With the extra day of time trials that ran on Thursday, Most sportsman classes got up to six time trial runs, far exceeding last year's Open. Even with the rain hampering Saturday qualifying drivers got their moneys worth. AA/GS cars two Jet dragster and the Top Alcohol shoot-out highlighted Sunday racing. The rain on Saturday kept the exhibition cars in their trailers until Sunday. Close to 11,000 spectators were on hand to watch the action over the four Days. Bucky Austin highlighted the weekend when he ripped off a 5.530/257 that was the quickest and fastest run ever by a TAFC in North West racing history. His nephew Pat held the previous record lap of 5.57. Bucky went to the final round in the shoot-out against Brian Hough who turned in a solid 5.61 on his first lap. In the final Bucky had to pedal his car and still turned in a 5.644/258 to take the win. Hough was loose and clicked it early. Clint Thompson turned in a great 5.57 on his second lap in his brand new 06 Monte Carlo with Miner Bros. Fontana power. In TAD, Brandon Johnson defeated Mark Hentges in the final with a great 5.38 to 5.46. Hentges was low in round one with a 5.40. Seven dragster and seven Funny Cars were on hand to entertain the record National open crowd. The rest of the final round results (Rich Carlson photos)

Sept. 5, 2005 Photo Gallery is here (Courtesy Todd Young) Medicine Hat's Canadian National Open (Courtesy Gerald Beatch) The biggest race in the history of Medicine Hat dragracing
was this weekend, the NHRA Canadian National Open. This was the first
time Medicine Hat has hosted a National Open, and it was a big success!
Racer and spectator counts were the biggest we have seen to date.
Unofficial racer count was at over 300 race vehicles. Stock/Super
stock had the biggest field yet this year for a Division 6 race, 35
cars. Not only did we see racers from all the Provinces and States
of NHRA division 6, there were also racers here from as far away as
Utah, and Manitoba. Westcotts latest victory comes just three months after the Parma, Mich., based engine builder scored a similar title at the second annual Jegs.com NHRA Cajun Nationals in Belle Rose, La. Westcott broke an engine in the final round, but collected the trophy and the $5,000 bonus after Steve Baughman of York, Pa., red-lighted in his 68 Barracuda. I saw the red-light right away so I knew I had won, said Westcott. My car was on a pretty good run and then I felt it lay over at half track. It didnt take long for me to figure out that the engine was hurt. Im pretty sure we spun a bearing so I guess Im pretty lucky that Steve red-lighted. Westcott was the low qualifier in the 12-car field with an 8.76 and had the quickest run in the opening round of eliminations with an 8.80 against David Barton. He was able to shut off early in the second round after Bob Wolkwitz fouled in his 68 Dart. Westcott had a bye run in the semifinals, but slowed to a 9.12 after his car spun the tires on the starting line. We fought the track a little this weekend, he said. I think Ive only made three good passes since Thursday. Since I had a bye run in the in semifinals, I decided to crank up the starting line rpm, but the track wouldnt hold it so we went back to a more conservative tune-up for the final. Baughman had an eventful day as he upset favored Jim Pancake in round one and then used a starting line holeshot to take out Fred Henson in round two, 8.98 to a quicker 8.93. Baughman then made his way to the final with a victory over Super Stock veteran Dean Mink. The Columbus event was the last major tune-up event for SS/AA drivers before the annual Mopar Performance SS/AA Hemi Challenge at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indy. That event, which is expected to attract upwards of 30 entries, will pay a $10,000 bonus to the champion. Comp final qualifying 1) Allyn Armstrong, Kingston, N.S., '72 Opel GT, L/A, 9.030 seconds,
