Feb. 28, 2004 Sunday Final round
results. Comp eliminator. Dean Carter
is living a charmed drag racing life as he goes all the way to the
final round and wins with his A/ND that is not the strongest car,
but the competitors fell by
the
wayside with red lights. In five rounds of competition, only the second
was a straight up race for Carter where he defeated Tom Huggins by
.002. The rest of the way he left second and watched his competitors
fall to big red lights giving him uncontested wins to the final which
also included a win over Brett Brown. His only had to run .500 under
once. Well, when you are the world champ, guys gun for you and this
weekend they pulled their trigger a little premature. A good start
to his title defense.
In
Super Stock, Canadian Abe Loewen
drove a great race all the way to the final round, where he faced
hitter Al Corda . Loewen took out Joe Kohorst, Brad Rounds and division
6 young gun Brad Plourd in the semis Sunday, before reaching the final
round. Cunningham took out. Corda defeated Don Bevers, single and
Jack Bystrom before the final round. In the final Loewen got a free
ride when Corda red lit by .009. Congratulations to the Canadian prairie
Super Stock hitter.
In
Stock, Division six hitter Toby
Lang got his 9 national event win in his relatively short career,
when he defeated Bernie Cunningham in the final. Cunningham had a
bye into the final round and defeated Bill Kost in the 1/4 finals
In the 1/4's Lang had a bye run and he took out Mike Loge in the semis
before reaching his 16th final round. Cunningham was in his 11 final
but could not wait long enough as he red lit his chance. There seemed
to be a common theme in the four sportsman classes as all four were
either won by red lights or break out. New season jitters I guess.
Next weekend they are off to Phoenix for the CSK Nationals. With NHRA
looking after the prep the track should be alot better than during
the testing there three weeks ago.
Sunday Morning, Feb. 28, 2004, Part
two of Pomona's Winternationals begins with Comp Eliminator and North
West cars left in the field. Maureen Jondahl is the only driver left
in the class from Div. 6 and she gets to take on world champion Dean
Carter in round three. The other matchup's are: Doug Lambeck vs David
Ebbert, Tom Mettler vs Brett Brown and Brian Morrison and Michael
Stone. In Super Stock Harry Holton
lowered his #1 spot to a quicker 8.660. In eliminations all the hemis
were out by the end of round two, and
only
Brad Plourd was left from Div 6. Mantoba's Abe Loewen was also going
to round 3. Big names left in Super Stock, include Frank Grossi and
Jimmy DeFrank. (Left Rick Braun had his day end early when he put
his SS car on its lid just before half track). In Stock
Eliminator, Bill Kost, Jody Lang and Toby Lang are still in the hunt
from Div 6 and other name players include Bernie Cunningham and Mike
Loge. The Super Class(s), actually only Super Gas this weekend is
here
