Mission Raceway Park. The first ever two night event (Friday night and Saturday night) for the Job Rite Street Legal series was scheduled for this past weekend at MRP. It turned out to be the first rain out of sorts for the Friday night racers. Only a couple cars made it down the track before the rain set in ending Friday's action. Saturday night they ran almost the entire evening under very cool conditions, but only a very short weather delay. The CPSA was also on hand to qualify for Sunday Eliminations at Mission. Only around 20 CPSa cars were on hand to qualify, and they included cars in the new !2.50 class, the 10.50 class Heavy Street, Real Street, and one or two Super Street cars. I did not see any Pro Streets on Sunday during their first round of eliminations. Regulars such as Glen Braid, Brian Lane, Ron Crookshank, Roy Moznick Rash Dhaliwal and Dal Sangha are still putting their finishing touches on their new or re-vamped cars. More details on many of them when they are available. Of Note: we will be doing a couple major profiles of the two Mustangs (Miguel's and Rod's) that were at the Collector Car Show in April in an upcoming issue of SpeedZone as well as a feature on Glen Braid's new ride very soon. Confessions of an ex-illegal street racer:

19-year-old Lin now only races at The Strip

LAS VEGAS -- Juddi Lin, 19, is an ex-illegal street racer. The CCSN automotive tech student used to tear up the streets of Clark County until she got torn up -- twice -- herself.

"I've been through six cars in the past five years," Lin admitted. "Two out of the six were (demolished) in street-racing accidents. Both of them were a total loss. The first one, I was street-racing a Mustang on a rainy day and I broke my collarbone. On the second one, I was at the illegal street races and I wasn't wearing my seatbelt and my forehead hit the (windshield) and my chin hit the steering wheel. They sent me to the trauma unit. It was an unhappy picture."

These days, Juddi's competitive urges are focused solely on Titan Auto Insurance Midnight Mayhems at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"I no longer race on the street," Lin continued. "I only race at The Strip. My parents don't want me street racing. But when I tell them I'm going to the (drag strip), they say, 'Okay, that's fine, you can go.' They would rather have me race at The Strip than on the street. I do still attend the illegal street (racing) meetings, just to meet with my friends. After that, I'll just leave and go home.

"It was exciting for a few years. I used to attend the illegal street races every Saturday for two years -- I never missed a Saturday. They used to call me the 'Illegals Queen.' After I got into the accidents, I started coming to The Strip. It's better than racing at the illegal street races. No car accidents, no cops and it's a good atmosphere."

After checking out the street scene on LVDR.net, Lin pays $10 to enter Midnight Mayhem and safely drag races against her peers until 2 a.m. on select Friday nights.

"I've been coming to Midnight Mayhem since it started. It’s a great atmosphere -- there's music, you see your old friends here and you get to race on the track all night long without a problem. No cops chasin' after you or anything. Right now I have an '89 Honda CRX that's my racecar and I also have a '93 Acura Integra that's my daily driver. I also have a 300 ZX that's actually my 'just-in-case' car."

The Strip at LVMS launched the Midnight Mayhem series last year and the street-legal drags program became an instant hit. The program was so popular it caused race officials to expand the schedule twice. Titan Auto Insurance is the official sponsor for the 2003 edition of Midnight Mayhem. Each event includes street-style racing from 10 p.m.-2 a.m., a nightclub DJ and a car show. Spectators pay only $5, and the racer entry fee has been held to an affordable $10. LVMS' program is so successful that the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) recently produced a how-to kit for track operators, based on The Strip's Midnight Mayhem guidelines.

"We'll never completely stop illegal street racing in the Las Vegas area," said Chris Blair, LVMS' director of drag racing operations, "but Midnight Mayhem helps. Each car drag-racing out here at The Strip is one less car participating at illegal street-racing events in the city."

The 2003 Titan Auto Insurance Midnight Mayhem series continues this Friday night at 10 p.m. Midnight Mayhem is open to any street-legal car or bike. The Job Rite Friday Street Legal program got under way last night at Mission Raceway. Based on the weather forecast, there should not have been any cars under the lights, but 125+ showed up for the first Friday night event of the year, including around 30 5.0 litre Mustangs a number of Camaros and Corvettes. As well, a dozen or so cars in Outlaw street make a number of laps under cool but dry conditions. This year there are plans for three Saturday night events to go along with close to 20 Friday night events. There has been as many as 300 cars for the grudge races, and in excess of 2000 spectators, watching their buddies take on each other in controlled safe conditions. Come on out, and see what all the hype is about.

March 24, 2003 "Mean Machine Super Show" at the "Strip" at LVMS.

Ed Thornton from Chino Hills dominated with his twin turbo charged Camaro in the Pro Street class at the "Mean Machine Madness" doorslammer event at "The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He ran a 6.82 at 210.73 in the single final, and drove it back to the starting line. He also had low et and top speed for the weekend with a 6.80 at 211. 36.

Extreeme Street saw Dave Bouman in his 63 Nova defeat John Wilson 8.22 at169 mph ,to a slowing 10.85.

In Outlaw Street, Greg Orr made the trek from snow bound Pueblo, Co., pay off, as he defeated Doug Sikara from Barstow, Ca. in a close matchup, 7.77 at 186mph to a losing 7.78 at 177 mph.

True Street winner was George Raygoza of Orland, Ca over Len Acosta from Whittier, Ca., 8.82/156 to a slowing 9.46/116

Real Street had Guiseppe Gentile from Las Vegas defeat Matt Schmidt from Parris Ca., 8.05/175 to a 8.55/136

Heavy Street winner was Joe Barrt form Colorado Springs over Roger Rydell form Lancaster Ca 8.18/170 to a slowing 13.28

And in Wild Street, Casey Vantol from Orland blasted Dave Eggerling form Barthoud Co., 9.61/147 to a 10.65/148
