are out of races. The final round saw Joe Sorenson in the 9.97
(lap at Woodburn last weekend) Camaro take on the "Hitman"
Bill Kost. It was a classic .001 win by Bill Kost as the Hitman and
Sorenson both breakout out by .01, but Kost took the stripe. Sorenson
moves into 5th place in the standings and Kost moves up ten spots
into 7th place. In Super Comp, Anthony
Castillo has wrapped up the division and went to the final round against
very good friend Adam Drzayich. 'Tony' took the close win over Adam
by .23/1000ths, giving him three divisional wins for the year. His
divisional point total is 424, and a chance to challenge for the National
title as he now sits win 606 points. He trails Gary Stinnett by 32
as Gary has 638. Stinnett has one divisional event left to claim heading
into this weekend, and Anthony has three nationals yet where he can
improve. Go buddy! His first event is next weekend at Chicago. Adam
moved into a third place. Dustin Hentges is second with 306 points.
Adam has 296 (all point totals are unofficial).
In Super Stock, Jeff Lane solidified
his top spot in the class, as he went to his second final round. This
time he took on Al Falcone, and Falcone red lit away his chance for
his first win in a long time. The win by Lane gives him 373 points
and an almost insurmountable lead. He also has pretty well wrapped
up 2nd place in the national standings as well. Peter Biondo has an
unattainable lead at the top of the standings. In
Super Street, Jeff Jackson went to the final round against
Division 7 hitter Vince Porter, won, and moved into second place in
the standings with 307 points. He moved up from 10th place in the
standings. Dj Januzzi leads by 10. Comp
Eliminator had a couple fast Div.7 cars facing off, with Vinnie Deceglie
in his A/A Corvette up against Joe Mozeris driving his Dodge powered
B/ED. Mozeris got the win with his popular "Vette running a 6.69
in the final round. In Top Comp, Scott
Howell advanced to the final round with his 7 second Beretta, to take
on two time 2003 R/U Doug Hemenway. Hemenway got the win with a great
.005 light. The win puts him on top in the standings as he sits with
343 points. Howell moves into 4th place in the standings. In Kerker
Motorcycle, Mark Kosler keeps up his winning ways, after taking
the Bike honors at the team competition portion of the Summit ET race
at the 'Plex two weeks ago. He defeated Dan Partridge in the final
round. Patridge moved into a 3nd place with Dave LeBlanc. Jeff Havens
is in second place.
